[To Quarren] I want to see your version of what happened.
[Scene changes to the briefing room of the Warship: Voyager]
We've already drained two phaser banks, and it hasn't did anything!
Perhaps if you looked at your console once in a while instead of chasing the female ensigns, you'd see otherwise.
Tom's right; this war was supposed to be over in five minutes!
Chakotay
[To Tom Paris] You have a better idea, lieutenant?
As a matter of fact, I do: fighter shuttles. A direct assault.
NNelix
[To Tom Paris] Led by you? Good luck.
Watch your mouth, hedgehog!
Chakotay
I haven't heard a single good idea.
Then propose something, first officer! Earn your rank for once! [Chakotay punches Tom Paris in the stomach while Neelix, Harry Kim and Tuvok try to separate them]
Gentlemen... [the fight continues] Gentlemen! [Captain Janeway pulls her phaser out and shoots a console, which breaks the fight] Save it for the holodeck! We've got a war to fight. We've only been attacking the Kyrian military instillation--a mistake. We should target the general population.
CDThe [Cyborg] Doctor
Excellent idea, captain. I've examined the Kyrian genome and they'd be vulnerable to any number of biological weapons.
How soon could you have one ready?
CDThe [Cyborg] Doctor
Within the hour.
Chakotay
B'Elanna, why are you intentionally trying to hurt yourself?
Chakotay
Are you trying to commit suicide?
Chakotay
Then why?
Because.. Because, if I sprain my ankle, at least I feel something.
Chakotay
What do you mean?
I'm not trying to kill myself! I'm trying to see if I'm still alive.
Chakotay
I don't understand.
When you look at those corpses, how do you feel?
Chakotay
Sad, angry, maybe a little guilty that I wasn't there to die with them.
Not me. I don't feel anything at all.
Chakotay
B'Elanna, the Maquis were like our adopted family, I can understand you trying to block out that kind of pain.
You don't understand. It's not just the pain. I don't feel anything. Not about my dead friends, not about Tom, you, my job.
Chakotay
Maybe you're afraid if you let yourself start to feel something, you might not be able to stop.
Why do I get the feeling you're not just interested in tachyon fields?
Chakotay
This could be the greatest anthropological find of my career. If there's an intelligent species down there, we'll be able to track their development. Not just for days or weeks, but for centuries.
Watch them discover new and better ways of beating each other over the head.
Chakotay
They won't necessarily follow the Klingon model.
As opposed to the human model?
Chakotay
Anterian cider. Not the replicated stuff. There are only a couple of bottles left, and I don't want Mr. Neelix getting his hands on them.
Well, then you should store them with the salvaged Borg components. Neelix never inventories those containers. He says they give him the creeps.
Chakotay
Officer level thinking, Icheb.
Doesn't seem like my first command is shaping up the way I expected.
Chakotay
"In the middle of the journey of our life, I found myself astray in a dark wood, where the straight road had been lost."
I didn't know Dante's Inferno was on the Maquis' reading list.
Chakotay
Actually, I borrowed your copy.
My fiancé gave me that book as an engagement gift. I've never leant it to anyone.
Chakotay
Not yet. Anyway, I agree with Dante. If you always see the road ahead of you, it's not worth the trip.
A solider and a philosopher. Your intelligence file doesn't do you justice.
Chakotay
With all due respect, it's a little presumptuous to think you have the right to change everyone's future.
From what I've seen, they'll thank me.
Chakotay
All you've seen are bits and pieces. You're getting the whole picture.
Really? Just what am I missing?
Chakotay
It's not "what". It's "who". People like Seven of Nine. A Borg drone who'll become a member of this crew after you help her recover her humanity. Or Tom Paris. A former convict who'll me our pilot, chief medic, and a husband to B'Elanna Torres.
That angry woman I just met?
Chakotay
She's gonna be your chief engineer. Two crews, Maquis and Starfleet, are going to become one. And they'll make as big a mark on the Delta Quadrant as it'll on them. By protecting people like the Ocampans. Curing diseases. Encouraging peace. Children like Naomi and Icheb are gonna grow up on this ship and call it home. And we'll all be following a captain who sets a course for Earth and never stops believing that we'll get there.
Are you going to be lecturing me like this for the next seven years?
Chakotay
Don't worry. You'll always get the last word.
Mind if I ask you one last question?
Chakotay
Will I have to break the Temporal Prime Directive to answer it?
Maybe, just a little. For two people who started off as enemies, it seems we get to know each other pretty well. So I've been wondering.... just how close do we get?
Chakotay
Let's just say there are some barriers we never cross.
(Tom Paris runs The Doctor's program "Photons Be Free" and skips to the first chapter, the chapter opens in into sickbay where it has taken heavy damage)
[playing as an EMH] Please state the nature of the medical emergency.
EEnsign
Our doctor's dead--we got wounded! [Walks him over to two patients lying on the biobeds] They're both badly hurt. Who should we treat first?
Uhh... [begins scanning a patient with a tricorder] second-degree plasma burns. [walks over to another patient and begins scanning] He's got an aortic rupture. Get him to the surgical bay now! [the Ensign picks up the patient and walks him over to the surgical bay, a character who looks like Chakotay walks in carrying a wounded officer]
Chakotay
[To Tom Paris] You! Over here! [Tom Paris walks over to the injured character and gazes at him because the officer is based off of his own physical parameters]
Umm... nothing. [Begins scanning the officer] He's got a mild concussion. I'm going to have to treat the others first.
Chakotay
I need Lieutenant Marseille on the bridge. You'll treat him now.
As I understand it, my job is to treat the critical patients first. So if you'll excuse me... [Tom Paris walks over to the critically injured patient, but Chakotay raises a force field]
Chakotay
I don't know who you think you are, hologram, but to me you're just another piece of technology.
But apparently, I'm a piece of technology that's in demand, so why don't you go back to the bridge and let me do my job?! [Captain Janeway walks into sickbay]
Chakotay
Our medical hologram is refusing to treat Mr. Marseille. [Janeway walks over to Tom Paris]
I need my helmsman back to his station.
Lieutenant Marseille is not seriously hurt. This man will be dead in five minutes if I don't operate. [Janeway looks over to Chakotay]
Drop the force field. [Chakotay complies. Janeway walks over to the critically injured patient, pulls out a phaser, and kills him] That patient is dead. Now you're free to treat Lieutenant Marseille. [Tom Paris is shocked]
