Professor OakI can't write a good poem without rhymes, and you can't be a good Pokémon trainer without catching more Pokémon.
Professor OakIt's too late for pointers, young man! If you're not ready for the Pokémon League now, you should quit and go home!!
Professor Oak"Ash does the impossible, as usual."
[First lines. The opening cutscene of Pokémon Red and Blue (Red and Green in Japan) plays, portraying a battle between a Gengar and a Nidorino. Near the end, the cutscene transitions from the Game Boy's 8-bit graphics to vivid cel animation, revealing the battle to be happening in a packed stadium.]
And Nidorino begins the battle with a Horn Attack! Oh, but Gengar bounces right back, [Gengar uses Hypnosis] and there it is, the Hypnosis Power of Gengar! This could be the end of Nidorino. [Nidorino gets recalled by his trainer] Wait, the trainer recalled Nidorino. Which Pokémon will he use now? [the trainer throws a green and white Poké ball, Gengar steps back and out comes an Onix] Oh, it's Onix! Now this giant Pokémon's on the attack. [the camera pulls back to reveal that the battle is on television] Ho-ho, but Gengar jumps aside! Gengar is moving beautifully today. Its training is top-notch, no doubt about it!
[As the commentary on TV continues, a spikey haired boy named Ash Ketchum puts on a green fingerless glove.]
[in his mind] Yes, I am Ash. [the camera cuts to him in his room, He wore a red and white cap with a dark green L like symbol and a blue and white buttoned short sleeved shirt under a dark slate gray shirt, and light blue cuffed jeans]
Ash Ketchum is a boy from Pallet Town.
[We see a Poliwag-style pencil sharpener, a Clefairy-shaped piggy bank and two Zubats hanging on a hanger. We then see the boy, Ash Ketchum, putting his white trainers on]
[speaks] And now that I'm 10, I can finally get my Pokémon license.
[The camera shows a poster with a Squirtle, a Bulbasaur and a Charmander]
10-year-olds can get a beginner Pokémon from Professor Oak, the town's Pokémon expert.
[puts on his hat, then flips it backwards] I will journey to gain the wisdom of Pokémon training, [picks up a Voltorb alarm clock and gets a green Speed Stripes background behind him] and I hereby declare to the Pokémon of the world; I will be a Pokémon Master. Pokémon Master! That is what I'll-
[offscreen] Ash, get to bed! [Ash yelps and flings the Voltorb alarm clock toward her, who catches it and shows Ash the time] It's 11:00, and you should be asleep!
But tomorrow, I begin my Pokémon journey. I can't even sleep.
Well, if you can't sleep, at least get ready for tomorrow, so, here, watch this. [changes channels on Ash's television]
Professor Oak[on TV] Good evening, Pallet, tomorrow's the big day for the newest class of Pokémon students. I'd like to introduce you to Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle. Each one is available for new trainees. Which one shall you choose?
Go to bed when this is done.
[seeing the commercial] Alright, I'm going.
And change into your pajamas, OK? [closes the door]
Professor Oak[on TV] ...character to help them develop their special powers.
I'm going.
[Cut to title card]
Ash [narrating] "Pokémon, I Choose You!"
Professor OakWhen my grandson Gary said that you wouldn't have a single new Pokémon by the time you got to Viridian City, I bet him $1,000,000 that he'd be wrong!
[surprised] Well, money isn't everything, right?
Professor Oak[dejected] Oh, why do I even bother?
Prof. OakYour mother's been worried about you, Ash. She says she still thinks of you as her little pumpkin.
That makes me sound like a baby.
You'll always be my baby, won't you?
Yeah.
Well, I just hope you aren't eating a lot of junk food and getting into any trouble.
Of course not! [suddenly remembers his boat accident] At least not a lotta trouble.
What's that mean?
I'm the one who got into trouble, Mrs. Ketchum. Ash helped out at my restaurant when I really needed help. But even more importantly, your son has been a great inspiration to me.
That's wonderful! What a relief.
Thanks, Moe.
Professor Oak[chuckles] It's been quite a while since Ash sent me a new Pokémon. I wonder what he's captured this time? [a Poke Ball popped open, and as Professor Oak held his nose, out of it comes a very rancid Muk!] Hmm? Ugh! What is that smell?! Ew... What's the idea of sending me a Muk?! Yecch!
MUK!!!
[at the beginning of the episode, Ash is moping around, annoyed about how his Charizard cost him the match at the Indigo Plateau...]
[thinking] Why did I have to lose?
[worried] Pika-pi.
Professor OakSo, he's been laying in there by himself since he had lost the match.
Yeah, he won't even eat or anything. Will he?
Maybe he's coming down with a cold.
No, silly, he's just depressed is all.
Professor OakDepressed about what?!
About the match?!
[nods his head 'yes'] I see. I think that he feels like a total loser 'cause Ritchie beat him. Did he?
He should be happy he made it all the way to the Fifth Round. I know he feels bad, but he can't just mope around forever. Can he? [opens the door and walks into the room to get Ash] Hey, Ash, let's go get something to eat.
No, thanks.
[groans] Well, how about a walk?
Go by yourself if you can.
[groans in frustration] Hey, let's go down the Pokemon village and buy some souvenirs. [tries to get Ash up from the bed] Maybe they'll have some--
[pulls away] Just leave us alone.
Suit yourself. Hey, I'm just trying to help you, Ash.
[sits up] Well, I don't want your help.
You big baby!
[stands up from the bed] Just get out.
OK. I'll leave you alone.
[tries to calm them down] Pika-pika!
[Brock and Delia run in]
Okay now, that's enough, guys.
You mustn't be angry with Misty, honey. She thinks you should be very happy.
Well, why?
With the way you were training, you are lucky we even made it through the First Round.
Oh, yeah? Well, I didn't see you out there winning any of those matches.
When are you gonna get over yourself, Ash?
Why don't you?
Why don't I what?
[tries to calm them down] Pika...
[restrains Ash] Okay, that's it.
Thank you for saving me, Brock.
Pika...
Professor Oak[walks in] I'm afraid Misty has a point, Ash.
Huh? I see.
Professor OakMaybe you could've gone much further if you haven't been so sure of yourself and you trained your Charizard properly.
But, sir, I...
Professor OakOne could only advance so far relying on strength and intuition. Trainers must learn to battle with a deeper understanding of each Pokémon's natural abilities.
Uh... Hmm...
That isn't easy, especially for some lazy Trainers.
Are you calling me lazy?
I didn't call anybody anything. I was talking to Pikachu.
I said I didn't, and I didn't!
I said you did, because you did!
I didn't!
You did!
Did not!
Did too!
Did too!
You did not!
Pika, Pika! (Quiet, you two!) [he shocks everyone]
Professor OakDon't shock us, too!
Thank you, Pikachu.
[The episode opens on a footpath as the camera pans up to reveal that the footpath actually leads to Pallet Town]
After battling in the Pokémon League competition at the Indigo Plateau... [The camera fades to outside Professor Oak's Laboratory where a party is about to start] ...Ash and his friends return to Pallet Town for a hero's welcome.
[We see Ash, Pikachu, Professor Oak and Delia standing on a yellow table, holding drinks. Misty and Brock, meanwhile, are standing on the grass and holding their drinks]
Uh, I'm very happy to be back in Pallet home, and to everybody who supported me throughout the Pokémon League, I just want to say "thank you very much."
Pikachu.
Professor OakAnd thanks to Ash for representing us so well.
And we all owe Professor Oak a big thank you for hosting us here today. Now, let's start the party!
Professor OakFirst, let's salute Ash for finishing in the top 16 at the Pokémon League, and doing Pallet Town proud! Hip hip...
Hooray!
[Ash crouches down to Pikachu]
Thank you, too, Pikachu. And all the Pokémon. [Clings glasses with Pikachu]
Pika!
[The title card comes up]
[voiceover] Pallet Party Panic.
[Soon, everyone is eating as Brock bites into a bit of chicken]
[with his mouth full] Mmmm, Pallet Town really knows how to throw a party! [Eats a bit of his candy stick] The food is delicious!
Hey, guys, we shouldn't be the only ones celebrating, why don't we let our Pokémon join the party, too?
Good idea! We couldn't have gone to the Pokémon League without them.
Pikachu.
[With his mouth full] You're right. Geodude, Onix, Zubat, Vulpix, it's time to come out and chow down! Aaaah, ah!
Goldeen, Staryu, Psyduck, you're invited, too! Go!
[Brock and Misty's Pokémon come out of their Poké balls]
Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Pidgeotto, join the party! [Sends out Squirtle, Bulbasaur and Pidgeotto]
Squirtle.
Bulbasaur.
Chariza... [Brock and Misty stop him] Ahh!
Think about this first, Ash!
Letting Charizard out is not such a great idea, Ash!
But, I... [Thinks back to when Charizard disobeyed him, breathes fire at him and napped during the Indigo League, thus costing Ash his match in Round 5 and letting Ritchie win. Then, Ash returns to the present] OK, OK. I'll invite Charizard next time.
Okay, everybody! Time to dig in!
[The Pokémon join in as Psyduck trips up]
Psy!
Bulba. Bulbasaur. [Walks over Psyduck]
[The camera cuts Staryu, Goldeen, Geodude and Squirtle]
Geodude.
Squirtle, Squirtle.
[Pidgeotto and Zubat join them. The camera cuts to Brock and Misty]
Ash must be really proud.
I think he's grown up a lot since being in the Pokémon League. Don't you? Huh?
Huh?
Where's Ash?
[Ash and Pikachu are running as they run past some of the partygoers]
Let's eat fast so we can eat again! [Laughs]
Pikachu.
[sighs]
When are we gonna see your big discovery?
Let’s finish this first, then we’ll see.
OakThat’s what I used to say to get you off my back.
Ladies and gentlemen, I've just been informed that there seems to be a bit of confusion as to the exact whereabouts of our torch runner. [He gasps.] This just in: it appears that an unfortunate accident has left our torch runner unable to continue! [This, of course, was courtesy of Team Rocket, who, in another failed attempt to capture Pikachu, caused the runner to sprain his ankle.]
[The crowd can quietly be heard chattering in confusion.]
Now what?!
Toge!
They've got to use the Sacred Flame!
Toge! Toge, Toge!
Togepi?
Pika!
Huh?!
Pika!
[A silhouette of a boy and his Pikachu bearing the torch is revealed to be none other than Ash Ketchum, who was privileged with the role after he and Gary negotiated, seemingly with Mr. Goodshow or another official.]
Look!
Hey, it's Ash!
Toge!
Delia [who is watching from home with Mimey] Oh!
Mime!
Carrying the torch is Ash Ketchum from Pallet Town!
Ohh!
Professor OakMy stars! Now, how did Ash get that torch?!
The Sacred Ho-Oh Flame, from the same Legendary Pokémon that was said to have quelled the battle...
Ah...!
...restoring life to the plains and forests, is now being carried onto the Silver Stadium platform!
[Mr. Goodshow chuckles to himself and stands up as Ash is positioned to light the Sacred Flame.]
[With Mr. Goodshow, Gary and the injured runner, the rest of the semifinals competitors watching, and the crowd watching, Ash turns to the cauldron and lights it with the torch, causing the Sacred Flame to burn brightly in the night sky. The crowd erupts.]
Toge, Toge, Togeprrri!
Yayyy! Hahaha!
[Mr. Goodshow walks up to the podium and clears his throat as he prepares to address the Trainers.]
Mr. Goodshow: Skillful and excited participants! Now that the Ho-Oh Sacred Flame is watching over all of you, battle with honesty, integrity, and honor, so that you will never regret a single moment of your time here!
[The crowd cheers as the camera shows Gary and Harrison standing beside each other, and Ash and Pikachu looking at each other.]
With Ash and Gary's help, the Sacred Ho-Oh Flame burns proudly into the sky, marking the opening of the Johto League Silver Conference! Could this turn of events be a hint of great things to come? Stay tuned!
[The "TO BE CONTINUED" text appears in the bottom right corner.]
[Ash, Brock, Misty, Pikachu, and Togepi are eating breakfast after a sleepless Ash became agitated over which Pokémon to use against Gary.]
So, what type of Pokémon does Gary have the most of?
[munching on a sandwich] Toge!
Brock Gary's got all kinds. He doesn't really favor one type!
All different types?! He really is a chip off the old Oak block!
Not only that, they're all first class and in tiptop shape, so he must've rotated them a lot!
He did. He's been that way for as long as I've known the guy.
And since he doesn't prefer one particular Pokémon over another, it'll be a different story than battling someone like Misty with all one type, so putting your team together is crucial.
[An anxious Ash looks up towards the sky, where large wings can be seen as a cloud reveals them.]
Huh? [The wings are revealed to belong to Ash's ace, Charizard!] Hey, look guys!
Huh?
Pika?
[Charizard roars.]
[dancing for joy] It's Charizard!! [He laughs in triumph, but then groans as he is greeted as usual by Charizard's Flamethrower, being turned into soot and falling over, but because Ash is Ash, he survives anyway.]
Charizard?
Uh-huh. I made a phone call to Liza late last night.
Am I glad to see you! Thanks! You sure came at a great time!
[Charizard roars happily]
Huh? [Gary appears to greet him right before the match, leading them to begin a stare-off.]
It's... Gary.
Pika?
Toge?
[The two just look at each other for a few moments before greeting each other.]
Morning, Ash.
[begrudgingly] Good morning.
[The staring contest intensifies, until a cheerful Professor Oak shows up who previously watched Ash's matches on TV.]
Professor OakThis calls for a poem!
Huh?
Waah! Professor Oak!
Grandpa!
OakRivals, now they meet, / Gary, Ash to compete.
Brilliant!
Mom?
Pika!
Hi there!
It's been a long time!
We just had to come!
OakTo cheer you both on!
Professor, thank you! Thank you!
It is the Victory Tournament! I just had to see it live!
OakMy, my, my! You two will be facing off, eh?
Uh, yeah.
Uh-huh.
OakWell, lighten up and relax, you two. If you both keep acting this tense, by tomorrow, you won't even be able to compete!
[smiling] Guess you're right.
OakNow that's more like it.
[Just before Ash, Brock, and Misty leave to choose Ash's Pokémon for the fight against Gary, Delia and Ash share a final exchange.]
Huh?
I just wanted you to know that I think you're a wonderful Pokémon Trainer, and I'm proud of all your hard work and training! I'm sure you'll make me the proudest mom there could be.
[Nodding] Mm. I'll do my best!
OakAh... Rivals for so long, and now they battle each other at the Victory Tournament!
This will be a match to remember.
[Ash's Heracross has just knocked out Gary's Magmar, leaving both trainers with one Pokémon down.]
I guess it's time to show 'em my best! Deal with this, Ashy Boy! Mwah! [he kisses the Poké Ball, which must mean this Pokémon means quite a lot to him...] Blastoise! I choose you!
Blastoise!
Ah, Blastoise?!
Gary's choice for third Pokémon is Blastoise!
Brock, could that be...
The same Squirtle that Gary originally received from Professor Oak? Yeah, that's the one.
OakIt looks like Gary is anxious to finish this up here and now! Blastoise IS the most powerful Pokémon Gary has.
[Ash and Misty's Pokémon amp up their cheering, knowing of Blastoise's threat to Ash's path to victory over his rival.]
Pikachu! Pika!
Okay, Heracross! Use Fury Swipes!
[charging] Heracross!
Blastoise! Hydro Pump!
Blas...toise! [A powerful Hydro Pump is fired from its cannons, and a shot of the two Pokémon and their Trainers clashing is shown as the episode draws to a conclusion.]
There have been plenty of turnovers in this match already, so the ultimate victor is anyone's guess! But to find out the winner, stay tuned!
[The "TO BE CONTINUED" text appears.]
