Astor Bennett quotes from Dexter

[To Masuka] Are you the one my mom told me not to talk to?

I wish that it was just my mom and me and Cody and Harrison, because we all would have been better off if she'd never met you!

You come along and become a part of the family and we thought everything was going to be good forever. You made us think that! And it's not true; things got worse.

Gail

And I see a young man who is not eating.

Cody

I'm not hungry.

He's scared the Butcher's gonna get him.

Dexter

Remember, he only gets bad people.

Cody

I was bad today. I threw a ball at Tommy Albertez.

Dexter

Well, that's not too bad. And even if it was, the Bay Harbor Butcher doesn't hurt kids.

Cody

He doesn't?

Dexter

Nah. You're safe.

Rita

When are they gonna hurry up and catch this guy?

Dexter

They're working as hard as they can.

Gail

Well, if what I've heard is true, that he only goes after criminals, I say leave him alone. He's got my seal of approval.

Dexter

[thoughts] Perhaps I have misjudged you, oh wise one.

Rita

Dexter and I have something we want to talk to you about.

What?

Dexter

We're having a baby.

Rita

Um... You're gonna have a new little brother or little sister to play with.

Cody

Which one?

Rita

Which one would you like?

Cody

A puppy.

Dexter

You can have a puppy and a baby.

Rita

Dexter, what is it?

Dexter

My life has always felt like an unanswered question. A string of days and nights, waiting for something to happen, but I didn't know what.

Cody

Why is he acting so weird?

I don't know.

Dexter

Rita, we're connected. Wherever I am, I feel you and the kids with me. You're what makes me real. I want us to always go out for banana splits. And replant the lemon tree that keeps dying. And I never, ever want to miss a pizza night. And that's how I know I want to marry you. Because something as simple as pizza night's the highlight of my week. But not without the kids. [leans down by Cody and Astor] Cody, Astor, you guys are my family. I'm gonna hang on to you for dear life. Please, say yes.

Rita

Yes! Yes, we will marry you!

Harrison. He doesn't even recognize me.

Dexter

Well you didn't look like a raccoon the last time he saw you.

Debra

You gonna introduce us?

That's the one I was telling you about - his new girlfriend.

Dexter

She's my tenant. Lumen, this is my sister Debra. Deb, Lumen.

Debra

I didn't know he had a tenant.

Lumen

Didn't know he had a sister. I'm gonna...go check on the girls.

Debra

Seriously? That's your tenant?

Dexter

Yes.

Debra

Where's all her stuff?

Dexter

She hasn't really moved in yet.

Debra

But you know her well enough to trust her with your son.

Dexter

It was an emergency. I thought the girls had been taken.

Debra

Why are you keeping her a secret?

Dexter

I'm not.

Debra

Really? Cos at the station we asked you who you were spending your time with. You didn't think to mention the hot blonde that's living in your house?

Dexter

Didn't seem...like it mattered. Obviously she didn't take the girls.

Debra

That's not the point. I'm not judging you. Believe me - I understand rebound as much as anybody. But don't you think it's a little soon?

Dexter

I'm not on any rebound.

Debra

Come on. She's your tenant - really?

Dexter

There's nothing going on.

Debra

Fine. I give up.

I want you to know something. If Lumen's your girlfriend, I want you to tell me.

Dexter

OK. But she's not.

She's not just your tenant, though.

Dexter

She's a friend...who's been through some really...really bad stuff. I'm helping her deal with it.

Does it make you feel better?

Dexter

What do you mean?

About Mom. Being there for Lumen...does it make you feel better about what happened to Mom?

Where is she? Your tenant...who was staying at the house.

Dexter

She left.

I'm sorry. Did you do it? What you wanted to do? You said she needed your help. Did you help her?

Dexter

Yeah. I think I did.

And did it work? Did it make you feel better? About what happened to Mom?

Dexter

[Voiceover: You can't do one thing to make up for another. That's what Jordan Chase says. But he's wrong, because we do that all the time. That is the way the world works. We try to make things right. Even me.]
