Aang

Aang

[in the Avatar State, with the voice of the previous Avatars] Fire Lord Ozai, you and your forefathers have devastated the balance of this world. And now, you shall pay the ultimate price!

Aang

[horrified] Firebenders? They were here?

Aang

[sadly] Gyatso.

Sokka

Hey Aang, you find my dinner yet? [he sees Aang crying and walks up to him] Aang, I wasn't really gonna eat the lemur, okay? [he notices Gyatso's skeleton] Oh man... Come on, Aang. Everything will be alright. [He puts his hand on Aang's shoulder] Let's get out of here.

Katara

Aang! [she turns and runs to find Aang]

Send word to the Fire Lord immediately: The Avatar has returned!

Sokka

Aang, come on! Snap out of it! [He yells as he is blown back by a gust of wind created by Aang]

Katara

[to Sokka] What happened?!

Sokka

He found out firebenders killed Gyatso!

Katara

Oh no! It's his Avatar Spirit. He must have triggered it! I'm gonna try and calm him down!

Sokka

Well do it! Before he blows us off the mountain!

Katara

Aang, I know you're upset, and I know how hard it is to lose the people you love! I went through the same thing when I lost my mom! Monk Gyatso and the other airbenders may be gone, but you still have a family! Sokka and I, we're your family now!

Sokka

Katara and I aren't going to let anything happen to you, promise.

Aang

[quietly] I'm sorry.

Katara

It's okay. It wasn't your fault.

Aang

But you were right. And if firebenders found this temple, that means they found the other ones too...I really am the last airbender...

Zhao

So this is the great Avatar, master of all the elements. I don't know how you managed to elude the Fire Nation for a hundred years, but your little game of hide-and-seek... is over.

Aang

[angrily] I've never hidden from you. Untie me and I'll fight you right now!

Zhao

Uhh, no. [acts smarmy] Tell me, how does it feel to be the only Airbender left? Do you miss your people? [Aang looks down sadly] Oh, don't worry. You won't be killed like they were. [Aang snaps angrily again] See, if you die, you'll just be reborn, and the Fire Nation will have to begin its search for the Avatar all over again. So I'll keep you alive... but just barely.

Zhao

[angrily] Blow all the wind you want! Your situation is futile. There is no escaping this fortress, and no one is coming to rescue you.

Aang

Master, I need to learn firebending.

Jeong Jeong

Only a fool seeks his own destruction.

Aang

[sits down] I'm the Avatar. It's my destiny to— [Jeong Jeong cuts off Aang's sentence]

Jeong Jeong

Destiny? What would a boy know of destiny?! If a fish lives its whole life in this river, does he know the river's destiny? No! Only that it runs on and on out of his control. He may follow where it flows, but he cannot see the end. He cannot imagine the ocean.

Aang

[feels unsure] Okay... But it's the Avatar's duty to master all of the bending disciplines.

Jeong Jeong

To master the bending disciplines, you must first master discipline itself. But you have no interest in this, so I have no interest in you. Now, get out.

Aang

Please, I have to learn. This could be my only chance. [Jeong Jeong lashes back at Aang]

Jeong Jeong

Are you deaf?! How can I teach you if you refuse to listen?! Before learning firebending, you must learn water and earth. Water is cool and soothing. Earth is steady and stable. But fire... fire is alive. It breathes, it grows. Without the bender, a rock will not throw itself! But fire will spread and destroy everything in its path if one does not have the will to control it! That is its destiny! You are not ready! You are too weak!

Roku

You think I am weak?

Jeong Jeong

Avatar Roku! No, no! [bowing his head in respect] I did not mean that!

Roku

I have mastered the elements a thousand times in a thousand lifetimes. Now, I must do it once again. You will teach the Avatar firebending.

Jeong Jeong

[coming out of his vision] Yes, yes... I will teach you.

Aang

Really? That's great!

What do you want me to do? Force Master Pakku to take Aang back as his student?

Katara

Yes! Please.

I suspect he might change his mind, if you swallow your pride and apologize to him.

Katara

[reluctantly] ...Fine.

[mockingly] I'm waiting, little girl.

Katara

[angrily] No! No way am I apologizing to a sour old man like you!

Aang

Uh...Katara?

Katara

I'll be outside if you're man enough to fight me!

Aang

I'm sure she didn't mean that!

Sokka

Yeah, I think she did.

Yue

They've stopped firing.

Katara

[upon seeing Aang flying towards them] Aang!

Aang

I can't do it... [to himself] I can't do it.

Katara

What happened?

Aang

I must have taken out a dozen Fire Navy ships, but there's just too many of them. I can't fight them all!

Yue

But... you have to! You're the Avatar.

Aang

I'm just one kid...

Yue

The legends say the moon was the first waterbender. Our ancestors saw how it pushed and pulled the tides, and learned how to do it themselves.

Katara

I've always noticed my waterbending is stronger at night.

Yue

Our strength comes from the spirit of the moon, our life comes from the spirit of the ocean. They work together to keep balance. [Aang begins to brighten up]

Aang

The spirits... Maybe I can find them and get their help!

Yue

How can you do that?

Katara

The Avatar is the bridge between our world and the spirit world. Aang can talk to them!

Yue

Maybe they'll give you the wisdom to win this battle.

Aang

Or maybe they'll unleash a crazy amazing spirit attack on the Fire Nation! [he looks at both Yue and Katara] Or wisdom. That's good, too.

Zhao

[to his guards] I am a legend, now! The Fire Nation will, for generations, tell stories about the great Zhao, who darkened the moon. They will call me Zhao the Conqueror, Zhao the Moon Slayer, Zhao the Invincible! [Momo suddenly lands on Zhao's face and starts pulling on his sideburns] Ugh! Get it off, get it off!

Zhao

Don't bother. [he raises his fist, aiming at Tui]

Aang

[drops his staff] Zhao! Don't.

Zhao

It's my destiny: to destroy the Moon, and the Water Tribe.

Aang

Destroying the Moon won't hurt just the Water Tribe. It will hurt everyone... including you. Without the Moon, everything will fall out of balance! You have no idea what kind of chaos that would unleash on the world!

Iroh

He is right, Zhao!

Zhao

General Iroh. Why am I not surprised to discover your treachery?

Iroh

[sharply] I'm no traitor, Zhao. The Fire Nation needs the Moon, too! We all depend on the balance. [takes up a fighting stance] Whatever you do to that Spirit, I'll unleash on you tenfold! Let it go, NOW!

Princess Yue

...There's no hope now. It's over.

Aang

[speaking with the voices of all past Avatars]... No. It's not over.

[to Aang] Maybe you can avoid me... but she can't. [Katara launches a water attack at Fong, but he deflects it with earth and causes her to sink into the ground up to her knees]

Katara

Aah! I can't move!

Aang

[angrily and frightened] Don't hurt her! [He airbends at Fong, who deflects it]

Sokka

Katara, no!

Aang

[grabs Fong's arm] Stop this! You have to let her go!

You could save her if you were in the Avatar State!

Aang

[tearfully] I'm trying! I'm trying!

Katara

Aang, I'm sinking! [She sinks up to her waist]

I don't see any glowing! [he sinks Katara up to her neck]

Katara

Aah! Please!

Aang

You don't have to do this!

Apparently... I do. [He closes his fist, and Katara is buried completely; Aang leaps to pull her out, but is too late. Enraged, he turns towards Fong, his tattoos and eyes glowing, indicating that he has entered the Avatar State] It worked! It worked! [His expression turns to fear as a massive cyclone begins to form around Aang]

Aang

I don't understand. Why didn't you free yourself? Why did you surrender when Omashu was invaded? What's the matter with you, Bumi?!

[calmly] Listen to me, Aang. There are options in fighting called jing. It's a choice of how you direct your energy.

Aang

I know! [counts with two fingers] There's positive jing when you're attacking, and negative jing when you're retreating.

And neutral jing, when you do nothing!

Aang

[suddenly surprised] There are three jings?

Well, technically there are eighty-five, but let's just focus on the third. Neutral jing is the key to earthbending. It involves listening and waiting for the right moment to strike.

Aang

That's why you surrendered, isn't it?

Yes, and it's why I can't leave now. [Aang sadly turns around, feeling disappointed]

Aang

I guess I need to find someone else to teach me earthbending.

Your teacher will be someone who has mastered neutral jing. You need to find someone who waits and listens before striking. [Momo lands on Aang's shoulders]

Aang

[happily] Hey, Momo!

Momo's mastered a few jings himself! [Momo screeches loudly at Bumi] Goodbye, Aang. I'll see you when the time is right.

[about the great banyan tree] See, this whole swamp is actually just one tree spread out over miles. Branches spread and sink, take root, and spread some more... One big living organism, just like the entire world.

Aang

I get how the tree is one big thing, but the whole world?

Sure. You think you're any different from me, or your friends, or this tree? If you listen hard enough, you can hear every living thing breathing together. You can feel everything growing. We are all living together, even if most folks don't act like it. We all have the same roots, and we are all branches of the same tree.

Katara

But what did our visions mean?

In the swamp, we see visions of people we've lost, people we loved, folks we think are gone. But the swamp tells us they're not. We're still connected to 'em. Time is an illusion, and so is death.

Aang

But what about my vision? It was someone I had never met.

You're the Avatar. You tell me.

Aang

[contemplates] Time is an illusion... So, it's someone I will meet.

Aang

You tell me where he is, now!

[sternly, to his son] What did you do?!

I-It wasn't me!

You said to put a muzzle on him!

Aang

[enraged] You muzzled Appa?!

I'm sorry! I didn't know it belonged to the Avatar!

Aang

[shouts with the voices of past Avatars] TELL ME WHERE APPA IS!

I-I traded him, to some merchants! He's... probably in Ba Sing Se by now. They were gonna sell him there. [Aang's glowing eyes narrow] Please, we'll escort you out of the desert! We'll help however we can!

Sokka

[to the sandbenders] Just get out of here! RUN!
