CarverFrom a Romanian orphanage to an American divorce. I hope New York State will prove a better guardian for these children.
Well, from your lips to God's ear.
CarverHe killed her to drive his partner back into his arms? That's almost juvenile.
It's primitive. Panic is a primitive emotion. That's how he felt without his partner.
[Goren's cell phone rings. He opens it and looks at the message. He looks relieved.]
Seven pounds, eight ounces.
Carver[smiling] Excellent.
It's great. You-- You should call her. I'll handle the booking.
[Goren has gotten Margie to admit that Donnie was part of the bank holdups by showing he had poisonous pills in his pocket. Margie and Donnie are then taken away.]
[eating one of the pills] It's vitamin C.
CarverI watched you very carefully, detective, but I missed you slipping them into his pocket.
Maybe because you watched the wrong detective? [Goren and Eames leave Carver to ponder that.]
[after all the guilty parties have been arrested]
CarverAny bets which one the media will paint as the lesser evil?
There's no such animal.
CarverYou'd think two people with their credentials and education could raise a perfect child.
They thought they did. That's the problem.
[about Tagman] I hear he volunteered to be a guinea pig for an experiment on the criminal brain.
CarverThey should do tests on how one man can shed so many crocodile tears.
[Just then, Carver takes a phone call.]
Carver[subdued] Mr. Tagman was beaten to death by another inmate in Sing Sing this morning. He was in the laundry working when he was attacked.
I guess now everybody has what they want.
CarverCongratulations, you've managed to unite atheists and Christians in common cause against police harassment.
We do what we can.
CarverWhat you seem to be doing is playing musical suspects.
CarverSince I have no intention of asking Mr. Radcliff any questions about that document, I see no basis to turn it over to him.
That is the lamest argument I've heard in a month; if it's evidence he has a right examine it!
CarverHe gives new meaning to the phrase "Give till it hurts".
He gives because he hurts.
Judge Barton asked us to reevaluate her surveillance. We'd been monitoring Brownfeld's group. There were no further threats, no chatter. We... We took a calculated risk.
CarverYou need a new calculator.
Do you recognize it, Detective Eames?
Yes. It's a letter I wrote to my superior officer five years ago.
Please summarize the contents.
It's a request for a new partner, but I withdrew my request.
Please read the highlighted passage.
"Detective Goren's erratic and antisocial behavior, his volatile and bizarre interrogation techniques, lead me to have seroius doubts about his judgment and his mental stability--" I want to explain.
Thank you. No more questions.
CarverRedirect, your honor. Detective Eames, please explain why you withdrew your request.
I was used to working with more conventional detectives. Detective Goren's style is definitely unique and an acquired taste. Over time I came to see that his approach was based on a deep understanding of human behavior. I came to appreciate him as an ethical person, and an effective police officer.
CarverThank you. No further questions.
