The Eminence quotes from What If...?

The Eminence

Time. Space. Reality. To the primitive mind, a linear path. But in truth, they are a prism of infinite realities, where every choice has a consequence, creating alternate worlds beyond what you could possibly imagine. I am the Eminence. I preserve the sanctity of the Multiverse by observing those who are sworn to observe it. Watching the Watchers to ensure they do not dare ponder the most dangerous question of all... What if?

The Eminence

What has he done?

He has broken his oath. Again.

We cannot allow this to stand.

The Eminence

No. So from here on, we must continue to watch him.

The Watcher

Wow. Another one that ended up better than it could have.

The Eminence

[appearing behind the Watcher] Because of you. You swore an oath, but so did we. And we can no longer allow your interferences to go unanswered.

It's just so much. How can anyone ever be expected to take it all in?

The Eminence

Well, not everyone can. But you are not just anyone. You are a disciple of the Order of the Watchers. Of me. It's natural to fear a new beginning, my friend. We're asked to sacrifice so much. Our wills, our wants, even our own names for the powers we are given. But of everyone I have ever trained, I have never been more certain of a disciple's devotion to our mission.

Me? Why?

The Eminence

Well, because I know you do not fear sacrifice.
