[On Lazarus' mutant form]
I still don't understand where that thing came from. Is it alien?
No, for once it's strictly human in origin.
Human?! How can it be human?!
Probably from dormant genes in Lazarus's DNA. The energy field in this thing must have reactivated them. And it looks like they're becoming dominant.
Some option that evolution rejected for you millions of years ago. But the potential is still there, locked away in your genes, forgotten about until Lazarus unlocked it by mistake.
Exactly. Nice shoes, by the way.
[The Doctor, Martha and Tish find Lazarus hiding in Wells Cathedral]
I came here before, a lifetime ago. I thought I was going to die then. In fact, I was sure of it. I sat here, just a child, the sound of planes and bombs outside...
[chuckles, then groans in agony as his bones crack and contort] In the morning, the fires had died, but I was still alive. I swore I'd never face death like that again. So... defenceless. I would arm myself, fight back, defeat it--
That's what you were trying to do today.
What about the other people who died?!
They were nothing. I changed the course of history.
Any of them might have done too. You think history's only made with equations?! Facing death is part of being human; you can't change that.
No, Doctor. Avoiding death, that's being human! It's our strongest impulse: to cling to life with every fibre of being! I'm only doing what everyone before me has tried to do. I've simply been more... successful. [groans as his bones crack again]
Look at yourself! You're mutating! You've got no control over it, and you call it a success?!
I call it progress! I'm more now than I was... more than just an ordinary human...
There's no such thing as an ordinary human.
You're so sentimental, Doctor. Maybe you are older than you look.
I'm old enough to know that a longer life isn't always a better one. In the end, you just get tired. Tired of the struggle, tired of losing everyone that matters to you, tired of watching everything turn to dust. If you live long enough, Lazarus, the only certainty left is that you'll end up alone.
That's a price worth paying.
[over the intercom] Doctor?
Who had the most number ones, Elvis or the Beatles? That's pre-download.
Elvis. No! The Beatles. No! Wait, um... um... awww, that remix... um... I don't know, I am a bit busy.
Fine, I'll ask someone else.
Now where was I?... Here comes the sun... No, resources.
JRJoan Redfern
It's all becoming clear. The Doctor is the man you'd like to be, doing impossible things with cricket balls.
Well, I discovered a talent, that's certainly true.
JRJoan Redfern
And The Doctor has an eye for the ladies...
JRJoan Redfern
A girl in every fireplace.
Ah now, there I have to protest Joan, that's hardly me.
JRJoan Redfern
Says the man dancing with me tonight!
[Rocastle and Mr. Phillips confront Baines (Son of Mine) and Jenny (Mother of Mine)]
HRHeadmaster Rocastle
You speak with someone else's voice, Baines. Who might that be?
We are the Family of Blood.
HRHeadmaster Rocastle
Mr. Smith said there had been deaths.
Yes, sir. And they were good, sir.
HRHeadmaster Rocastle
Well, I warn you, the school is armed.
All your little tin soldiers. But tell me, sir - will they thank you?
HRHeadmaster Rocastle
I don't understand.
What do you know of history, sir? What do you know of next year?
HRHeadmaster Rocastle
You're not making sense, Baines--
1914, sir. Because the Family has traveled far and wide looking for Mr. Smith and, oh, the things we have seen! War is coming. In foreign fields, war of the whole wide world, with all your boys falling down in the mud. Do you think they will thank the man who taught them it was glorious?
HRHeadmaster Rocastle
Don't you forget, boy. I've been a soldier. I was in South Africa. I used my dead mates for sandbags. I fought with the butt of my rifle when the bullets ran out, and I would go back there tomorrow for King and Country--
Et cetera, et cetera. [casually vaporizes Mr. Phillips] Run along, Headmaster, run back to school. And send us Mr. Smith!
[Mother of Mine laughs as Rocastle flees in terror]
All you have to do is open it and he's back.
You knew this all along, and yet you watched while Nurse Redfern and I--
I didn't know how to stop you! He gave me a list of things to watch out for, but that wasn't included.
Falling in love? That didn't even occur to him?
[teary-eyed] Then what sort of a man is that?! And now you expect me to die?!
It was always going to end, though! The Doctor said the Family's got a limited lifespan, and that's why they need to consume a Time Lord. Otherwise, three months and they die. Like mayflies, he said.
So your job was to execute me.
People are dying out there! They need him, and I need him! Because you've got no idea what he's like. I've only just met him, it wasn't even that long ago, but... he is everything. He's just everything to me, and he doesn't even look at me, but I don't care. Because I love him to bits. And I hope to God he won't remember me saying this.
[The Doctor/John Smith has gone onto the Family's spaceship, and is trying to give them the fob watch, in exchange for the village's safety.]
[startled by the spaceship] I don't care about this Doctor, or your family. I just want you to go! [hyperventilates] So, I've made my choice. [stretches out right arm: the fob watch is in his hand] You can have him. [beat] Just take it, please! [as Son of Mine approaches the fob watch] Take him away!
At last. [takes the fob watch and studies it. He suddenly lashes out with his right hand, gripping hold of Smith's lapel and dragging him up; menacingly] Don't think that saved your life! [pushes Smith away; Smith falls against the wall, knocking three switches down, turning them all on] Family of Mine... [the Family gathers around him; Smith looks terrified] ...now, we shall have the lives of a Time Lord.
[Son of Mine opens the watch, and each member of the Family inhales deeply through the nose. The yellow effects that indicate the Doctor's spirit presence does not occur. Mother of Mine's face wrinkles, and she realises something's wrong.]
[angrily] It's EMPTY! [closes the watch and glares at Smith]]
[nervously] Where's it gone?
[annoyed] You tell me! [throws the watch at Smith, who they all realise is now none other than the Doctor, having masked his identity from the Family by faking his John Smith persona. The Doctor drops the charade.]
[stands up] Oh, I think the explanation might be you've been fooled by a simple olfactory misdirection, a little bit like ventriloquism of the nose. It's an elementary trick in certain parts of the galaxy. [We hear a static-like sound and he moves to look at one of the ship's machines] But it has got to be said... [puts his glasses on and leans into the machine] I don't like the look of that hydrokinometer. [the Family looks at it] It seems to be indicating you've got energy feedback [gestures at the ceiling, where the Family looks] all the way through the retro-stabilisers feeding back [knocks a stone column twice] into the primary heat converter. [gives a patronising gasp, the Family glares at him] 'Cos if there's one thing you shouldn't have done, you shouldn't have let me press all those buttons. [backs to the spaceship's entrance] But, in fairness, I will give you one word of advice: [dangerously grinning] Run! [He turns and flees, red lights start flashing and noises start increasing in volume. The spaceship is obviously going to explode.]
[realises what the Doctor has done; alarmed] Get out! GET OUT! [leads his family out of the spaceship, and everybody gets clear before the spaceship explodes. Though nobody is hurt, everybody is knocked over by the fiery blast, before the Doctor rights himself and stands menacingly over the Family.]
[voice-over] He never raised his voice. That was the worst thing -- the fury of the Time Lord. And then we discovered why -- why this Doctor, who had fought with gods and demons, why he had run away from us and hidden: he was being kind.
[We see the fates of the Family as they're described]
He wrapped my father in unbreakable chains forged in the heart of a dwarf star. He tricked my mother into the event horizon of a collapsing galaxy to be imprisoned there, forever. He still visits my sister once a year, every year. I wonder if one day he might forgive her, but there she is. Can you see? He trapped her inside a mirror. Every mirror. If ever you look at your reflection and see something move behind you just for a second, that's her. That's always her. As for me, I was suspended in time and the Doctor put me to work standing over the fields of England, as their protector. We wanted to live forever. So the Doctor made sure we did.
