AAnna
Master Liam, your father...
LLiam
He'll be off to church by now, repenting of his sins. And well he should. Closer, Anna!
AAnna
Why do ye keep to the shadows, sir? Are ye not well?
LLiam
The light... it bothers my eyes just now.
FFather
And I know the reason why! [kicks Liam out into the sunlight] Up again all night, is it? Drinking and whoring! I can smell the stink of it on you!
LLiam
And a 'good morning' to you, Father.
FFather
You're a disgrace.
LLiam
If you say so, Father.
FFather
Oh, I do. I do say so. Have you not had enough debauchery for one night? Must you corrupt the servants as well?
LLiam
'Servant,' Father. We have one servant. Anyway, everyone gets corrupted. But I find some forms of corruption are more pleasant... [rocks back as hard open-handed slap catches him full force]
FFather
I'm ashamed to call you my son. A lay-about and a scoundrel. You'll never amount to anything more than that.
[Liam silently wipes blood from the corner of his mouth.]
FFather
Liam! You'll do as I say.
LLiam
[To his sister.] Sweet Kathy. No tears. We'll meet again.
FFather
Defy me now, you won't. Not as long as I live.
LLiam
You'll want to move away from the door now, father.
FFather
Go through it, but don't ever expect to come back.
LLiam
As you wish, father. Always, just as you wish.
FFather
It's a son I wished for! A man! instead God gave me you! A terrible disappointment.
LLiam
Disappointment? A more dutiful son you couldn't have asked for. My whole life you've told me in word, in glance, what it is you required of me, and I've lived down to your every expectations, now haven't I?
LLiam
No. The madness is that I couldn't fail enough for you. But we'll fix that now, won't we?
FFather
I fear for you, lad.
LLiam
And is that the only thing you can find in your heart for me now, father?
FFather
Who'll take you in, huh? No one!
LLiam
I'll not lack for a place to sleep, I can tell you that. Out of my way.
FFather
I was never in your way, boy.
[Angel opens the door and storms out.]
FFather
If you'll go courting trouble, you're sure to find it!
[Liam's father looks as if he is about to cry and slams the door.]
Strange. Somehow you seemed taller when I was alive.
FFather
Lord, bind this demon now.
To think I ever let such a tiny, trembling thing make me feel the way you did.
FFather
[crosses himself] Deliver me under thy protection, Father.
You told me I wasn't a man. You told me I was nothing. And I believed you. You said I'd never amount to anything. You were wrong. [vamps] You see, Father. I have made something of myself after all.
