Yellowstone, established by an act signed by Ulysses S. Grant was the nation's first national park - March 1, 1872.
[stands] It's getting late, sir. I was wondering, are we through for the evening?
[smiling] Well, we're through with work, Josh, but this part's fun.
The part where I get you to sit down, and teach you a little something.
Perhaps, if you get into bed and...
I'm a national park buff. I bet you didn't know that about me.
Well, I didn't know that about you, sir, but I'm certainly not surprised.
You're... quite a nerd, Mr. President.
I assume that was said with all due respect.
Is it nerd-like to know that Everglades National Park is the largest remaining subtropical wilderness in the continental United States, and has extensive mangrove forests?
Just a little bit. Yes, sir.
There are 54 national parks in the country, Josh.
Please tell me you haven't been to all of them.
I have been to all of them. I should show you my slide collection.
[counting on his fingers] Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Badlands, Capitol Reef, Acadia, which is so often overlooked...
You should certainly feel free to keep talking, but I need to go home so I could be back in my office in... four hours.
See, the thing is, I can't leave without your permission.
Petrified Forest, North Cascades, Joshua Tree, Shenandoah National Park, right here in Virginia! [bangs hand on couch] We should organize a staff field-trip to Shenandoah. I could even act as the guide. What do you think?
[Under his breath] Good a place as any to dump your body.
...Did I say that out loud?
See, and I was gonna let you go home.
[Sinking feeling] ...But instead?
We're gonna talk about Yosemite.
In 1787, there was a sizable block of delegates who were initially opposed to the Bill of Rights. This is what a member of the Georgia delegation had to say by way of opposition; 'If we list a set of rights, some fools in the future are going to claim that people are entitled only to those rights enumerated and no others.' So the Framers knew–
HHarrison
Were you just calling me a fool, Mr. Seaborn?
I wasn't calling you a fool, sir. The brand new state of Georgia was.
Josh said you like goldfish.
[laughing] The crackers, Danny, the cheese things that you have at a party.
Oh... Ah... You know what, I'm not a hundred percent sure I was supposed to know that.
Well, fine, now I got a goldfish.
[still laughing] Give it to me.
You think I can't take care of a goldfish?
Her name's Gail, by the way.
No, the guy in the store.
[more laughing] Come here. [Gives Danny a kiss on the cheek] Thanks for the fish.
Would it surprise you to know that for the last few months you have been on a short list of candidates for the bench?
Well then this is gonna knock your socks off. Tomorrow evening at 5 o'clock, I am naming you as my nominee to be the next Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. You were not the first choice, but you are the last one, and the right one. Will you accept the nomination?
He said one in three White House staffers are on drugs?
Where does he get these stats?
I mean where does he pull them from?
Out of the clear blue sky, but that doesn't matter!
[to Margaret] Is someone bringing me a tape on this?
This isn't happening to me.
Nothing's happened, stay cool.
[walks in] Is it possible for Peter Lillianfield to be a bigger jackass? You think if he tried hard, there's room for him to be a slightly bigger horse's ass than he's being right now?
At some point you hit your head on the ceiling, don't you?
I think there's unexplored potential.
Five White House staffers in the room. I would like to say to the 1.6 of you who are stoned right now that it's time to share.
Apparently, I've arranged for an honor guard for somebody.
No no. Just tell me, is there anything else I've arranged for? We're still in NATO right?
A homeless man died last night; a Korean War veteran, who was wearing a coat that I gave to the Goodwill. It had my card in it.
Toby, you're not responsible for ...
An hour and twenty minutes for the ambulance to get there. A Lance Corporal, United States Marine Corps, Second of the Seventh. The guy got better treatment at Panmunjom.
Toby, if we start pulling strings like this, you don't think every homeless veteran would come out of the woodworks?
LLaurie
I can't believe you. What, did you get this out of a book?
LLaurie
Oh! What are you, the brains of the outfit?
Yeah, I am. And I got to tell you, I could care less about your indignation right now. A man has left himself open to the kind of attack from which men in my business do not recover. Now if our tactics seem less than civilized it's because so are our attackers. In any event, I don't feel like standing here taking a civics lesson from a hooker.
What's your secret service code name?
Flamingo is a nice looking bird.
The flamingo is a ridiculous looking bird.
You're not ridiculous looking.
I know I'm not ridiculous looking.
Any way for me to get out of this conversation?
I'm gonna go talk to someone.
This place looks great doesn't it?
I've never seen a Christmas look like this, the trees, and the lights, and everybody singing.
I brought it up because, I don't know, you seem a little down this week.
Yeah, I know Charlie. I tend to get a little down during the holidays.
You don't like Christmas?
I never knew you had kids.
Twins. Andrew and Simon. I tried not, you know, I dressed them differently, but they still did everything together. They went off to medical school together, and then they finished their second year at the same time, and of course their lottery number came up at the same time.
Well, I would have thought they could get a deferment to finish med school.
They didn't want one. Their father and I begged them, but they wanted to go where people needed doctors. Their father and I begged them, but you can't tell kids anything. So they joined up as medics and four months later they were pinned down during a fight in Da Nang and were killed by enemy fire. That was Christmas Eve 1970. [beat] You know, they were so young, Charlie, they were your age. It's hard when that happens so far away, you know because, with the noises and the shooting, they had to be so scared. It's hard not to think that right then they needed their mother... Anyway, I miss my boys.
