Jacob[about his tapestry] You like it? I did it myself. It takes a very long time when you're making the thread, but, uh... I suppose that's the point, isn't it?
JacobJack is here because he has to do something. He can't be told what that is, he's got to find it himself. Sometimes you can just hop in the back of someone's cab and tell them what they are supposed to do. Other times you have to let them look at the ocean for a while.
Jacob[To Richard] Imagine that this wine is what you keep calling hell. There are other names for it. Malevolence. Evil. Darkness. And it's all down here swirling at the bottom. Unable to get out, because if it did it would spread. Now, the cork is this Island. [Puts a cork in the jug, trapping the wine] And it's the only thing keeping the darkness where it belongs.
We're here. You'll want to turn off your flashlight, John.
Why?
Jacob feels the same way about technology as you do. Once I open this door, there's no turning back. Are you sure this is what you want? So be it. Jacob, I'm here with John Locke. We're coming in now. Jacob, this is John. Don't you going to say hello, John?
What?
I told you he wouldn't.
Who? What are you talking about?
You can't see him?
See who?
Jacob. He's sitting right here in this chair. Yes, I know, but he insisted.
What is this?
You wanted the secrets of the island, well here they are. This is the man who can answer every single... I am not! He made me bring him here! Did you think that that was my... Sir, may I finish?!
You're crazy.
Excuse me?
You don't know anything about the island, do you? You just made it all up.
Jacob, please, I can't hear him if you're going to talk...
Stop... Stop... Shut up! You're putting on a show for me! Or, do you... Do you really think there is someone there?
I know there is someone there.
You don't know anything.
I'm sorry you feel that way, John. And I'm sorry that you're too limited to see.
You're pathetic.
JacobHelp me.
What did you just say?
I didn't say anything.
Oh yes you did. I heard you. You said...
That's enough, you've had your fun!
What was that?
That was Jacob.
[Jacob sits in a darkened room. He weaves something on a wooden wheel. He then heads outside and into the ocean to a fishing net and places the contents (a red herring) on a rock where he guts it and cooks it. He places it on a leaf to eat and sits back to watch as a wooden ship (presumably The Black Rock) approaches the island. The Man in Black approaches Jacob and sits in the sand next to him]
Morning.
JacobMorning.
Mind if I join you?
JacobPlease. You want some fish?
No thank you, I just ate.
JacobI take it you're here because of the ship.
I am. How did they find the island?
JacobYou'll have to ask them when they get here.
I don't have to ask: you brought them here. Still trying to prove me wrong, aren't you?
JacobYou are wrong.
Am I? They come. They fight. They destroy. They corrupt. It always ends the same.
JacobIt only ends once. Everything that comes before is just progress.
[Pause]
Do you have any idea how badly I want to kill you?
JacobYes.
One of these days, sooner or later, I'm going to find a loophole, my friend.
JacobWell when you do, I'll be right here.
Always nice talking to you Jacob.
JacobNice talking to you, too.
[The Man in Blackgets up ends heads off leaving Jacob alone on the beach. The camera pulls back to reveal that both men have been sat below the giant statue that is of a crocodile like figure]
[Flashback to Hurley being released from prison following the events of 'The Lie.' He exits the prison and heads out to a taxi opening the door]
Sorry, I didn't see it was taken, dude.
JacobActually, I'm only going a few blocks, if you want to share...?
Cool. You sure?
JacobCome on in.
[Hurley gets into the taxi and sits on the backseat next to Jacob. As the taxi starts to move off, Hurley opens a package of Fruit Roll-Ups and offers some of it to Jacob]
You want some? It's cherry.
JacobNo, thanks.
So what were you in for?
JacobExcuse me?
Jail? I was there because I shot three guys... well, I didn't really. I guess they figured it out. What about you?
JacobI wasn't in jail.
Then what were you doing sitting outside the prison in a cab?
JacobI was waiting for you, Hugo.
[Jacob smiles at Hurley, who looks unnerved]
Oh?! [Pause] Then you must be dead.
JacobI'm definitely not dead.
Then what do you want from me?
JacobI want to know why you won't go back to the island.
[Another long pause]
Because I am cursed.
JacobIs that so?
Uh-huh. That's why the plane crashed, my friends died: Libby, Charlie. And now they visit me and I can't make it stop.
JacobWhat if you weren't cursed? What if you were blessed?
How do you mean 'blessed'?
JacobWell you get to talk to the people you've lost, seems like a pretty wonderful thing to me.
Sure it's wonderful apart from the part where I'm crazy.
JacobI got some news for you, Hugo, and you're just going to have to take my word on this. You are not crazy.
[Hurley looks nervous and confused]
Who are you, dude?
I'm just up here on the left.
[The taxi stops. Jacob once again turns to Hurley]
JacobAjira Airways Flight 316 out of LAX leaves in 24 hours. All you have to do is be on that plane. It's your choice, Hugo. You don't have to do anything you don't want to.
[Jacob touches Hurley on the shoulder and exits the taxi leaving a guitar case next to Hurley]
Wait! You forgot your guitar!
[Jacob peers back into the taxi answers Hurley and then leaves]
JacobIt's not my guitar.
[Disguised as Locke] Hello, Jacob.
Jacob...Guess you found your loophole.
Indeed, I did. And you have no idea what I've gone through to be here.
You two know each other?
In a manner of speaking. Do what I asked you to, Benjamin.
JacobBenjamin, whatever he's told you, I want you to understand one thing: you have a choice.
What choice?
JacobYou can do what he asks, or you can go, leave us to discuss our... issues.
Oh... so now, after all this time... you've decided to stop ignoring me. Thirty-five years I lived on this island, and all I ever heard was your name, over and over. Richard would bring me your instructions, all those slips of paper, all those lists... and I never questioned anything. I did as I was told. But when I dared to ask to see you myself, I was told, "You have to wait. You have to be patient." But when he asks to see you, he gets marched up here as if he was Moses. So why him? Hmm? What was it that was so wrong with me? What about me?
Jacob[spitefully] What about you?
...Ah. Well... [He stabs Jacob twice in the chest and watches as he falls to the ground]
Jacob[Quietly] They're coming...
What? I can't hear ya.
JacobThey're coming!
[With this, The Man in Black looks alarmed. He then kicks Jacob into the fire and he and Ben watch him burn]
Dude, whoever you are you better come out now. I've got a gun and I know how to use it...
[Hurley attempts to cock the gun, while behind him the undergrowth russles. Hurley watches as Jacob appears infront of him]
JacobHey Hugo. You got a minute?
[Jacob and Hurley walk back to the Dharma Van where a dying Sayid is still lying on the ground. Jacob bends down and examines Sayid while Hurley looks on]
Where you going dude? Whats going on? Why are you here? I mean you show up in LA, in the back of a cab and tell me to get on that plane that just so happens to get me back to the island. How did you know that would happen?
[Jacob remains silent, still looking over Sayid]
Dude you better start taling 'cause my friend Jin is going to be back any minute and He'll...
Jacob : Your friend Jin won't be able to see me.
[Pause] Why not?
Jacob : Because I died an hour ago.
Sorry dude. That sucks.
Jacob : Thanks.
[Jacob stands and looks at Hurley]
You want me to do something crazy again don't you?
JacobNo. All I want you to do is save Sayid Hugo.
Well thats why I sent Jin to get Jack, so Jack can...
JacobJack cannot save him. You have to take Sayid to the temple, the rest of them should be safe there too.
The temple? Am I supposed to know where that is?
JacobJin knows. Ask him to take you to the hole in the wall where he was with the French team. Through that opening you can gain access to the temple.
[Hurley looks around for Jin returning]
JacobOh and Hugo, do you still have that Guitar Case I gave you?
Yeah...
JacobBring it!
[Hurley looks at Jacob, slightly confused by whats going on]
Who are you man?
JacobI'm Jacob.
[Jacob has just subdued Richard when he tried to kill him]
JacobWho are you?[Holds up the dagger] And who gave you this?
Where is my wife?
JacobI don't know your wife. Was she on the ship?
She's dead...
JacobThan why are you asking me where she is? [Richard can't answer] Did you meet a man in the jungle dressed in black?
Yes!
JacobWhat did he say to you?
He said that you were the devil![Jacob seems frustrated at this]
JacobWhat else did he say?
He said that you took my wife. Where is she?
JacobThat wasn't your wife.
Yes it was, yes it was! She is here in hell, just like me!
JacobYou think you're in hell?
Where else would I be?
[Jacob drags Richard to the water and starts to drown him]
JacobYou still think you're dead?! You think you're dead?! Why should I stop?!
I want to live!
Jacob[Jacob throws Richard to the ground] That's the first sensible thing you've said. Get up, we need to talk.
JacobThat man who told you to kill me believes it is in every person's nature to sin. I bring people here to prove him wrong.
So you were the one who brought my ship here?
JacobYes,
And there were other people here before me?
JacobYes, many.
What happened to them?
JacobThey're all dead.
If you brought them here, why didn't you help them?
JacobBecause I wanted them to help themselves. To know the difference between right and wrong without me having to tell them. It's all meaningless if I have to force them do anything. Why should I have to step in?
But if you don't he [The Man in Black] will.
Jacob[Pauses, taken aback] Do you want a job?
A job? Doing what?
JacobWell if I don't want to step in, maybe you could do it for me. You could be my, my representative, an intermediary to me and the people I bring to the Island.
What would I get in return?
JacobYou tell me...
I want my wife back.
JacobI can't do that.
Can you absolve me of my sins?
JacobI can't do that either.
Then I never want to die...I want to live forever.
Jacob[Smiles, lays a hand on his shoulder] Now that, that I can do.
[the Man in Black sits on a log in the shade, he holds a white stone. Jacob shows up]
JacobMorning.
Morning.
JacobI see you got my present.
Don't gloat, Jacob. It doesn't become you.
JacobSo you tried to kill me.
You expect an apology?
JacobI'd just like to know why you did it.
Because I want to leave. Just let me leave, Jacob.
JacobAs long as I'm still alive, you're not going anywhere.
Then now you know why I want to kill you. And I will kill you, Jacob.
JacobEven if you do, someone else will take my place.
Well, then I'll kill them too.
Jacob[Hands him a jug of wine] Well here's something to pass the time. See ya around. [Jacob leaves]
Sooner than you think. [He smashes the jug against the log, releasing the wine]
JacobWhat is it?
It's a game. You play it.
JacobHow do you know how?
I just know.
[as they play Senet] You can't do that, Jacob.
JacobWhy not?
Because it's against the rules
JacobYou made the rules.
I found it. One day, you can make up your own game and everyone else will have to follow your rules.
[Mother has brought Jacob to the cave of light]
Do you recognize this place?
JacobYes,
Do you remember what I showed you here?
JacobThe light.
You're going to protect it now.
JacobWhat's down there?
Life. Death. Rebirth. It's the source. The Heart of the Island. Just promise me that no matter what you do, you won't ever go down there.
JacobWould I die?
It would be worse than dying, Jacob. Much worse. [She pulls out a jug of wine and pours some into a cup. She whispers a Latin incantation over it] Here, drink this.
JacobWhat happens if I do?
You will accept the responsibility that you will protect this place for as long as you can. And then you'll have to find your replacement.
JacobI don't want to protect this place.
Someone has to.
JacobI don't care.
My time is over.
JacobWhy, why is your time over?
It has to be you, Jacob!
JacobNo it doesn't, you wanted it to be him [The Man in Black]! But now I'm all you have.
It was always supposed to be you, Jacob. I see that now. And one day you'll see it too. But until then, you don't really have a choice. Now please, take the cup and drink.
[Jacob drinks from the cup]
Now you and I are the same.
So you're the one who wrote our names on the wall?
JacobI am.
Sun and Jin Kwon and Sayid Jarrah. You wrote their names on the wall?
JacobYes,
Is that why they're dead?
JacobI'm very sorry.
You're sorry?
Kate...
No, I wanna know why. I wanna know that Sun and Jin and Sayid didn't die for nothing.
Jacob...Come and sit down and I will tell you what they died for. I'll tell you why I chose them. And why I chose you. And I'll tell you everything you need to know about protecting this Island, because by the time that fire burns out, one of you is gonna have to start doing it. [The group gathers around] I don't really know where to start.
How about why you brought us to the Island.
JacobI brought all of you here because I made a mistake. A mistake I made a very long time ago, and now, because of that there's a very good chance every single one of you and everyone you've ever cared about is going to die.
What mistake?
JacobYou call him "The Monster." But I'm responsible for what happened to him. I made him that way. And ever since then he's been trying to kill me. It was only a matter of time before he figured out how, and when he did, someone would have to replace me. And that's why I brought you all here.
Tell me something, Jacob. Why do I gotta be punished for your mistake? What made you think you could mess with my life? I was doing just fine until you dragged my ass to this rock.
JacobNo you weren't. None of you were. I didn't pluck any of you out of some happy existence. You were all flawed. I chose you because you were all like me. You were all alone. You were all looking for something you couldn't find out there. I chose you because you needed this place as much as it needed you.
Why did you cross my name off of your wall?
JacobBecause you became a mother. It's just a line of chalk in a cave. The job is yours if you want it, Kate.
What is the job?
JacobThere's a light at the center of this Island. You have to make sure it never goes out. That's how you protect it.
Your monster friend said there's nothing to protect it from.
JacobYou have to protect it from him. You must do what I couldn't. What I wasn't able to do.
You want us to kill him. Is that even possible?
JacobI hope so, because he is certainly going to try to kill you.
So...how are you gonna pick?
JacobI'm not going to pick, Hugo. I'm going to give you the one thing I was never given. A choice.
And if none of us chooses?
JacobThen this ends very badly.
[There is a pause as everyone looks at one another]
I'll do it. This is why I'm here. This is...this is what I'm supposed to do.
JacobIs that a question, Jack?
...No,
JacobGood, then it's time.
