S18 E1Called Home

CCormack

Hey, there was another hooker rip-off two weeks ago at the McGarrick on 12th. It's almost enough to make a man swear off infidelity.

[grinning] You losin' your nerve, Cormack?

CCormack

I did say "almost".

S18 E2Darkness

JBJudge Bradley

Just because the power is out doesn't mean we unplug the Constitution.

S18 E3Misbegotten

[after learning a doctor was investigating a genetic marker for homosexuality] I hear Pandora's box creaking open.

That's one area where science has been no help - how to keep decent people from making lousy decisions.

S18 E4Bottomless

Piece of cake. We just look for a black guy and a white guy together in New York City.

Well, there's us.

S18 E5Driven

Jonas, both children were killed by the same gun, by the same man. Someone from the neighborhood. But no one's talking to my people.

JDJonas Durning

Self-preservation. In case you haven't noticed, the neighborhood's turning white and rich. Families are being forced out.

My officers can't afford to live in the city anymore.

JDJonas Durning

That's your community, Anita. My community's just trying to hold on to its own.

Well, if "don't snitch" is how you define your community, maybe it's not worth saving.

My summation's ready. I can win this.

Famous last words. I've even said them myself from time to time.

This was a playground dispute between teenage boys over a $30 ball. We expect teenage boys to be impulsive and irresponsible. But teenage boys didn't turn this dispute into a tragedy. Their parents did. Gretchen Steel, who bullied her boys into going back to get their ball, who in defiance of common sense carpooled them to a street fight with baseball bats. Ray Manning, who, on impulse, ran out of his house with a loaded gun, who without warning, without thinking and with callous disregard, fired into a public street. Any reasonable adult would have kept their kids at home. Any reasonable adult would have found a way short of lethal force to get his son out of harm's way. You may think that this white woman and black man have nothing in common. But they share blood, the blood on their hands. Now you've watched them point the finger at each other, shirk responsibility, acting like children. No more, ladies and gentlemen. Make them take responsibility.

JJJudge John Laramie

[after the verdicts are delivered] I understand the jury has a statement they'd like to read.

FForeman

Yes, Your Honor. We, the jury, think this terrible event never would have occurred without both defendants causing it. And we recommend they should get the exact same sentence.

[to Van Buren, sotto voce] Justice.

Who would have thought it?

S18 E6Political Animal

VVargas

I used to think law was exciting, but politics, campaigning... it's like holding the beating heart of America in your hand.

[Green and Lupo stare]

VVargas

[Grins sheepishly] That must sound pretty terrible.

Victor said something about more of the tape. But there was no more on the tape. Did you stop recording?

CCarver

Primary's on Tuesday. Don't forget to vote.
