When I asked you earlier if it hurt when you suffered your injury, I think you misunderstood me. Seems fairly obvious that when a person's back smashes into a hard surface after being thrown from a building, that that's going to sting a little. But I really wasn't asking about the physical pain.
John Locke
What, do you want to know if it hurt my feelings?
No, John. I wanted to know what it felt like when your own father tried to kill you.
[Ben leads Locke to where Anthony Cooper, his father, is tied up. The Others looks on]
[Hands Locke a knife] I know it won't be easy. But the quicker the better.
[After Ben ungags him] You're kidding me, right? You expect him to kill me?
John, the hesitation you're feeling is just the part of you that still feels that he has a perfectly good explanation for stealing your kidney. Throwing you out of an eight-story window. Don't you wanna be free from him?
The hesitation he's feeling is because he is a spineless--
Locke
[Growing anxious] Shut up! I, I've gotta think...
You're wasting your time, bug-eye. Me and him have been through all of this. All he wants is his daddy.
Locke
Shut up! I SAID SHUT UP!
Locke
Why are you doing this to me?
You're doing this to yourself. As long as he's still breathing, you will still be that same sad, pathetic little man who was kicked off of his walkabout tour because you couldn't walk!
[Flaring with anger, Locke presses his knife to Cooper's throat. Just as he is about to kill him, he turns away, humiliated]
[Mocking] I'll be here the rest of the week, John, if you change your mind.
[Ben spins and hits Cooper across the face with his cane, knocking him out. He then takes Locke's knife away and addresses The Others]
I'm sorry. He's not who we thought he was.
Ben knew you weren't gonna kill your own father. He put you in front of everyone in our camp just so they could all watch you fail.
John Locke
Why?
Cause when word got back here that there was a man with a broken spine on the plane who could suddenly walk again, well, people here began to get very excited because that, that could only happen to someone who was extremely special. But Ben doesn't want anyone to think you're special, John.
John Locke
And why are you telling me this?
Ben has been wasting our time with novelties like fertility problems. We're looking for someone to remind us that we're here for more important reasons.
John Locke
What do you want from me?
I want for you to find your purpose. And to do that, your father has to go, John. And since you're not gonna do it, I'm gonna suggest someone else.
We're here. You'll want to turn off your flashlight, John.
Locke
Why?
Jacob feels the same way about technology as you do. Once I open this door, there's no turning back. Are you sure this is what you want? So be it. Jacob, I'm here with John Locke. We're coming in now. Jacob, this is John. Don't you going to say hello, John?
Locke
What?
Locke
Who? What are you talking about?
Locke
See who?
Jacob. He's sitting right here in this chair. Yes, I know, but he insisted.
Locke
What is this?
You wanted the secrets of the island, well here they are. This is the man who can answer every single... I am not! He made me bring him here! Did you think that that was my... Sir, may I finish?!
Locke
You're crazy.
Locke
You don't know anything about the island, do you? You just made it all up.
Jacob, please, I can't hear him if you're going to talk...
Locke
Stop... Stop... Shut up! You're putting on a show for me! Or, do you... Do you really think there is someone there?
I know there is someone there.
Locke
You don't know anything.
I'm sorry you feel that way, John. And I'm sorry that you're too limited to see.
Locke
You're pathetic.
Locke
What did you just say?
Locke
Oh yes you did. I heard you. You said...
That's enough, you've had your fun!
Locke
What was that?
What did you hear in there, John? What did Jacob say to you?
Locke
He didn't say anything to me. You did.
What are you talking about?
Locke
There is no Jacob, Ben. I'm not going to be taken in by the little show you put on last night. You're a fraud. And it's time your people were told the truth. And this is not the way we came!
I'm taking us back another way. I wanted to show you something first.
Locke
I've seen enough.
You know, John, you're not wrong. Some of the things I've told you, some of the things I've told everyone, are not true.
Locke
Like what?
Well, for starters, I wasn't born on this island.
Locke
Then where did you come from?
That's what I want to show you.
This is where I came from, John. These are my people. The DHARMA Initiative. They came here seeking harmony, but they couldn't even coexist with the Island's original inhabitants. And when it became clear that one side had to go, one side had to be purged, I did what I had to do. I was one of the people that was smart enough to make sure that I didn't end up in that ditch, which makes me considerably smarter than you, John.
[Ben shoots Locke and he falls in the mass grave]
What did Jacob say to you?
Locke
Why did you do this?
Because you heard him. Now I need to know what he said.
Locke
"Help me."
John, I'm not going to ask you again! What did he say to you?
Locke
He said... "help me."
[Ben looks troubled, and flinches for a moment]
Well I certainly hope he helps you, John.
[Locke has just killed Naomi]
Jack: JOHN!
Locke
[Aims his gun at Jack] Step back, Jack.
Locke
What I had to. Now step back.
[The phone rings, Jack and Locke look at it]
Locke
Stay away from the phone.
[Jack runs and grabs the phone as Locke tries to shoot it]
What are you doing, John?
Locke
I don't wanna shoot you.
Do it, John! Shoot him! Do what you need to do-
[Ben is silenced as Rousseau knocks him out]
Locke
Please. Put the phone down.
No. You're done keeping me on this island.
Locke
[Thumbs back the hammer] I will kill you if I have to.
[Locke hesitates then lowers the gun]
Locke
[Sadly] Jack, you're not supposed to do this.
[Locke leaves as Jack answers the phone]
[Upon seeing Locke, Jack immediately attacks him, beating him to the ground. Locke goes for his gun, but Jack grabs it away and aims it him. The group looks on, shocked.]
Locke
You won't shoot me, Jack. Anymore than I was gonna-[Is cut off when Jack pulls the trigger. But nothing happens.]
Locke
[Amazed] It's not loaded...
[Jack begins to continue beating Locke before he is pulled off by Sawyer and Sayid]
Let go of me![To Sayid] Do you know what he did?!
Locke
All I did, all I have ever done, has been in the best interests of all of us.
Locke
I know I have a lot of explaining to do. But I never did anything to hurt any of you. I even risked my life to tell you there was a traitor in your midst.[Points at Juliet]
She helped us, John. All you ever did was blow up every chance we've had of getting off of this Island! You killed Naomi.
Well, technically, he didn't kill her. Yet.
[Just arriving] Yes he did. She just died. She didn't give you up, John. She covered for us, and she fixed this.[Hands Jack the phone] They're on their way.
Locke
She didn't cover for anyone. She wants her people to come here. And trust me, when they do we had all better be far away from here. I'm going to the Barracks. The Others abandoned them. It's the only place on the Island with any form of security, so it'll have to do until I can think of something else. Until then, if you wanna live, you need to come with me.
No one's going anywhere with you, John. Because they're not crazy.
[teary eyed] He's not crazy! What about Charlie? Charlie went down to that place so we could all be rescued. And whatever he did down there, it worked. But then something must have happened. He must have heard something before he...[Becomes overwhelemed with emotion] I don't know why, but he changed his mind. Because the last thing he did was warn us that the people on that boat are not who they said they were. So I'm not listening to you! I'm listening to my friend. I'm listening to Charlie.
Locke
Let's go.
Why are you going East? Thought you said the Barracks were due South.
Locke
Because, James, we have to make a little detour first.
Locke
There's a cabin I have to go to.
I think the cabin was back that way.
Locke
What did you say Hugo?
I er, thought you were talking about the airplane cabin.
(Locke stares at Hurley. So does Ben)
What the hell do you mean you saw Walt? In a dream?
Locke
No dream, it was Walt. Only, taller.
Taller? What like a giant? OK, what exactly did Walt tell you?
Locke
He said I had work to do. That I had to stop this woman, Naomi, from bringing the rest of her people here.
What you didn't ask any follow-up questions?
Locke
Ben had shot me and left me for dead, Walt saved my life, so I pretty much took him at his word.
He shot you? Yet here you are fit as a fiddle tromping through the jungle.
(Locke shows Sawyer his wound)
[Locke is about to execute Ben]
John, listen. I have information that you need. I have answers.
Locke
What is the monster?
Locke
The black smoke, the monster! What is it?
[Locke loads his gun]
Locke
Goodbye, Benjamin.
Her name is Charlotte Lewis! [Charlotte looks shocked] Charlotte Staples Lewis. Born July 2, 1979, Essex, England. Parents David and Jeanette. Eldest of three, all girls. She was raised in Bromsgrove. Did her undergraduate studies at Kent. Took her PhD in cultural anthropology at Oxford. She's here with two other team members and a pilot. Their names are Daniel Faraday, Miles Straume, Frank Lapidus. [Charlotte continues to look shocked] Your instinct was right, John. These people are a threat.
James. Look at yourself. Yes, on this Island you're brave, daring, handsome, you're someone, but if you left with them, back in the real-world a low-life scam artist like you could never compete with a first class surgeon. I think Kate was really upset when you made your choice to come with us. Thank god she has Jack there to comfort-
[Sawyer attacks Ben]
John Locke
James! Don't!
JFJames "Sawyer" Ford
Don't what!? Anyone wanna tell me why we're keeping this guy alive?
John Locke
We're keeping him alive because he's been on this Island a lot longer than any of us. Because he has information we need. And because apart from his mouth, he's completely harmless.
JFJames "Sawyer" Ford
His mouth put that hole in your gut?
John Locke
Okay, James. Let's execute him, right here, right now, in front of his daughter.
JFJames "Sawyer" Ford
It's only a matter of time before he gets us, Johnny. And I bet he's already figured out how he's gonna do it.
(to Ben): You ready to give us the name, Gizmo?
Locke
He's not going to tell you who his spy is on their boat, James.
Locke
Because that's the only thing keeping him alive.
Well here's an idea: why don't we take a gun, point it to his big toe and send that little piggy to the market.[Ben looks slightly amused.]
(continues) And if he still doesn't want to tell us, move on to the roast beef. Why don't we do that?
Locke
Because then we'd have to carry him.
John Locke
You may think this is a democracy, Kate, because of the way Jack ran things, but this is not a democracy.
Then I guess that makes it a dictatorship.
John Locke
If I was a dictator, I would just shoot you, and go about my day. Dinner's at six if you're hungry.
