(flashback)
You know, remember ages ago, you and I had a really big fight? And I told you, I said, "you're like coming up for fresh air. Like I was drowning, and you saved me." I still feel that way when I see you, what we have, our family. That's the feeling. It's you. It's always been you. And I want more. Of this, of us, of... I want to have more. Let's have more. I mean it.
Meredith
You're crazy.
Meredith
Another baby?
Meredith
Uh, seriously?
PPaul
Ma'am? I thought that if this was a good time, I might take a moment to explain how this all works.
Meredith
Where are the papers?
PPaul
Mrs. Shepherd, there's some things you need to know... some things we need to discuss. Difficult things.
Meredith
I'm a doctor. Dr. Grey. I'm a surgeon, just like my husband was. I know how this works. You've waited the requisite number of hours, and now you can officially declare him dead. Normally, you'd talk to me about organ donation. But by the looks of his chart, there's not much left that works to donate. So, the ICU needs a bed. Those must be the papers... the papers you want me to sign to decide what to do with my husband... Now that he's dead, but not really dead. Do we ship him off to a long-term-care facility and cross our fingers and hope for fairy tales and magic? Or do I pull the plug? And stop all curative intervention? Discontinue all routine monitoring, remove all the catheters, drains, and tubes, end any and all treatments that might provide comfort to the patient. Terminate all life-sustaining measures... and behave as any sane doctor would behave. Does that about cover it, doctor? Is that what you want to talk to me about... while I sit here with my sleeping children? You want to talk about killing my husband? Give me the papers.
Meredith
Give me the papers!
I'm so sorry. I know that that's useless to you right now. But I am. He saved all those people. And it was my job... to save him. And I failed. And now... He's gonna die... Because I was not a good enough doctor... to keep him alive.
Meredith
Yeah, you're right. You did fail. You weren't good enough. But do you know what tomorrow is? It's Friday. There's gonna be more patients who come in who need you to save them... someone's mother, someone's kid, someone's husband. They need you to save them because they can't save themselves. So learn from this, better yourself, and you will be better for next time.
Meredith
You will be.
Meredith
Because he was your one. Every patient you treat, you're going to see my husband's face and remember that he was the one that died on your watch. He will haunt you. The hard ones always do. And it only takes that one. But that one will make you work harder, and they make you better. Or they make you quit, and you don't get to waste what would have been the rest of my husband's life being a quitter. So get back inside because you're not saving any lives out here.
Meredith
Yeah, I know. I know.
Meredith
I'm sorry about leaving the patient there. I didn't want to leave him there, either. And I am sorry for not talking to you about the house.
You don't talk to me about a lot of things.
Meredith
And you're mad at me for going away, and I am sorry about that.
Meredith
I mean, I couldn't breathe. I couldn't exist. You know, I looked around at that house, and my kids, our kids... I couldn't breathe.
Meredith
I didn't call anyone. I needed time.
I am a neurosurgeon. I could have saved him. And you didn't call me.
Meredith
Amelia...
Who contacted you first? The police? The paramedics? How far away was the hospital? How long were you sitting there waiting for them to declare him brain-dead? How many hours later was it before I was even informed? How many chances did you have when you could have called me? Why didn't you call me?
Meredith
There wasn't anything you could've done. He was too far gone.
You don't know that. You don't know.
Meredith
Yes, I do.
What if I could've helped him? What if I had a chance? I pull off miracles for a living. I have proven that I can reverse the impossible. I should have been there. If I had seen him or treated him...
Meredith
It was too late. By the time they... It was too late.
How could you do it? How could you unplug him without letting me know? I didn't get to see him. I didn't get to tell him goodbye. I thought you would've at least given me the courtesy and the respect when my own brother was dying. I didn't get to tell him goodbye because of you.
My parents are getting a divorce. My mom called and told me today. She's been having an affair with the man that services their cars... For 11 years. He's been servicing their cars and my mom. And my dad found out about it years ago, and he was enraged, and he stuck with it for me, because I was... I was still in town. I was always around. You know, so they held it together for the kid. Classic. Except the kid's a grown woman. They wanted to preserve my... happy, idyllic... pathetic, crap-filled lie of a childhood!
Meredith
Why didn't you tell me?
I... Your husband died, and I am crying like a 7-year-old over mommy and daddy. I... I didn't grow up like you. I... I've never lost anyone. I never even had a cat die. I still have all my grandparents. There's no darkness in my life. Just, I've never had it. So I-I'm not gonna come talk to you about it.
Meredith
Well, you should always come talk to me... Because whatever it is, chances are, I've seen worse, and I am qualified to tell you how you'll survive. You should always come and talk to me.
Meredith
Derek would have loved this. He came from this big, noisy family. I want this to be my last memory of this house. That's what he wanted, to fill it with noise and people. Okay. We have to dance it out.
Meredith
Let's go.
(They go back into the house and dance.)
See, when Webber had this job, it was easier for him. And Hunt had it easier than I do. You know why?
Meredith
I don't.
Because they had me. I need a me, and I believe that you can be a me for me. I need you to be my me. That's what they don't know I'd like to appoint you chief of general surgery.
Meredith
Me?
Because you deserve it. Because you can take it. Because I leaned on you, and you held me up. You are the calm in the center of the chaos. You have been since I met you. And I need you.
I make terrible choices. I leave things behind and just let the bridges burn. I did it with Ethan. I did it with Dean. Oh, my God. I did it with my entire life. One day, I chose to learn a little bit about my birth mother. Cut to I live in her house with her daughter, and I work with the kind stranger who fathered me, and I left behind an entire life and family that no longer exists. My parents are divorced. My childhood home is sold. My mother is in Hawaii making soups now. I—I have no home. It's like I-I flew to this planet on an exploratory mission, and the earth blew up behind me and I can't go back. And now I'm here with you aliens. Except I'm the alien, and I'm all alone, and I have nothing, and no one wants me.
Meredith
You got us. We want you.
I can't have sex with you. (starts sobbing)
Meredith
No.
You're a cylon. This is "Galatica".
I really do like her. She makes me not the crazy sister.
Meredith
what do you think they're paying her?
Meredith
[to Alex, as she gets in his car] Good morning.
[to Maggie, as they're getting in the car] You said you were drunk. Can I at least ask if you used a condom?
Shut... up. [shuts car door]
Look, there is a jumbo box of condoms under the bathroom sink. I share. They are for everyone.
Meredith
Wait. That was you making all that noise last night? I thought that was Amelia. Well, you aren't shy. And you have a filthy mouth.
Okay, can we not talk about this? Please. I am begging you.
So, the intern was good in bed.
Meredith
Intern? What intern? Maggie, what intern?
Meredith
Alex doesn't care about this. Do you care, Alex?
Do I care about any of this conversation? No.
Did he visit Ladytown? Because I find if they don't go down to Ladytown the first time, there should be no next time.
Meredith
She's right about that.
No more talking! If either of you says another word, I will jump out of this car while it is moving. And Ladytown is just as bad as Ladyplace.
Meredith
Geez. So sensitive.
Just trying to be nice. Take an interest. God.
Hey, what time do you want me at your house tonight?
Meredith
Why are you coming to my house tonight?
You're having a dinner party.
Oh, the dinner party. No, that's not tonight.
No, that's weeks away. It's on the--
Meredith
Dinner party's on the 14th, Alex.
Today is the 14th. You people need adult supervision.
There was so much sex. Hot, hot sex. Everything hurts. My back, my hip, the top of my head. I feel like I'm 80. Oh, my god. He's an intern. Who does that? Who screws the interns? What kind of person does that?
Meredith
[laughs] The father of my children.
Oh, Meredith. Okay, I didn't mean you know I didn't mean I'm very sorry.
Meredith
It's fine. Just relax. You think you're the first person to have inappropriate work sex? We all do it all over the hospital.
You knew who she was all night, and you never bothered telling me? She killed Derek! You invite her in here. Y-you let me sit there and talk to her all I well, I hugged her! Why?! W-why would you do that to me?
Meredith
I did this to you?
You should've told me. You should have. I thought that you and I––
Meredith
(screaming) I did. nothing. to you. I lost my husband and the father of my children and you're falling apart? I don't get to do that because I have three kids, so, please, SHUT UP AND GET OUT OF MY ROOM!!
[entering the room] Meredith---
Meredith
What's wrong?
I thought you were stepping up, putting Blake on your service, but what I saw in that O.R wasn't teaching.
Meredith
She crapped out on a basic surgical principle.
Meredith
If she cracks under the pressure of an emergent surgery, she does not belong in this program.
Blake was at the top of her class at Dillard. Her references were impeccable. I checked them myself.
Meredith
You checked? So you knew where she was from? You checked her case record? Her losses? Did you know that she--
She was an excellent candidate. You were the only reason not to hire her.
Meredith
And you didn't find that reason enough? (walks away)
I didn't want Blake here. I fought it.
Meredith
Then why did you hire her?
Because I've been accused of coddling you, and I didn't want to do that. I didn't think you'd want me to. That was one reason. I didn't want you here, either. When you were accepted to this program, I didn't know how I was gonna look at you every day... and be reminded of the best and worst times of my life. And you walked in, the spitting image of your mother. Talented, smart... here-- Every day. And I decided that wasn't fair to you. I decided to put aside my personal feelings to--
Meredith
Rise above.
And I'm glad I did that. Every day.
Meredith
He would have said the same thing. Derek-- He probably would have even liked her.
