Webber

I see that you're angry with me, and may be angry with your mother.

Don't do that! I'm not your friend, and I'm not your family. You don't get to call me into your office on personal business, and you don't get to speak to me this way right now. It's an abuse of power. I'm a resident. I work for you. You have to speak to me like I'm a resident. And for the record Chief, somebody had to stand up for that little girl, and I make no apologies for that.

Webber

You wanna just be a resident? Fine. Alright then. That woman is a victim of domestic violence. This hospital is supposed to be a safe place for her to come and tell her story. And as her doctors it is our job to help her. You did not do your job. Instead you further battered a battered woman.

What about the little girl!

Webber

Dr. Grey! You will stay away from that child. You will stay away from that family. You will not come within 100 feet of them. And if you do, you will be suspended from this hospital pending reevaluation of your emotional and mental fitness for residency.

Oh great, is this another heart to heart?

Webber

I know you don't like me, and you have every right not to like me, I have abused my power but now I'm here on your turf. What I need to say, what I need to say is, I saw what your mother was doing, I saw how neglected you were, I saw her drive your father off and I spent a lot of time beating myself up about that, but what does that do for you, nothing, nothing. I wasn't your advocate, I didn't fight for you, I never stood up for you. I let myself off the hook, I told myself I was young and didn't know any better, but I did know better, I wasn't much younger than you are now. I should've fought for you Meredith, like you fought for that child today. I told myself that I wasn't your father, that it wasn't my responsibility, that I was right not to but in, I let myself off the hook. You were helpless, you were a baby. A beautiful, smart, funny, little girl, and no one stood up for you. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry.

Webber

We'll be out of here in plenty of time for the wedding.

Good. Then she won't have any excuses.

Excuse me?

This is the second time I've been Derek's best man. I have to come up with a toast, offer some words of wisdom. It's a lot of work. I don't want to have to be his best man a third time if you know what I mean.

So you came in here to threaten me?

I'm his best man. That's my job.

He wrote in my hand

LBLexie, Bailey, Hunt, Cristina, Shepherd, Sloan, Callie, Webber

What do you mean he wrote in your hand?

He just grabbed my hand, and he squeezed it and he wrote with his finger.

He wrote with his finger?

You know in my hand, he wrote 007.

[grabs Meredith's hand and proceeds to write on it using her finger] Okay, what did I write?

Joe?

N! I did not write JOE!

Are you serious!

Webber

You mean this might not be O'Malley?

This is funny.

Webber

Did anybody try to phone O'Malleyf? Can we get him on the phone?

[Everybody retrieves their cell phones and start calling]

I'm telling you he squeezed my hand.

[hushes Meredith] Shut it! You don't get to talk anymore! You don't get to talk ever again!

I could have sworn it was George.

[voiceover] Grief may be a thing we all have in common, but it looks different on everyone.

It isn't just death we have to grieve. It's life. It's loss. It's change.

And when we wonder why it has to suck so much sometimes, has to hurt so bad. The thing we gotta try to remember is that it can turn on a dime.

That's how you stay alive. When it hurts so much you can't breathe, that's how you survive.

By remembering that one day, somehow, impossibly, you won't feel this way. It won't hurt this much.

Grief comes in its own time for everyone, in its own way.

So the best we can do, the best anyone can do, is try for honesty.

The really crappy thing, the very worst part of grief is that you can't control it.

The best we can do is try to let ourselves feel it when it comes.

And let it go when we can.

The very worst part is that the minute you think you're past it, it starts all over again.

And always, every time, it takes your breath away.

There are five stages of grief. They look different on all of us, but there are always five.

Denial.

Anger.

Bargaining.

Depression.

Webber

Acceptance.

No, no, whoa whoa whoa whoa!

Webber

Move!

No!

Webber

Dr. Robbins!

I said no! Dr. Shepherd is operating on the inside of a man's spinal chord right now. Even the most minor disturbance could cause him to make a mistake on that patient - a patient who happens to work here, and whose life I personally would like to see Dr. Shepherd save. So no... you don't get to go in there and be a bully. Not today chief, not on my watch.

Webber

Maybe I can help.

No, no you can't. Because as long as you're standing there breathing over my shoulder, I feel like I'm operating on a stack of dollar bills, 25 million dollar bills, and what I need to be invested in right now is this kid, so please, get the hell out of my O.R..

You missed it. Altman tore Hunt a new one in the cafeteria. Whole hospital's talking about it.

Webber

Not to me. I walk in a room, and all the conversation grinds to a halt.

Oh come on, you don't talk locker room talk in front of the coach.

Webber

I'm not a coach anymore, I'm a player. I take a shower like everybody else.

Richard. You're a little bit like everybody else, but mostly, you're still the coach. It's a sign of respect. You'd be wrong to take it any other way.

Richard

If I wasn't happily married, I'd hit her, I'd hit her hard.

Sir, I think you wanted to say was, "I'd hit that".

I don't think you wanted to say that - at all.

I'm gonna find a cure for Alzheimer's.

Webber

The cure for Alzheimer's... With $1 million?

With $1 million. It's a start.

Webber

You're talking about a clinical trial. A clinical-surgical trial?

Yes.

Webber

Start-up costs alone, never mind the FDA, Derek, it's...

Today I watched Meredith perform an emergency craniotomy by herself. She was perfect. She's got her mother's talent. She's got her mother's looks, Richard. What if she has her mother's disease? Ellis was young when it started. Every time Meredith forgets her keys or asks what day of the week it is, I... When that $1 million runs out, investors are gonna throw money my way for the same reason I am gonna throw everything I got at this trial - because their dad has it or their wife. Breakthroughs don't happen because of the medicine. Real breakthroughs happen because someone is scared to death to stop trying.

Why do we so many post-op fistulas after pancreas surgeries? I mean, your operation is flawless. It doesn't matter. We still see fistulas in what? 20 percent of patients? I- I think there's a way to bring that number down. I just gotta find it.

Webber

Miranda...

I needed a win, sir. I've got a string of big losses and I could use a win, that's all. Yang... Yang was the one I didn't have to worry about.

Webber

I know. I know. Look into the pancreatectmy patients, figure it out and then let me know how I can help.

Uh, can I use Avery? He actually gave me the idea. He was great today.

Webber

That's good to know. You know, Alex Karev saved a baby's life with a ping pong ball?

A ping pong ball?

Webber

Yes, he did.

Hmm. Alex Karev.

You need to pick chief resident already. I mean, Alex Karev is living in a trailer in the hospital parking lot. Residents are waiting for you outside bathrooms...

Webber

Karev's living in the parking lot?

Y'know, your trial is up and running, and you've got things to deal with at home. You don't need to be picking a new chief resident, too. Let somebody else handle that. Delegate.

Webber

Okay, I'd like you to.

No. I raised those babies. What I mean is, delegate to someone else... who is not me.

You know Sam's wife took care of him after his last two surgeries, she died of a stroke last year. His son Jason dropped out of college one semester before graduating and he was--

What the hell, Kepner. Why are you telling me this?

Talking to patients is your job, Alex. Because they're more than just... an easy A or something that you can win. It's your job.

No, it's not. Not anymore. My job is to open him up and to fix him. And if I can't do it, no one's gonna do it for me. It's on me. So I can spend time talking to him or I can use that time figuring out what I'm gonna do after I open him up. Which one do you want me to do?

You're really nervous. That's why you didn't wanna work on a kid today. Look, you'll be fine. You're ready. I mean, you feel ready, right? [Alex nods]

Webber

I am thoroughly enjoying this book, Karev.

That's great.

Webber

Hopefully I'll finish it in there. Because as long as I'm reading it means that you're not screwing up. Will I finish this book today?

Yes, sir.

[voiceover] There are distinct differences, between male and female brains.

Webber

[voiceover] Female brains have a larger hippocampus...which usually makes them better at retention and memory.

[voiceover] Male brains have a bigger parietal cortex, which helps when fending off an attack.

[voiceover] Male brains confront challenges differently than female brains.

[voiceover] Women are hardwired to communicate with language. Detail. Empathy. Men, not so much.

[voiceover] It doesn't mean we're any less capable of emotion.

[voiceover] We can talk about our feelings. It's just that, most of the time, we'd really rather not.

[voiceover] People say 'be a man.' People say it all the time.

[voiceover] But what does that even mean?

Webber

[voiceover] Is it about strength?

[voiceover] Is it about sacrifice?

[voiceover] Is it about winning?

[voiceover] Maybe it's simpler than that.

[voiceover] You have to know when not to man up. Sometimes it takes a real man to set his ego aside, admit defeat, and simply start all over again.
