Bailey

Every intern wants to perform their first surgery. That's not your job. Do you know what your job is? To make your resident happy. Do I look happy? No! Why? Because my interns are whiny. You know what will make me look happy? Having the code team staffed, having the trauma pages answered, having the weekend labs delivered and having someone down in the pit doing the sutures. No one holds a scalpel until I'm so happy I'm Mary Freakin' Poppins.

Bailey

Look, these are preemies, people, they were supposed to spend another 8 weeks in the womb. Just like interns, they're not ready for the real world.

Bailey

I may be forty-seven months pregnant. I may be on bed rest. I may not be able to see my own feet. But I am Dr. Bailey. I hear everything. I know everything. I'm watching each and every one of you. And I will return.

Bailey

(while operating on Megan) Look at this. Everybody wants a life without pain. What does it get you? She needs to be on a poster somewhere to remind people pain's there for a reason.

Bailey

[voiceover] In the beginning, God created the Heaven and the earth, at least that's what they say. He created the birds of the air and the beasts of the fields, and he looked at his creation and he saw that it was good. And then God created man, and it's been downhill ever since. The story goes on to say that God created man in his own image, but there's not much proof of that. After all God made the sun and the moon and the stars, and all man makes is trouble. And when man finds himself in trouble, which is most of the time, he turns to something bigger than himself. To love or fate or religion to make sense of it all. But for a surgeon, the only thing that makes any kind of sense is medicine.

Bailey

[voiceover] As doctors, we know more about the human body now than at any point in our history. But the miracle of life itself; why people live and die, why they hurt or get hurt is still a mystery. We want to know the reason, the secret, the answer at the back of the book because the thought of our being all alone down here is just too much for us to bear. But at the end of the day, the fact that we show up for each other, in spite of our differences, no matter what we believe, is reason enough to keep believing.

Bailey

I had five interns. Four of you have been on this table. One of you has cancer, one of you died. You better not pull anything funny on me, Grey.

Bailey

[to Ben] I had a husband and a baby and I was a surgeon. I had it all. And then it all turned bad. So I got divorced. And then I got back on my feet. I found you. And then there was a shooting. So now I am finally back on my feet again and I have you again. I just don't want it to blow up.

Bailey

[to Meredith] You want to waste your talent playing with one little predictable organ for the rest of your life? Nah, I'd rather spend my days leaping from the liver to the pancreas to the stomach to the bowel, and any one could go wrong at anytime. There's nothing wrong with knowing one organ and knowing it well, just like there's nothing wrong with being fifth-chair viola in the back of the orchestra. But it's a hell of a lot more fun being the conductor.

Bailey

When you are sharing your life with a person, you talk to them, you think with them, you make decisions with them, you are loyal to them.

[Meredith finds out the interns nicknamed her "Medusa"]

Bailey

Hey, this is not a bad thing. You want to be the attending with the scary nickname. It keeps your residents in line. It strikes fear in their heart. Take it from "The Nazi". It's good to be feared.

Bailey

[on a plane] All I keep thinking is, we're gonna crash on some tropical island and get attacked by a polar bear.

Bailey

[voice over] Infections are like sleeping monsters. You can't see them, you can't feel them. But you must do everything in your power to contain them. Because when the monsters wake up, they're out of control.

Bailey

[voice over] All that time you spent convincing yourself the sleeping monster wasn't real, it was gathering strength. The infection was spreading. The monster's awake now and there's nothing you can do about it.

Miranda

Come on, don't you remember what it was like to be a resident and have all of this death around you be new, terrifying? Why do you think they care so much about this stupid streak? Death is scary. They just want to believe that there's somebody out there who can defy it.
