Roku quotes from Avatar: The Last Airbender

Roku

It's good to see you, Aang. [He smiles slightly] What took you so long?

Aang

Master, I need to learn firebending.

Jeong Jeong

Only a fool seeks his own destruction.

Aang

[sits down] I'm the Avatar. It's my destiny to— [Jeong Jeong cuts off Aang's sentence]

Jeong Jeong

Destiny? What would a boy know of destiny?! If a fish lives its whole life in this river, does he know the river's destiny? No! Only that it runs on and on out of his control. He may follow where it flows, but he cannot see the end. He cannot imagine the ocean.

Aang

[feels unsure] Okay... But it's the Avatar's duty to master all of the bending disciplines.

Jeong Jeong

To master the bending disciplines, you must first master discipline itself. But you have no interest in this, so I have no interest in you. Now, get out.

Aang

Please, I have to learn. This could be my only chance. [Jeong Jeong lashes back at Aang]

Jeong Jeong

Are you deaf?! How can I teach you if you refuse to listen?! Before learning firebending, you must learn water and earth. Water is cool and soothing. Earth is steady and stable. But fire... fire is alive. It breathes, it grows. Without the bender, a rock will not throw itself! But fire will spread and destroy everything in its path if one does not have the will to control it! That is its destiny! You are not ready! You are too weak!

Roku

You think I am weak?

Jeong Jeong

Avatar Roku! No, no! [bowing his head in respect] I did not mean that!

Roku

I have mastered the elements a thousand times in a thousand lifetimes. Now, I must do it once again. You will teach the Avatar firebending.

Jeong Jeong

[coming out of his vision] Yes, yes... I will teach you.

Aang

Really? That's great!

Aang

I'm not gonna make it... I failed.

Aang

Roku?

Roku

You haven't failed, Aang.

Aang

But everyone thinks I'm dead again... they think I've abandoned them. And I'm losing this war...I'm letting the whole world down.

Roku

If anyone is to blame for the state of the world, it is me. I should have seen this war coming, and prevented it. You inherited my problems...and my mistakes. But I believe you are destined to redeem me, and save the world.

Aang

I don't know...

Yue

You already saved the world. And you'll save the world again. But you can't give up.

Aang

You're right, I won't give up.

Katara

You're okay!

Aang

I have so much to do.

Katara

I know, but you'll have our help.

[jokingly] You didn't think you could get out of training just by coming to the Fire Nation did you?

Aang

What about the invasion?

Sokka

We'll join up with my dad and the invasion force on the day of the eclipse.

Hey! What's... [Toph grabs the broken shard of Aang's glider that washed up on shore] Oh, it's your glider.

Aang

That's okay. If someone saw it, it would give away my identity. It's better for now that no one knows I'm alive.

Roku

Mastering the elements takes years of discipline and practise. But if the world is to survive, you must do it by summer's end.

Aang

What if I can't master all the elements in time? What if I fail?

Roku

I know you can do it, Aang, for you have done it before.

Aang

(in disbelief) You were friends with Fire Lord Sozin?

Roku

Back then he was just Prince Sozin...and he was my best friend.

Roku

(after watching his younger self fail to speak to Ta Min) Love is hard, when you're young.

Aang

You don't have to tell me.

Roku

Don't worry, it gets better.

Aang

That's amazing! I can't believe you were friends with Monk Gyatso just like I was!

Roku

Some friendships are so strong they can even transcend lifetimes.

Roku

After all these years, he was still my best friend and a few months later he was my best man.

Aang

Roku, it's that girl who didn't even know you were alive!

Roku

Ta Min... I was persistent. When love is real, it finds a way... and being the Avatar doesn't hurt your chances with the ladies either.
