The wife's here, of the beating victim. She ID'd her husband, so she wanted to take-
Owen
What's his name? I wondered if you asked her her husband's name so that he would become a person to you. They're all people, Yang. This is not a game or a contest or a competition to see who gets surgeries and who doesn't. They're people and we get to save them. Now you're good. You're excellent and you can win all the contests. But if that's why you're doing this then you shouldn't be. Did you find out his name?
[closes the door and sits down in front of Owen] My dad died when I was nine. In a car accident, I was with him in the car. While we waited for the ambulance, I tried to keep his chest closed, so he wouldn't bleed so much. When he died, my hands felt his heart stop beating. That's why I do this. It's also why I win all the contests. The patient's name is Tom. [leaves]
She said a thing about babies. Like babies are a totally ordinary idea. She's not afraid, she's ready.
When are you gonna do it?
No kidding? Outstanding! How're you gonna do it?
I don't know. Just decided.
Owen
Morning.
Owen
Congratulations, that's a big step.
Thank you very much. [to Mark] You just gonna tell everybody now?
You need advice. Hunt, you ever proposed before?
Owen
Uh sorry I'm... not the guy to ask. When are you gonna do it?
[Meredith approaches]
Well more importantly how am I gonna do it?
:[sees Meredith, coughs] So, what do you use, like a twist drill for that?
[Webber leaves]
Well not if you don't want a partial, pridal hematoma!
[Derek, Mark and Owen do big fake laugh]
[confused] Hi... [walks away]
Nice work today? Seriously?
Owen
I'm sorry?
'Run to my truck.' You've got O'Malley clipping bleeders and you're telling me to run to your truck.
Owen
You know what my truck looks like. O'Malley doesn't. And that- that run you took, it saved a guy's life.
Yeah, well, all day... all day you were teaching O'Malley and you ignored me.
Owen
O'Malley wants to be a trauma surgeon. You've already declared cardio. I didn't do anything wrong today. I treated you like I would anyone else.
No, not like anyone else. 'Take care now.' What is that? What are you, like, you know, happy now? What- what are you? You know, just a "choke 'em and forget 'em" kinda guy? [Owen hands her a card] "Hey there now. Take care now. Nice work, Yang." What is this?
Owen
It's my shrink. My shrink gave me these sentences. We, uh, we came up with them together. They're all 3-word sentences so I'd have something to say to you instead of the three words that are... that are killing me. The three words that you know I feel but I can't say them, because it would be cruel to say them because I am no good for you. I don't want to torture you. I don't want to look at you longingly when I know I can't be with you. So, yeah, I'm smiling and I'm saying 'take care now.' I'm letting you off the hook. I'm trying. I'm trying so hard to let you off the hook. I'm trying to make it right, what I did to you. Can't you see that? I'm just trying to make it right.

What do you mean he wrote in your hand?
He just grabbed my hand, and he squeezed it and he wrote with his finger.
He wrote with his finger?
You know in my hand, he wrote 007.
[grabs Meredith's hand and proceeds to write on it using her finger] Okay, what did I write?
You mean this might not be O'Malley?
Did anybody try to phone O'Malleyf? Can we get him on the phone?
[Everybody retrieves their cell phones and start calling]
I'm telling you he squeezed my hand.
[hushes Meredith] Shut it! You don't get to talk anymore! You don't get to talk ever again!
I could have sworn it was George.
[voiceover] Grief may be a thing we all have in common, but it looks different on everyone.
It isn't just death we have to grieve. It's life. It's loss. It's change.
And when we wonder why it has to suck so much sometimes, has to hurt so bad. The thing we gotta try to remember is that it can turn on a dime.
That's how you stay alive. When it hurts so much you can't breathe, that's how you survive.
By remembering that one day, somehow, impossibly, you won't feel this way. It won't hurt this much.
Grief comes in its own time for everyone, in its own way.
Owen
So the best we can do, the best anyone can do, is try for honesty.
The really crappy thing, the very worst part of grief is that you can't control it.
The best we can do is try to let ourselves feel it when it comes.
And let it go when we can.
The very worst part is that the minute you think you're past it, it starts all over again.
And always, every time, it takes your breath away.
There are five stages of grief. They look different on all of us, but there are always five.
Owen
You.
Owen
Yeah you. You come over here... why did you tell me this now?!
Owen
You didn't say a thing. All those times, all those years. So why now?
Owen
You don't know?!
I don't know, I don't-what does it matter to you, you never felt the same way-
Owen
Of course I did! Of course I did, I had all those feelings for you Teddy for years, but you never gave me anything.
You were engaged, you were engaged, you were engaged you idiot! [spoken at the same time as below line]
Owen
You never gave for years! You never gave me one damn hint!
You idiot. I have loved you... forever. I have loved you when I was coupled up. I have loved you when I was single. I have loved you every second of every day...
Owen
Teddy...
I love you. I'm in love with you.
Owen
I'm in love with Cristina.
Where have you been? You just disappeared. I left you, like, ten messages. Are you drunk? [Owen grabs her and kisses her, she pulls away] Wait, what? What? What?
Owen
You make me sad. You think that surgery is going to make you feel... you think that a successful career is gonna make you happy. You think you know things; you know things and nothing else matters. No one else matters. People do matter. I matter. We... we matter. So you don't get to toss me aside. I won't let you.
[running a simulation] Sir! You said the helicopter was gonna be here hours ago, And it's not here, and I'm not complaining, but where is it?
Hunt
Well, the rain's still pretty bad. Probably got caught in a hail storm.
[Intern Steve approaches with index card update on "patient's" condition]
No! No! I know what that card is gonna say. It's gonna say he has cardiac tamponade with associated hypotension and bradycardia, but he can't, 'cause I already did a pericardiocentesis and bolused with IV fluids.
SSteve
She's right. What do I do? Do I ...
Karev! Grab his feet. [Karev goes to grab Steve's feet] The patient! Come on!
Owen
Hey, hey, hey. Whoa, whoa, whoa.
This is awesome! [helping to load dummy onto ambulance]
Owen
Whoa, whoa, whoa. What do you think you're doing? This ambulance is not in play.
Oh, you're just making stuff up, which I can do too! And I say it is in play. Can't fit nine patients on an ambulance, but two will fit just fine. Seven of my patients may have died today, but these two won't! 'Cause I'm gonna get them on this ambulance, and I'm gonna take 'em to that hospital right there!
Owen
Kepner, this ambulance was involved in the accident and no longer runs.
There are keys in the ignition, so let's see. Looks like I got triple-A. Ha! Apparently they could get here when the helicopter couldn't. Now MOVE! Or I will run you down!
Owen
[to Alex] Go. Let's go. [They run to hospital entrance. Ambulance pulls up]
John Doe, multiple chest and extremity trauma. Still hypotensive despite two large-bore IVs started in the field.
Owen
All right, Kepner. That's enough.
We need a full workup and likely a thoracotomy. [walks into hospital carrying dummy over her shoulder] I suspect active bleeding in the chest.
Will you tell us we won, or she's never gonna stop.
Owen
It's not a contest.
Karev! Call the OR and make sure that there's a room available.
Owen
All right, all right, fine. Blue team wins.
Owen
Yeah, yeah, yeah, you win. He's gonna live for 40 more years and have 15 grandkids. You happy?
[drops dummy] Blue team wins!
Owen
Yes.
