I would think that you of all people-- This hospital's first female chief of surgery-- Would fight for a woman to get paid at least as much as any man.
I do, and don't ever suggest to me that I do not stand in sisterhood with other women in this hospital. You've never been 4'11" tall and overlooked and called 'girl' by your male colleagues. You don't know. I am woman. Hear me roar. But I've already mentored Grey. I've already taught her what she needs to know. And now that I'm chief of this hospital, it's not my fault if she's not used the skills that I taught her. And it's not my job to be giving away money when it's not asked for. You have coddled her. Y--Y-- Since Derek, you have coddled her, and I won't do that. No, she needs to rise. And she needs to rise on her own so she knows she can rise on her own. Because... You may not be here the next time she falls. She needs to fight for herself.
I don't want to go home, alone. I miss Penny. I miss having sex. Ugh. Penny and I had the greatest sex. It was that "journey of discovery" great sex you have in the beginning.
Katie Bryce. Day one of my internship, mystery seizures. Cristina and I solved it, Derek operated. It was my first surgery, Bailey. How do you not remember this?
Bailey
You were an intern, Grey. You weren't even a person to me yet... (she looks Katie) Oh, Katie Bryce! When Derek had all the interns chasing their tail for the answer...
Oh, it'll work. Major Thorpe, your Chief asked for our help because he knows we're the best. Now, you called us the Dream Team, and that's exactly what we are. We are miracle workers. Now, the sooner you recognize that, the sooner we can get to the business of saving a life, which is all any of us are here to do, yourself included.
I can't in good conscience let you perform surgery in this hospital right now. You're a good doctor! You're compassionate. And you're good with people. You're exactly what we need right now in the clinic. A little mole told me they're short-staffed.
I didn't promise the impossible. Yeah, I overstepped, and I'm overstepping again and pissing you off, and I don't care. Go on, get mad at me, but don't take it out on the patient. Just give her a freaking chance.
Bailey
When I tell you to know your place, know your damn place.
I already have an expiration date. Aren't we past a little worried about some risks?
Miranda
If we did this, if we could remove the tumor and keep your pregnancy intact, by the time you deliver, the cancer will have still grown unchecked for six months. It'd be too far along by then for us to treat it. I mean, you would literally be sacrificing your own life for your child's.
VVeronica
I can see it, you know.
Miranda
See what?
VVeronica
Jeremy pushing our kid in the swing, touching his toes when they're in the sky. And the baby thinks it's so funny. I can see them growing older together, getting to the good stuff. Jeremy showing him "Star Wars" for the first time. "Episode IV," 'cause you can't start anywhere else. High school, college, his first apartment. Jeremy's there, and he's the best dad. I picture that, and all this crap is for something. A happy ending. I die, but there's something good still. There's something good to see. I picture it your way, and everything goes black. There's nothing. Only death. If this is the only chance that my baby has to survive, I am not looking for a guarantee. I'm looking for a chance.
I made a decision about what is best for the hospital moving forward, and I didn't want my personal feelings, my very strong personal feelings to get in the way of that decision. If I do that, I won't be able to do this job.
Bailey, we reach into people's bodies and hold their lives and their futures in our hands. There's nothing more personal than this job, in how we treat a patient, in how we raise our doctors and teach them how to do this work. Every decision that you make should be a personal one. If it isn't, then you have no business being chief.
And I'd be trapped on the inside. No one knows me, no one trusts me. My record says that I'm in for theft or worse. So who's gonna listen to me when I'm yelling that there's been some horrible mix-up? Nobody. Nobody listens. I never get my hair done. My teeth go bad. I die in here.
I don’t want to stuff my feet into these shoes. When Webber became chief, he did not have to fiddle around on sticks all day. When Hunt became chief, he did not have to squeeze five toes into a space built for two. But I became chief and I can’t wear my perfectly comfortable surgical clogs anymore. Any you know why?
[voice over] As surgeons, we try to eliminate pain. As humans, we just try like hell to avoid it. When we can’t avoid pain, we try to understand it… with pithy little quotes that we can wrap our head around… like “Suffering is optional,” or “Time heals all wounds,” and my personal favorite, “Every pain has a purpose.” God, I hope that one’s true.
