DThe Doctor
You wanna hear a story?
Don't give him more power.
DThe Doctor
Really short, really short. You know Hemingway. I saw some of his books back there. I met him. I wanted to see how good he was, so I challenged him. "Hemy, baby, write me the shortest story you can". He wrote it in six words. Short as hell! Do you wanna hear mine? I'm born. I die. I'm born.
[The Barber's haircut machine overloads.]
BThe Barber
You are giving me power. But how? I am not connected to you!
DThe Doctor
No, the engine is connected to me. My stories, my voice. Look. On!
[The screens turn on and play parts from the Doctor's past.]
...in the universe can do what we're doing.
[Cut to a quick flash of the Third Doctor.]
NDThe Ninth Doctor
Just this once...
I'm the Doctor. I'm a Time Lord.
When you fire that first shot, no matter how right you feel, you have no idea who's going to die!
When people need help, I never refuse.
I am definitely not the man I was.
[Cut to a short glimpse of the Eleventh Doctor.]
DThe Doctor
My body is like a barbershop. All of them inside, telling their stories, bickering! I... will not... fail them!
[In the barbershop they are treated to colour versions of the Fourth, Eighth and First Doctors. The spider starts moving again, faster and faster. The little screen shows the Fifth Doctor with Tegan Jovanka and Vislor Turlough, then the Sixth Doctor.]
BThe Barber
[laughs] You told a never-ending story, and gave me never-ending power!
He's taken out a third of the engine. You can't process that power. Your engine could overload and explode! We'll all be sucked into space!
BThe Barber
You will not do that. You will not! No. No! Would you? The stories say you protect life.
DThe Doctor
That is what I am doing.
Who are you, then? Who's that lot down there? [The Doctor ignores her] I said, who are they?!
DThe Doctor
They're made of plastic. Living plastic creatures. They're being controlled by a relay device on the roof. Which would be a great big problem if--[he pulls a beeping bomb out of his coat] --I didn't have this. So I'm gonna go upstairs and blow it up. And I might well die in the process. But don't worry about me, no. You go home, go on! Go and have your lovely beans on toast. [suddenly serious] Don't tell anyone about this, 'cos if you do, you'll get them killed. [closes the door, then opens it again] I'm the Doctor, by the way. What's your name?
DThe Doctor
Nice to meet you, Rose! [holds up the bomb, shaking it slightly while grinning.] Run for your life!
DThe Doctor
[turns around] Do you know like we were saying? About the Earth revolving? [walks towards Rose] It's like when you're a kid. The first time they tell you that the world's turning and you just can't quite believe it 'cos everything looks like it's standing still. [looks at Rose] I can feel it. [takes Rose's hand] The turn of the Earth. The ground beneath our feet is spinning at 1,000 miles an hour, and the entire planet is hurtling around the sun at 67,000 miles an hour, and I can feel it. We're falling through space, you and me, clinging to the skin of this tiny little world, and if we let go... [drops Rose's hand] That's who I am.
[Jabe approaches the Doctor]
JJabe
The Gift of Peace. [takes a cutting, hands it to the Doctor] I bring you a cutting of my Grandfather.
DThe Doctor
Thank you! [hands Jabe's cutting to Rose] Yes, gifts, um... [searches his pockets, clears his throat] I give you, in return, air from my lungs. [gently blows into Jabe's face]
JJabe
[surprised] How... intimate.
DThe Doctor
There's more where that came from.
JJabe
[impressed] I bet there is.
DThe Doctor
You think it'll last forever: people and cars and concrete. But it won't. One day, it's all gone. Even the sky. [long pause] My planet's gone. It's dead. It burned, like the Earth. It's just rocks and dust. Before its time.
DThe Doctor
There was a war, and we lost.
A war with who? [The Doctor doesn't answer, seemingly lost in thought.] What about your people?
DThe Doctor
I'm a Time Lord. I'm the last of the Time Lords. They're all gone. I'm the only survivor. I'm left traveling on my own, 'cos there's no one else.
DThe Doctor
You've seen how dangerous it is — do you want to go home?
I don't know... I want... Oh, can you smell chips?
DThe Doctor
Yeah. [laughs] Yeah!
Right then, before you get me back in that box, chips it is. And you can pay.
DThe Doctor
[pats down his pockets] No money.
[laughs slightly] What sort of date are you? Come on, then, tight wad, chips are on me... we've only got five billion years 'til the shops close!
The thing is, Doctor, the Gelth don't succeed, 'cos I know they don't. I know for a fact there weren't corpses walking around in 1869.
DThe Doctor
Time's in flux, changing every second. Your cozy little world could be rewritten like that. [snaps his fingers] Nothing is safe, remember that - nothing.
DThe Doctor
Oh, that's just what I need! Don't you dare make this place domestic!
MSMickey Smith
You ruined my life, Doctor. [the Doctor turns and looks at him, irritated] They thought she was dead, I was a murder suspect because of you!
DThe Doctor
[looks at Rose] See what I mean? Domestic!
I bet you don't even remember my name!
DThe Doctor
No, it's Ricky.
I think I know my own name!
DThe Doctor
You think you know your own name? How stupid are you?
