[V.O.] It was the end of summer, the week before school started. I had no intention of staying clean. And Jules had just moved to town.
Fezco
[to Rue about Jules] There's some new girl in town that I think you gonna be friends with.
Fezco
Shit, I don’t know. She came in yesterday lookin' all Sailor Moon and shit. I'm thinkin' to myself, like, "Looks like somebody Rue would get along with."
[V.O.] Which was sort of like a dead-on observation for Fezco, who's not normally revolving in the same direction as planet Earth.
Fezco
So, how long you been back?
Fezco
And, like, how are you feelin'?
I mean, ever since I gave my life over to my lord and savior Jesus Christ, things have been, like, really good.
Fezco
Word? That's what's up.
Yeah, I'm fucking with you, Fez. It was a joke.
Fezco
[chuckling] Shit. Hey, I don't judge.
But low-key, is Ashtray in the back?
Fezco
You serious?
What, you think 'cause I went to rehab, I stayed clean?
Fezco
I mean, ain't that the point?
Yeah, well, the world's coming to an end, and I haven't even graduated high school yet.
[V.O.] I was out back talking to Fezco when Jules arrived.
Fezco
What the fuck, Rue?
What? What, what, what, what?
Fezco
Come on now, bruh. You owe me 120 bucks.
[Rue laughs and hands Fez her joint]
Fezco
Shit, you know I ain't trippin'. [pause; smokes the joint] Well, to be honest with you, your whole drug shit got me feelin' kinda uneasy.
Come on, don't go soft on me, Fez.
Fezco
No, I'm not. It's just that... I like you. And I missed you, bruh. Like, that shit at the beginning of summer had me scared as fuck.
Yeah, you and everybody else.
Fezco
I'm serious, Rue. I've seen a lot of people die. None like you. Now, I don't know what type of fucked-up shit you got goin' inside your head. And I don't know how to help, but I could tell you one thing: This drug shit, it's not the answer.
You know, I remember when I was eleven years old... It was a couple months after my dad got diagnosed, and we got the results back from the prognosis. And it was really good. It was like, 80/20. And we decided to celebrate, so... we, like, ordered a bunch of Chinese food. [chuckles] I remember that night, I was laying between my parents in bed, and... all of a sudden, I couldn't breathe. It was like there was no more air left in the world. And I was gasping, and I was panicking. And they called the ambulance, and they thought it was like... an allergic reaction or some shit. And then, when I got to the hospital, they gave me liquid Valium. Yeah. To calm me down. And when it hit me, I thought... "This is it. This is the feeling I have been searching for my entire life, for as long as I could remember." Because suddenly... [beat] the world went quiet. And I felt safe in my own head. Two years later, he was gone. Panic attacks stayed. And I found a way to live, so... Will it eventually kill me? Maybe. Fuck, maybe not. I don't know. You still gonna be my dealer, Fez?
Fezco
Shit. You a fuckin' trip, bruh. [Rue chuckles] I'm too high to be havin' this conversation right now.
Yeah, man. Me, too. Me fucking too.
[Fez hears his walkie talkie buzz while counting cash]
Fezco
Yo, who is it, man?
Fezco
Nah, bro. Tell her to come back later.
Fezco
Hold on, hold on. You can't be in here right now.
Fezco
Nah, nah.
I need some OCs and some socks.
Fezco
I can't help you right now. You gotta go.
[Rue ignores Fez and walks into his bedroom]
Fezco
Yo, for real, Rue. I ain't fuckin' playin' with you. [pause] Come on. You can't be in here.
Look, Fez. I'm fucking drenched, okay? And, uh... I'm out of drugs, so... don't be a dick.
Fezco
Oh, my God. That's not my fuckin' problem! You gotta get up outta my house right now before these motherfuckers come through. For real.
All I need is a couple OCs, and some xannies. That's all I need, and I can be gone.
Fezco
Yo, I'm tryin' to tell you, I don't got shit right now. Like... Come back in a few hours, I got you, whatever you need. But right now, you gotta get the fuck up outta my house.
I know you have something, Fez.
Fezco
I'm tellin' you I don't got shit for you, bruh! Come on! [Rue walks out of his bedroom] I need you out the house right now! My guy's about to come through, and I don't want you here when he gets here, you understand?
[sighs; lays on Fez's couch] Give me drugs.
Fezco
This is dead serious. Yo, Rue.
[Fez's phone starts vibrating. Rue looks up from the couch as Fez glares at her]
Fezco
[beat] I could fuckin' kill you right now. [to Ashtray on his walkie talkie] Yo, Ash, they're here.
[Fez grabs a couple cash bundles and pulls out a gun hidden between the couch cushions. He checks the magazine before loading and cocking the gun.]
Fezco
Look, I'm serious, Rue. Just stay right there, keep your mouth shut, and be cool. These dudes ain't fuckin' around.
[V.O.] Now, I'm not gonna lie... that's when I started to get a little scared. I mean, I'm all good with drugs until guns start coming out.
[Fez hears someone pounding on his door]
Fezco
Who is it?
Fezco
Fuck.
[He sees Rue when he opens the door]
Fezco
[sighs] Not today, Rue. Sorry.
Come on, man. Don't be a dick.
Fezco
Nah, I'm serious. You can't come in.
Look, man. All I need is just, like, a few OCs. That's all.
Fezco
Sorry, I can't help you.
Fez. Fez, I've had a really fucked-up day, alright? It's been a really, really fucked-up day, okay? So I need you to open the door for me, okay? Can you open the door? Please?
Fezco
[pause; shakes his head] I'm not gonna help you kill yourself, Rue. I'm sorry, but you can't be comin' over here no more. Just go home.
Don't... Fez! Don't close the... [Fez closes the door on her] Fuck! Fez, open the fucking door, please? I'm begging you just to open the door. [pause; Fez just stands still with his back to the door] Fez! You're full of shit, man! You know, you make your living off of selling drugs to teenagers. And now all of a sudden, you wanna have a fucking moral high ground? You're a fucking dropout drug dealer, you know that?! You're a fucking drug dealer with seven functioning fucking brain cells! [knocks angrily on the door] OPEN THE DOOR! Fuck you! Fuck you, Fez, okay? Are you doing this because you care about me?! If you gave a shit about me, you wouldn't have sold me the fucking drugs in the first place! But you did! You fucking did! So open the goddamn door! Open the door!
Fezco
I can't do it, Rue. I'm sorry.
Open the door! Open the door! [tearfully] Open the door. [holds back sob] You did this to me! You fucking... You did this to me, Fez. You fucking ruined my life! The least you could do is open the goddamn door and fix it! I'm fucking serious. I'm so fucking serious. If you don't open this door right now, I swear to God... I will hate you, till the day I fucking die!
Fezco
I'm sorry. [walks away from the door]
[screams] YOU FUCKING DID THIS TO ME! Open the fucking door! [bangs on the door repeatedly] Open the door, Fez! Come on, man! Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck!
Fezco
Hey, what's up, kid?
Hey, man. Uh, look, I owe you an apology.
Fezco
Nah, come on, now. We're good.
Bro. Man, I... I said some really fucked-up shit I didn't mean.
Fezco
Listen, Rue. You a drug addict. I don't take nothin' a drug addict says personally, 'cause I don't believe nothin' a drug addict say. I love you, I hate you. You the best, go fuck yourself. It's all the same shit, you know what I'm sayin'? Y'all just lookin' for an angle in.
Yeah, I know, but... As your friend, I need you to know that I'm sorry. And I love you.
Fezco
I love you, too, kid.
And thank you for not... selling me drugs.
Fezco
As your friend, I got you. You sober?
Fezco
And how's that?
You know, it's weird. I've been fucked up so long that it kind of feels like a new drug.
Fezco
I feel you.
The highs are high, but the... The lows are low.
Fezco
[to Rue] Yo, ain't that your homegirl right there?
[Rue sees Jules drunkenly stumble and fall into the pool]
Jules, what are you doing?
[starts reciting Romeo and Juliet] Although I joy in thee, I have no joy in this contract tonight.
What are you talking about? I don't know what that means.
It's too rash. Too unadvised. Too sudden. Too like the light in which thou doth cease to breathe.
Jules, you're drunk, okay? And you sound like an idiot. Can you please get out of the pool?
'Ere one can say "it lightens." Sweet, good night! This bud of love by summer's ripening breath may prove a beauteous flower when we next meet.
[V.O.] And maybe Ali was right about Jules. 'Cause this doesn't feel good. [to Jules] Stop, okay. Can you stop? Stop. Stop! S-Stop, Jules! [V.O.] I just wish she'd told me about last night.
[Fez sees Nate and Maddy park near his and Ashtray's convenience store. Nate gets out of his truck.]
Can you get me a mango La Croix? And those cherry rolling papers?
[Maddy shakes her head. Fez watches Nate walk around the store through his reflection on a security mirror]
Fezco
What's up, man?
Yo, can I get two of the rolling papers, too, bro?
Fezco
Yo, man. I don't know what's been goin' on with you, Rue, and Jules and shit... but you should know, I really do care about her.
...Aren't you, like, her drug dealer?
Fezco
Nah, man.
What, are you in a relationship?
Fezco
Nah, bruh. That's like my family.
Fezco
Look, man. All I'm sayin' is, leave her and her friends alone.
Fezco
Nah, I'm just tellin' you.
Fezco
We're not gonna be havin' this conversation.
[beat] Fezco, let's get this straight. You're, like, half a retard. You dropped out of school at 20, and now... you're a gangster. What are you, like, fucking Tony Montana? What's the plan, hmm? You gonna be living in a mansion, fucking pet tigers and shit? [chuckles and smiles] Go fuck yourself.
Fezco
Listen, bruh. All I'm sayin', you keep fuckin' with Rue and her friends, and I'mma kill you. [pause] It's gonna be $5.75, playboy.
Fezco
Yo, you Rue's friend, right?
Yeah, since preschool. Sorry, I don't know why I said that.
Fezco
Nah, you good. You met where you met. Yo, what was your name again?
Fezco
Lexi... I like that. That's a nice name.
Fezco
So did you, like, have a good Christmas, or are you Jewish or somethin'?
Yeah, well, my mom's Jewish, but she always says, "If the Christians can steal Christmas from the pagans, then the Jews can also."
Fezco
You say the Christians stole Christmas?
Well, in order to convert the Germanic pagans who, like, celebrated winter solstice and stuff, the Christians were like, "Fuck it. Let's just say Jesus was born this day, and you can hang tinsel and stuff."
Fezco
How you just go and change the man's birthday?
Well, in the same way King James was rewriting the Bible on one side of the castle, and had witches trying to turn his pee into gold on the other.
Fezco
Yo, how the fuck do you know all this?
I don't know, by reading.
Fezco
Do you, like, not believe in God? [Lexi shakes her head] Damn, Lexi... You fuckin' fearless.
Thanks. Do you believe in God?
Fezco
Hell yeah, I believe in God.
Like, there's a man sitting in the clouds... judging all of your actions and stuff?
Fezco
Hell yeah.
Can I ask you a personal question?
Fezco
What's up?
How do you justify dealing drugs, then?
Fezco
Well, I mean, my Uncle Carl got diabetes from eatin' too much McDonald's. You don't see nobody goin' after they ass.
Yeah, but if I were God, I don't know if I'd let McDonald's CEO in Heaven. I'd be like, "Fuck that guy."
Fezco
Yeah, that's a good point. I have to get back to you on that one.
Fezco
Hey, where'd you go? I was startin' to miss you.
Fezco
Why would I lie? You're, like, the coolest person in here. Yo, I gotta cut soon, but... I just wanna tell you that... talkin' to you was one of the best parts of my whole year.
Fezco
Why you always doin' that shit?
Fezco
I don't know, like, doubtin' yourself and shit.
Oh, I don't know. Do I do that?
Fezco
Mmm, kinda. Yo... Can I, like, get your phone number or somethin'?
Fezco
What's up, man? You havin' a good time?
Fezco
You make any New Year's resolutions?
Fezco
A few.
[smiles] The last time we talked, didn't you say you wanted to kill me?
Fezco
Yeah, well... It's a new year, playboy.
[After raising their cups in a toast, Fez smashes a liquor bottle over Nate's head and beats him viciously to the shock of the partygoers. McKay pulls Fez away from Nate as other guests try to break up the fight.]
VVirgil
Chill, chill, chill! Come on, guys, it's New Year! Come on!
[Fez walks away, leaving Lexi speechless. Rue and Jules are in shock as they watch Cassie, Maddy and McKay carry Nate out of the house.]
If I were a genius, I’d figure out a way to do drugs for free. What if I am a genius? I’m a fuckin’ genius, Fez.
...
Fezco
Is that so?
It is fuckin’ so because I came up with an amazing fuckin’ plan.
Fezco
And what would that be, Rue?
All right, so [clears throat] ...all you would have to do is front me, like, $5,000 worth of drugs, okay? And–
Fezco
Hell the fuck no.
Okay, well, before you say no, you kind of have to let me finish, right?
Fezco
Hell the fuck no.
Okay, why do you keep saying that?
Fezco
I did not like the way that the plan started.
Okay, well, you have to let me finish the fucking plan.
Fezco
No.
Fezco
Hell the fuck no, Rue.
Fuck it. I give up. Whatever. I’ll just take my fuckin’ business elsewhere. It’s your fuckin’ loss, man.
Fezco
Hell the fuck no.
I know you and your drug addict friend. That girl... who tried to extort my son.
Fezco
What?
Because of what I did to her friend.
Fezco
The fuck are you talkin' about, man?
Fezco
Who? Jule?
[sighs] Look, man. I didn't know she was 17.
Fezco
...You tellin' me you had sex with Jule?
Fezco
What the fuck, man?
Fezco
The fuck are we even talkin' about right now, bro?
FFaye
Jule... Jule, Jule.
Fezco
What disc?!
Fezco
Yo, you recorded that shit?!
Fezco
You didn't know that you were recording?
Fezco
Obviously, man! Yo, who the fuck even told you I gave a shit about this anyway?
Fezco
Your son? The one that's in love with Jule?
Fezco
That's not cute, man. What the fuck?
Fezco
What kinda weird-ass father-son shit is goin' on around here, bro?
...I'm extremely confused.
Fezco
You're confused? I'm fuckin' confused, bro!
[Suze hands Lexi a knife block out of concern for Cassie's well-being]
SSuze
Lex… Hon, take these in the back and hide them in the bushes.
You really think she’s gonna stab herself?
SSuze
Your sister’s very emotional. Yes.
SSuze
In the bushes, now! Go! Hurry!
[Lexi walks outside to their backyard and grabs some branches to hide the knives]
[V.O.] It was at some point while breaking branches off a tree in order to camouflage a bucket of kitchen knives in a bush… that Lexi started to have second thoughts about putting on her play.
Fezco
Well, you know what… what you should put in the play? That time I beat Nate’s ass at that party.
[laughing] No! Oh, God! [Fez chuckles] I don’t know. Cassie isn’t doing too well. I’m worried that… she’s gonna see the play, and then, she’s gonna… freak out.
Fezco
Yeah, I mean… Everybody gets their feelings hurt, you know?
Fezco
Some people… Some people need to get their feelings hurt sometimes.
Yeah… It’s, like, the first time in my life I’m doing something for myself.
Fezco
Shit. What exactly is… the idea behind the play?
I don’t know, it’s… it’s, like, about a group of girlfriends who sort of… grow up and grow apart.
Fezco
Damn, so it’s kinda like, Stand By Me vibes.
Yes, exactly! I love that movie. That’s… exactly it.
Fezco
Hell yeah. Come on now. I’ve watched that film, like, 50 times.
Fezco
That’s my shit, come on. In fact, my grandma has it on DVD, you know?
[V.O.] For the last few months, Lexi had been talking to Fezco every day.
Fezco
I still don't understand what the play is actually about though.
Fezco
Well, that's nice. Everybody's gonna love that.
Yeah, I–I mean, I hope so. I just... I keep second-guessing myself and getting anxious. Like, if people are gonna think that it's good or bad, or if it's gonna upset people or not.
Fezco
But why would anyone be upset by it?
Oh, you know, it's–it's based on real people.
Fezco
Yeah, you really strokin' the bee's nest with that one.
Fezco
I mean... if someone invited me to a play, and... they didn't even tell me I was a character in it? I'd definitely have some questions.
Fezco
Depends on the play.
Well, would you be upset by it?
Fezco
It depends on the play.
FFezci
And the intentions of the person who made the play.
Fezco
Then you ain't got nothin' to worry about.
But... what if they think my intentions aren't good when in reality they are good?
Fezco
Well, that's what I call a quandary.
Fezco
Uh... Wait, what was the question again?
Like, what happens if Cassie sees the play and thinks I’m being cruel, even though I’m not?
Fezco
Well, how about you just don’t invite her then?
Fezco
Even more mad than if she actually saw the play?
Do you ever think about the future?
Fezco
Yeah, all the time.
Fezco
Yeah.
Fezco
I mean, I don’t–I don’t got, like, a plan-plan, but I be thinkin' about livin' on a farm, you know?
I don’t really see you as a farmer.
Fezco
Yeah, fuck it. Get some horses, cows, pigs, chickens, goats. Have a little family. Like some Little House on the Prairie type shit, you know?
I don’t know if I know that show.
Fezco
You never heard of Little House on the Prairie?
Okay, this might sound kinda crazy, but my plan is to have, like, three kids at 30. Like, each one a year and a half apart. So from 30 to 58, I can focus on, you know, being a good mom and raising my kids, etcetera, etcetera. And then, drop the last one off at college at 58, which will give me, like, 32 years to focus on me and live my life and take my time with writing.
Fezco
I mean, you really got this shit all figured out, huh?
Yeah. [laughs] It’s kinda crazy, right?
Fezco
I mean… they got three kids in that show. There’s no need to forget your manners just because we’re hundreds of miles from civilized folk.
If you lived in a place like this, do you think you’d have a gun?
Fezco
Hell yeah, I’d own a gun.
Fezco
Nobody’s ever got shot at and thought to theyself, “Whoa! Thank goodness we didn’t have a gun to shoot back.” You know?
Yeah, but then what are the police for?
Fezco
Fucked if I know. Shit.
Wait, are you on Instagram or Twitter?
Fezco
Hell nah.
Fezco
Yeah.
Fezco
Well, why would I want anybody knowin’ what I’m thinkin’ or feelin’?
I don’t know. You can connect with people who have similar interests.
Fezco
Mmm... I just feel like people be sharin’ way too much on there.
Fezco
Yeah. They be ruinin’ the mystery, you know? Like, say if I like a girl. I wanna find out what she’s about on my own, you know? I don’t wanna Google the scraps. I wanna peel back the layers.
Yeah, but like, why would you wanna waste time getting to know someone… if you don’t have anything in common with them?
Fezco
I don’t know. That’s what I like about you the most, though. Like… we don’t really have nothin’ in common.
That’s not true. We both… have the same sense of humor, and… are empathic and curious. [laughing] And wanna have, like, kids.
Fezco
Those aren’t interests, you know. Those are real character traits. That’s the important shit that people don’t post online.
Yeah, I never thought about it that way.
Fezco
Well, aren't you glad that we became friends?
Fezco
Yeah, me too.
