[First lines. The opening cutscene of Pokémon Red and Blue (Red and Green in Japan) plays, portraying a battle between a Gengar and a Nidorino. Near the end, the cutscene transitions from the Game Boy's 8-bit graphics to vivid cel animation, revealing the battle to be happening in a packed stadium.]

SAStadium Announcer

And Nidorino begins the battle with a Horn Attack! Oh, but Gengar bounces right back, [Gengar uses Hypnosis] and there it is, the Hypnosis Power of Gengar! This could be the end of Nidorino. [Nidorino gets recalled by his trainer] Wait, the trainer recalled Nidorino. Which Pokémon will he use now? [the trainer throws a green and white Poké ball, Gengar steps back and out comes an Onix] Oh, it's Onix! Now this giant Pokémon's on the attack. [the camera pulls back to reveal that the battle is on television] Ho-ho, but Gengar jumps aside! Gengar is moving beautifully today. Its training is top-notch, no doubt about it!

[As the commentary on TV continues, a spikey haired boy named Ash Ketchum puts on a green fingerless glove.]

[in his mind] Yes, I am Ash. [the camera cuts to him in his room, He wore a red and white cap with a dark green L like symbol and a blue and white buttoned short sleeved shirt under a dark slate gray shirt, and light blue cuffed jeans]

Ash Ketchum is a boy from Pallet Town.

[We see a Poliwag-style pencil sharpener, a Clefairy-shaped piggy bank and two Zubats hanging on a hanger. We then see the boy, Ash Ketchum, putting his white trainers on]

[speaks] And now that I'm 10, I can finally get my Pokémon license.

[The camera shows a poster with a Squirtle, a Bulbasaur and a Charmander]

10-year-olds can get a beginner Pokémon from Professor Oak, the town's Pokémon expert.

[puts on his hat, then flips it backwards] I will journey to gain the wisdom of Pokémon training, [picks up a Voltorb alarm clock and gets a green Speed Stripes background behind him] and I hereby declare to the Pokémon of the world; I will be a Pokémon Master. Pokémon Master! That is what I'll-

DKDelia Ketchum

[offscreen] Ash, get to bed! [Ash yelps and flings the Voltorb alarm clock toward her, who catches it and shows Ash the time] It's 11:00, and you should be asleep!

But tomorrow, I begin my Pokémon journey. I can't even sleep.

DKDelia Ketchum

Well, if you can't sleep, at least get ready for tomorrow, so, here, watch this. [changes channels on Ash's television]

[on TV] Good evening, Pallet, tomorrow's the big day for the newest class of Pokémon students. I'd like to introduce you to Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle. Each one is available for new trainees. Which one shall you choose?

DKDelia Ketchum

Go to bed when this is done.

[seeing the commercial] Alright, I'm going.

DDelia

And change into your pajamas, OK? [closes the door]

[on TV] ...character to help them develop their special powers.

I'm going.

[Cut to title card]

Ash [narrating] "Pokémon, I Choose You!"

DDelia

I packed your sneakers and jeans, nice clean shirts and underwear, and your favorite snacks, and some hot chocolate in case you want something hot, but be careful not to burn yourself. And a pair of rubber gloves to do your laundry and a new clothesline to hang it out to dry, and-

Mom, you are embarrassing me, in front of all these people! Don't you know, I'm a big kid now? Pokémon Trainers can take care of themselves.

Your mother's been worried about you, Ash. She says she still thinks of you as her little pumpkin.

That makes me sound like a baby.

DDelia

You'll always be my baby, won't you?

Yeah.

DDelia

Well, I just hope you aren't eating a lot of junk food and getting into any trouble.

Of course not! [suddenly remembers his boat accident] At least not a lotta trouble.

DDelia

What's that mean?

MMoe

I'm the one who got into trouble, Mrs. Ketchum. Ash helped out at my restaurant when I really needed help. But even more importantly, your son has been a great inspiration to me.

DDelia

That's wonderful! What a relief.

Thanks, Moe.

[at the beginning of the episode, Ash is moping around, annoyed about how his Charizard cost him the match at the Indigo Plateau...]

[thinking] Why did I have to lose?

[worried] Pika-pi.

So, he's been laying in there by himself since he had lost the match.

Yeah, he won't even eat or anything. Will he?

DDelia

Maybe he's coming down with a cold.

No, silly, he's just depressed is all.

Depressed about what?!

DDelia

About the match?!

[nods his head 'yes'] I see. I think that he feels like a total loser 'cause Ritchie beat him. Did he?

He should be happy he made it all the way to the Fifth Round. I know he feels bad, but he can't just mope around forever. Can he? [opens the door and walks into the room to get Ash] Hey, Ash, let's go get something to eat.

No, thanks.

[groans] Well, how about a walk?

Go by yourself if you can.

[groans in frustration] Hey, let's go down the Pokemon village and buy some souvenirs. [tries to get Ash up from the bed] Maybe they'll have some--

[pulls away] Just leave us alone.

Suit yourself. Hey, I'm just trying to help you, Ash.

[sits up] Well, I don't want your help.

You big baby!

[stands up from the bed] Just get out.

OK. I'll leave you alone.

[tries to calm them down] Pika-pika!

[Brock and Delia run in]

Okay now, that's enough, guys.

DDelia

You mustn't be angry with Misty, honey. She thinks you should be very happy.

Well, why?

With the way you were training, you are lucky we even made it through the First Round.

Oh, yeah? Well, I didn't see you out there winning any of those matches.

When are you gonna get over yourself, Ash?

Why don't you?

Why don't I what?

[tries to calm them down] Pika...

[restrains Ash] Okay, that's it.

Thank you for saving me, Brock.

Pika...

[walks in] I'm afraid Misty has a point, Ash.

Huh? I see.

Maybe you could've gone much further if you haven't been so sure of yourself and you trained your Charizard properly.

But, sir, I...

One could only advance so far relying on strength and intuition. Trainers must learn to battle with a deeper understanding of each Pokémon's natural abilities.

Uh... Hmm...

That isn't easy, especially for some lazy Trainers.

Are you calling me lazy?

I didn't call anybody anything. I was talking to Pikachu.

[The episode opens on a footpath as the camera pans up to reveal that the footpath actually leads to Pallet Town]

After battling in the Pokémon League competition at the Indigo Plateau... [The camera fades to outside Professor Oak's Laboratory where a party is about to start] ...Ash and his friends return to Pallet Town for a hero's welcome.

[We see Ash, Pikachu, Professor Oak and Delia standing on a yellow table, holding drinks. Misty and Brock, meanwhile, are standing on the grass and holding their drinks]

Uh, I'm very happy to be back in Pallet home, and to everybody who supported me throughout the Pokémon League, I just want to say "thank you very much."

Pikachu.

And thanks to Ash for representing us so well.

DDelia

And we all owe Professor Oak a big thank you for hosting us here today. Now, let's start the party!

First, let's salute Ash for finishing in the top 16 at the Pokémon League, and doing Pallet Town proud! Hip hip...

CCrowd

Hooray!

[Ash crouches down to Pikachu]

Thank you, too, Pikachu. And all the Pokémon. [Clings glasses with Pikachu]

Pika!

[The title card comes up]

[voiceover] Pallet Party Panic.

[Soon, everyone is eating as Brock bites into a bit of chicken]

[with his mouth full] Mmmm, Pallet Town really knows how to throw a party! [Eats a bit of his candy stick] The food is delicious!

Hey, guys, we shouldn't be the only ones celebrating, why don't we let our Pokémon join the party, too?

Good idea! We couldn't have gone to the Pokémon League without them.

Pikachu.

[With his mouth full] You're right. Geodude, Onix, Zubat, Vulpix, it's time to come out and chow down! Aaaah, ah!

Goldeen, Staryu, Psyduck, you're invited, too! Go!

[Brock and Misty's Pokémon come out of their Poké balls]

Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Pidgeotto, join the party! [Sends out Squirtle, Bulbasaur and Pidgeotto]

Squirtle.

Bulbasaur.

Chariza... [Brock and Misty stop him] Ahh!

Think about this first, Ash!

Letting Charizard out is not such a great idea, Ash!

But, I... [Thinks back to when Charizard disobeyed him, breathes fire at him and napped during the Indigo League, thus costing Ash his match in Round 5 and letting Ritchie win. Then, Ash returns to the present] OK, OK. I'll invite Charizard next time.

Okay, everybody! Time to dig in!

[The Pokémon join in as Psyduck trips up]

PPsyduck

Psy!

Bulba. Bulbasaur. [Walks over Psyduck]

[The camera cuts Staryu, Goldeen, Geodude and Squirtle]

GGeodude

Geodude.

Squirtle, Squirtle.

[Pidgeotto and Zubat join them. The camera cuts to Brock and Misty]

Ash must be really proud.

I think he's grown up a lot since being in the Pokémon League. Don't you? Huh?

MBMisty & Brock

Huh?

Where's Ash?

[Ash and Pikachu are running as they run past some of the partygoers]

Let's eat fast so we can eat again! [Laughs]

Pikachu.

[sighs]

S2 E28 Pallet Party Panic
View quote →

[Ash, Brock, Misty, Pikachu, and Togepi are eating breakfast after a sleepless Ash became agitated over which Pokémon to use against Gary.]

So, what type of Pokémon does Gary have the most of?

[munching on a sandwich] Toge!

Brock Gary's got all kinds. He doesn't really favor one type!

All different types?! He really is a chip off the old Oak block!

Not only that, they're all first class and in tiptop shape, so he must've rotated them a lot!

He did. He's been that way for as long as I've known the guy.

And since he doesn't prefer one particular Pokémon over another, it'll be a different story than battling someone like Misty with all one type, so putting your team together is crucial.

[An anxious Ash looks up towards the sky, where large wings can be seen as a cloud reveals them.]

Huh? [The wings are revealed to belong to Ash's ace, Charizard!] Hey, look guys!

BMBrock and Misty

Huh?

Pika?

[Charizard roars.]

[dancing for joy] It's Charizard!! [He laughs in triumph, but then groans as he is greeted as usual by Charizard's Flamethrower, being turned into soot and falling over, but because Ash is Ash, he survives anyway.]

Charizard?

Uh-huh. I made a phone call to Liza late last night.

Am I glad to see you! Thanks! You sure came at a great time!

[Charizard roars happily]

Huh? [Gary appears to greet him right before the match, leading them to begin a stare-off.]

It's... Gary.

Pika?

Toge?

[The two just look at each other for a few moments before greeting each other.]

Morning, Ash.

[begrudgingly] Good morning.

[The staring contest intensifies, until a cheerful Professor Oak shows up who previously watched Ash's matches on TV.]

This calls for a poem!

Huh?

Waah! Professor Oak!

Grandpa!

Rivals, now they meet, / Gary, Ash to compete.

DDelia

Brilliant!

Mom?

Pika!

Hi there!

It's been a long time!

DDelia

We just had to come!

To cheer you both on!

Professor, thank you! Thank you!

DDelia

It is the Victory Tournament! I just had to see it live!

My, my, my! You two will be facing off, eh?

Uh, yeah.

Uh-huh.

Well, lighten up and relax, you two. If you both keep acting this tense, by tomorrow, you won't even be able to compete!

[smiling] Guess you're right.

Now that's more like it.

[Just before Ash, Brock, and Misty leave to choose Ash's Pokémon for the fight against Gary, Delia and Ash share a final exchange.]

Huh?

DDelia

I just wanted you to know that I think you're a wonderful Pokémon Trainer, and I'm proud of all your hard work and training! I'm sure you'll make me the proudest mom there could be.

[Nodding] Mm. I'll do my best!

Ah... Rivals for so long, and now they battle each other at the Victory Tournament!

DDelia

This will be a match to remember.

[Gary's Blastoise has knocked out Ash's Bayleef, leaving him with three Pokémon left while his rival still has five.]

Gary is pretty impressive... but so are we!

AAnnouncer

Ladies and gentlemen, we'll take a five-minute intermission here, giving Ash time to regroup after losing three of his Pokémon.

[pleading] Pika-pi! Pikachu, Pikachu!

Hey, Pikachu, what is it?

Ash, I think it's asking if it can battle!

Well, it makes sense. Gary IS using a Water Pokémon.

Togeprri!

I wish I could, buddy, but I'm only allowed to use the Pokémon I registered before the match.

[in protest] Pika!! [He crosses his arms.]

Those two battling so fiercely has got my stomach in knots!

DDelia

They've never changed.

Oh? How do you mean?

DDelia

Gary was always the confident one taking the lead with Ash right behind, struggling to keep up with him!

He may not admit it, but I think that Gary considers Ash his most important friend of all.

DDelia

I think Ash feels the same way!

[A buzzer sounds, signaling the end of the intermission.]

[At Professor Rowan's laboratory, Ash and Pikachu are admiring Ash's package from his mother, Delia]

Wow. [The camera cuts to him inside the lab and checking out his new clothes] Check out the new clothes.

Pika.

She even put a new backpack in there, too.

[The camera cuts to Ash's house in Pallet Town]

DDelia

[from inside the house] I'm thrilled! Such a handsome young man.

[We can see that Delia is communicating with Ash, now in his red and black cap is newer, a darker bluish-gray vest with a snazzy looking point collar and a distinct golden yellow horizontal stripe across the chest, via flatscreen phone]

That's really nice of you, Mom.

DDelia

I wanted to give them to you while you were here, but you flew out of the house in such a rush.

Sorry about that, Mom. But everything's going just great here in the Sinnoh region, and I can't tell you how psyched I am.

DDelia

I can see that! You did call Professor Oak and tell him Pikachu's safe, right?

Aah!

[Soon, Professor Oak is communicating with Ash from his lab]

I appreciate you letting me know the good news, young man.

And this is Dawn. She saved Pikachu. [to Dawn] And this is Professor Oak.

It's a real honour to meet you, sir.

Well, it's a pleasure to to meet you, a brand new trainer.

Right. I hope you don't mind... You love Pokémon poetry, don't you?

Uh!

Huh?

Yes, I do.

Awesome! Does that mean you know all the Pokémon poets?

You don't get it. He's a real professor, just like Professor Rowan.

But how come I always see him on TV reading poems?

How come...? Well...

[walks in] Say, perhaps the good professor and I should have a little discussion

Well, well, professor! Say, Ash, may I speak with him for a moment?

Sure. [He walks away with Dawn and Brock as Professor Rowan starts conferring with Professor Oak]

Perhaps you could spend a little less time reading Pokémon poetry on TV and more time doing your Pokémon research, eh, Samuel?

Right, I'll do that.

Those two must go way back.

Guess so.

So, what are you two doing here, anyway?

Well, I came here so I could compete in the Sinnoh League and win.

[Brock takes out a guidebook from inside his orange vest]

Okay, it looks like the closest gym to Sandgem Town is in Oreburgh City. Jubilife City's right on the way.

That's awesome! Can I go too?

ABAsh & Brock

Huh?

I want to be the number one contest coordinator, and the first contest I want to compete in is in Jubilife City.

That's great! Come along. When it comes to travelling, the more the merrier, I say.

Pikachu.

Brock, what do you think?

Of course. It'd be a lot of fun.

[Aipom, Piplup and Starly join Ash, Dawn and Brock]

It looks like everybody agrees.

Piplup?

And I'll get to spend some more time with Pikachu.

Pika, Pika!

[The episode opens with a scene featuring Zekrom, the Deep Black Pokémon, on the top half of the screen, and Reshiram, the Vast White Pokémon, on the bottom half. The scene mixes into the world of Pokémon from space]

The Pokémon world. [The camera zooms in on the planet] A world teeming with the most amazing creatures imaginable... [The camera pans across the sea, some countryside and a town nearby] ...Populating the land, the sea and the air. [The screen fades to white] Wherever you may find yourself, chances are Pokémon will be there, too. [Fade to Ash's house in Pallet Town] And that includes the Kanto region's Pallet Town... [The camera cuts to Ash putting a blue and white zipping hoodie on in his bedroom] ...home to this young man... [Pikachu jumps onto Ash's shoulder] ...ten-year-old Ash Ketchum, a Pokémon trainer dreaming of one day becoming a Pokémon Master.

[Ash picks up his backpack, leaves the room and then comes back in]

Oops. Yeah! [Picks up his hat and puts it on] Mm. Pikachu, psyched?

Pika!

Me too. Taking a trip with mom. Can't remember the last time we did that, you know?

DDelia

Ash, Professor Oak is here to pick us up.

Great.

Pika!

Huh? [His mom sorts his hat out]

DDelia

Hm. There. Perfect.

[Final lines in the Best Wishes series. The next day, a plane touches down on the runaway at the airport. Inside the airport building, Ash, who is now wearing some new clothes for when he goes to Kalos, is standing next to Alexa and talking to his mother and Professor Oak]

All right. I'll call you when I get to the Kalos region.

DDelia

Pikachu, take good care of Ash for me.

My boy, I'm looking forward to hearing all about your new Pokémon.

Right!

Pika!

DDelia

[off camera] Hmm.

Mom, what?

DDelia

You. Nice clothes.

Huh? Mom, you're embarrassing me!

DDelia

Please, Alexa. Get him to Kalos safely.

I give you my word.

DDelia

[to Ash] I'll see you soon. Take care.

Don't worry, Mom. You too.

Pika-pika!

[Later, the plane that's bound for the Kalos region is taking off as it leaves the airport. Professor Oak and Delia, meanwhile, have seen it flying off from behind a tall fence]

Well, Ash is off on another adventure.

DDelia

Good luck, darling. I'll always be rooting for you. [The wind blows through her hair]

[Onboard the plane, Ash and Pikachu are sitting next to Alexa]

Kalos region, here I come!

And so, as Ash bids farewell to Pallet Town and the Kanto region, the Kalos region awaits, with the promise of new and thrilling adventures. With the dream of Pokémon mastery stronger than ever, Ash and Pikachu are off again as the journey continues.

[An image of Ash and Pikachu appears above the text that reads NEXT TIME... A NEW BEGINNING!]
