I don't know how you get up in the morning, I honestly don't. Our dad abandoned you. And your mom by all accounts was the meanest person ever and you can't let Derek love you and it all really, really sucks. But ever since I knew you existed I had this fantasy about my big sister and you have failed, on every occasion to live up to that fantasy. But I still love you, whether you are capable of letting me or not. So, I forgive you. [storms out of bathroom]
[comes out of bathroom stall] Two o'clock work for you?
Meredith
Yeah... okay.
Was your life not working when you let that slip out from under you?
Meredith
Okay, when are you going to stop suggesting that I'm suicidal?
When you start acting like somebody that wants to be alive.
Meredith
Give me my chart.
Meredith
Because I'm not suicidal, and if it says that, then it's wrong.
What happened last year when you fell in the water?
Meredith
I almost drowned. Do you think I did that for kicks?
You put your hand in a body cavity that contained unexploded ordinance.
Meredith
I was trying to save a patient!
Why is it that every other person in that room had the sense to hit the deck? You know, people run away from this line between life and death. You seem to stand on it and wait for a strong wind to sway you one way or the other. You're careless with your life. You're not slitting your wrists, but you're careless. Probably because your mother told you you were a waste of space on this planet. The problem is you believed her. And if you don't watch out, one of these days you're going to die because of it.
Meredith
Hand me my chart. Now! And don't ever talk about my mother again.
[Meredith has created the outline of a house out of candles]
Meredith
Stupid, corny, idiotic, I cannot believe I did this. Stupid, loser, son of a... I could be at home instead of, ugh, stupid brain man...
Meredith
Where have you been?! I've been waiting and waiting for you! And I did this stupid, embarrassing, humiliating, corny thing. And I was just gonna tell you that, this over here is our kitchen, and this is our living room, and over there that's the room where our kids could play. I had this whole thing about I was gonna build us a house, but I don't build houses because I'm a surgeon! And now I'm here feeling like a lame ass loser. I got all whole and healed and you don't show up. And now it's all ruined because you took so long to come home! And I couldn't even find that bottle of champagne.
[Derek holds up the bottle, shows it to her and smiles]
This the kitchen? Living room? - a little small. I think the view's much better from here. And that's the room where the kids are going to play? Where's our bedroom?
Meredith
I'm still mad at you and I don't know if I trust you, I wanna trust you, but I don't know if I do. So I'm just gonna try, I'm gonna try and trust you. Because I believe that, we can be extraordinary together rather than ordinary apart and I wanna be... [They kiss]
Meredith
What?
In order to kiss you the way I wanna kiss you, and in order to do more than kiss you, I need to speak to Rose. I want my conscience clear so I can do more than kiss you. Stay here, don't move, wait for me.
Mer, why do you care what I think?
Meredith
Because you're my person. And if I'm gonna do this with him - be whole and healthy and be a warm, gooey person who lives with a boy, I need you. I need you on board. I need you to cheer me on. Because you're the only one who... knows me, darkly, really knows me. I need you to pretend that I can do this, even if you don't believe. Because if you abandon me now, I will never make it, and I'll never get my happy ending, and then that's just––
Meredith
I'm saying please here.
I think you and Derek will make it. You'll make it work.
You can see the remaining tumors easily identified here.
Meredith
Her liver looks so healthy.
That's the beauty of general surgery. See badness surrounded by goodness. Cut out the badness, all's right with the world. It's just you and your scalpel, one on one, mano a mano.
Meredith
[to her shrink in the elevator] What was the point? All those hours and all that money? What's the point? The world is a horrible place. Young people die of diseases. It makes absolutely no sense to try to be happy in a world that's such a horrible place.
Meredith
What?
Yes, horrible things do happen. Happiness in the face of all of that, that's not the goal. Feeling the horrible and knowing that you're not gonna die from those feelings, that's the point. [she stops the elevator] And you're not done. You've made progress because you're feeling and you're telling me about it. Six months ago, it would have been just you and a bottle of tequila. My door is always open.
Meredith
I don't even want the credit, but the clinical trial was my idea. And I had to beg him to do it. More than once.
It's okay you want the credit. I would want the credit.
When you screw the attendings, you get screwed. They have all the power.
Interns. You could screw interns. [everyone looks at her] I mean.... date. Residents could date interns, 'cause we're nonthreatening. I read this study once that said that interns hardly ever file sexual harassment claims because we feel so weak and powerless in the hospital environment, so that's good.
Interns. The other white meat.
[Cristina climbs into Derek and Meredith's bed, waking an unhappy Derek]
[to Meredith] The wicked witch is dead.
Meredith
Metaphorically dead or dead dead?
Who are we talking about?
MCMeredith and Cristina
Hahn.
Her name is off the surgical board. Her surgeries have been canceled. I don't know how or why, but I do know Hahn is gone.
That's too bad. She was really talented. [Meredith and Cristina glare at Derek] You're not talking to me. [gets out of bed and leaves]
She said a thing about babies. Like babies are a totally ordinary idea. She's not afraid, she's ready.
When are you gonna do it?
No kidding? Outstanding! How're you gonna do it?
I don't know. Just decided.
Congratulations, that's a big step.
Thank you very much. [to Mark] You just gonna tell everybody now?
You need advice. Hunt, you ever proposed before?
Uh sorry I'm... not the guy to ask. When are you gonna do it?
[Meredith approaches]
Well more importantly how am I gonna do it?
:[sees Meredith, coughs] So, what do you use, like a twist drill for that?
[Webber leaves]
Well not if you don't want a partial, pridal hematoma!
[Derek, Mark and Owen do big fake laugh]
Meredith
[confused] Hi... [walks away]
Meredith
Hey, um did you eat? Let me change, I'll come with you.
No, no, no, I can't. I have to um, work.
Meredith
Ok, listen. You have been acting like a basket case ever since I dropped that stupid little comment about babies. And I'm glad I dropped it, because if you don't want babies, or you don't want babies with me and my crappy DNA... just say so. You don't have to avoid me. You don't have to make up lame excuses about work.
Meredith, I want your crappy babies.
Meredith
Hah, you do?
Meredith
Ok, do you wanna eat?
No... I... I... I have to work.
[Derek, Meredith, Addison and Alex prep for surgery]
You're a good doctor. So am I. Let's just be good together.
Your guy and my guy work well together.
Meredith
Well, my guy works well with everyone.
