[annoyed that even with three people in the car, Brannigan and Valerie won't take him to the fast lane] So, we keep on driving.
BBrannigan
Till the journey's end.
[snatches up the communicator; into handset] Mrs Cassini, this is the Doctor. Tell me, how long have you been driving on the motorway?
C1Cassini #1 (driving)
Oh, we were amongst the first. It's been twenty-three years now.
And in all that time, have you ever seen a police car? [looks menacingly at Brannigan and Valerie as they look at him worriedly. Cassini #1 also looks worried]
C2Cassini #2 (not driving)
[pause] IIII'm...not sure.
Look at your notes. Any police? [Brannigan and Valerie look at each other again, worriedly.]
C2Cassini #2
Er...not as such.
Or an ambulance? Rescue service? Anything official? [Menacingly] Ever?
C2Cassini #2
I can't keep a note of everything!
What if there's no one out there?
BBrannigan
[seeing that the Doctor has overstepped the mark; snatches the handset out of the Doctor's hand] Stop it! The Cassinis were doing you a favour! [puts the handset back in its slot]
[darkly] Someone's got to ask, 'cause you might not talk about it, but it's there, in your eyes. What if the traffic jam never stops?
BBrannigan
There's a whole city above us, the mighty city stayed up. New New York, they wouldn't just leave us.
[frustrated] In that case, where are they? [looks out the window, then back at Brannigan, who seems to accept defeat] Hmm? [getting darker with every sentence] What if there's no help coming, not ever? What if there's nothing? Just the motorway, and the cars, going round, and round, and round, and round, never stopping, FOREVER?!
The Macra used to be the scourge of this galaxy. Gas - they fed off gas, the filthier the better. They built up a small empire, using humans as slaves and mining gas for food.
BBusinessman
They don't exactly look like empire builders to me.
Well, that was billions of years ago, billions. They must have devolved down the years, now they're just beasts. But they're still hungry, and my friend's down there.
FBThe Face of Boe
Everything has its time. You know that, old friend, better than most.
HHame
The legend says more.
Don't, there's no need for that.
HHame
It says that the Face of Boe will speak his final secret to a traveler.
Yeah, but not yet; who needs secrets, eh?
FBThe Face of Boe
I have seen so much, perhaps too much. I am the last of my kind, as you are the last of yours, Doctor.
That's why we have to survive, both of us. Don't go.
FBThe Face of Boe
I must. But know this, Time Lord: You are not alone. [He dies.]
He said, "last of your kind". What does that mean?
It really doesn't matter.
You don't talk. You never say! Why not?
[The whole city starts to sing "Abide With Me"]
It's the city. They're singing.
I lied to you, 'cos I liked it. I could pretend, just for a bit, I could imagine they were still alive... underneath that burnt orange sky. I'm not just a Time Lord, I'm the last of the Time Lords. The Face of Boe was wrong. There's no one else.
There was a war. A Time War. The Last Great Time War. My people fought a race called the Daleks... for the sake of all creation. And they lost. We lost. Everyone lost. They're all gone now. My family. My friends. Even that sky. [reminiscent] Oh, you should have seen it, that old planet! The second sun would rise in the south, and the mountains would shine. The leaves on the trees were silver. When they caught the light, every morning it looked like a forest on fire. When the Autumn came, a brilliant glow through the branches...
So these, uh, these new bosses. What's their names?
DMr. Diagoras
I think you could say they're from out of town.
DMr. Diagoras
A bit further than that.
DMr. Diagoras
Beyond your imagination.
Aw what's that supposed to mean? Who are they? Mr. Diagoras, who are we working for?
DMr. Diagoras
Behold your masters. [the lift doors open to reveal Dalek Caan]
TTallulah
Hey, you're lucky though. Got yourself a forward thinking guy with that hot potato in the sharp suit.
Oh, he's not... We're not... together.
TTallulah
Sure you are! I've seen the way you look at him, it's obvious.
TTallulah
Oh, I should have realized. He's into musical theatre.
Alright, so what have you achieved, then? Eh? With this "Final Experiment"? NOTHING! 'Cos I can show you what you're missing, with this thing! Simple little radio!
DJDalek Jast
What is the purpose of that device?
Well, exactly, it plays music, what's the point of that? But with music, you can dance to it. Sing with it. Fall in love to it. Unless you're a Dalek, of course... then it's all just noise!
Removing the emotions makes you stronger. That's what your creator thought, all those years ago.
It makes us lesser than our enemies. We must return to the flesh, and also the heart.
Then you wouldn't be the supreme beings anymore.
Then our purpose is wrong! Where has our quest for supremacy led us? To this! Hiding in the sewers on a primitive world, just four of us left. If we do not change now, then we deserve extinction.
So you want to change everything that makes a Dalek a Dalek.
TTallulah
[her lover, Laszlo, is dying] Doctor, can't you do something?
Oh, Tallulah with three Ls and an H... just you watch me. What do I need? Oh, I dunno, how about a great big genetic laboratory? (big grin) Oh, look, I've got one. [he gathers equipment.] Lazlo, just you hold on! There have been too many deaths today, way too many people have died. Brand new creatures and wise old men and age-old enemies. And I'm telling you, I'm telling you right now, I am not having one more death! You got that? Not one! Tallulah, out of the way! The Doctor is in!
I find that nothing's ever exactly like you expect. There's always something to surprise you. "Between the idea and the reality, between the motion and the act--"
: So the mysterious Doctor knows his Eliot. I'm impressed.
I wouldn't have thought you had time for poetry, Lazarus, what with you being busy defying the laws of nature and all.
You're right, Doctor. One lifetime's been too short for me to do everything I'd like. How much more I'll get done in two or three or four.
It doesn't work like that. Some people live more in twenty years than others do in eighty. It's not the time that matters, it's the person.
But if it's the right person, what a gift that would be.
Or what a curse. Look at what you've done to yourself.
