So what, we're just not gonna talk about it, huh?
JIJane Ives/Eleven
About what?
Oh, I don't know. I'm just curious why, all of a sudden, you look like some kinda MTV punk? [Pause] I'm not mad, kid. I just wanna know where you've been. That's all.
JIJane Ives/Eleven
To see Mama.
Okay. How'd you get there?
JIJane Ives/Eleven
A truck.
JIJane Ives/Eleven
A big truck.
"A big truck?" Whose truck was it?
JIJane Ives/Eleven
A man's.
JIJane Ives/Eleven
A nice man.
Okay. So, let me just get this straight in my head: so, a nice man in a big truck, he drove you to your mama's? And then what, your- your aunt Becky gave you those clothes and that makeup?!
JIJane Ives/Eleven
I... I shouldn't have left.
Hmm-mm, No. No, this isn't on you, kid. I should've been there. I should never have lied to you about your mom... or about when you could leave. A lot of things I shouldn't have done. Sometimes, I feel like I'm... like I'm just some kinda black hole or something.
JIJane Ives/Eleven
"Black hole?"
Yeah, it's a... y'know, it's this thing in outer space. It's like... it sucks everything towards it and destroys it. Sarah had a picture book about outer space, she loved it.
JIJane Ives/Eleven
Who's Sarah?
Sarah? Sarah's my girl. [Looks at her] She's my little girl.
JIJane Ives/Eleven
Where is she?
Well, that's kinda the thing, kid. She, uh... well, she left us.
Yeah. The black hole. It got her. And, somehow... I've just been scared, you know. I've just been scared that it would take you, too. I guess that's why I get... so mad. [Shakes his head] I'm so sorry. For everything. I can be so... so...
JIJane Ives/Eleven
Stupid.
[Chuckles] Yeah... stupid. Just really stupid.
[Eleven squeezes his hand]
JIJane Ives/Eleven
I've been stupid, too.
I guess we broke our rule. [Eleven smiles tearfully] I don't hate it, by the way. This whole... look. Kinda cool.
JIJane Ives/Eleven
[Smirks] Bitchin'.
Okay, sure. [Smiles] "Bitchin'".
[Walking up to the boys] Well isn't this a nice surprise.
[Sees Eleven and drops his bike] WHAT are you doing here?
Eleven
[Deadpan] Shopping.
This is her new style. What do you think?
What's wrong with you? You know she's not allowed to be here!
What is she, your little pet?
Eleven
Yeah, am I your pet?
Eleven
Then why do you treat me like garbage?
Eleven
You said Nana was sick.
She is! [Looks to Lucas for support] She is! She is sick!
Yeah she's sick, she's really sick! That's why, we're here actually.
Yeah yeah, we're shopping! Not for us, but for her, for Nana!
For Nana! [Max stares at him, suspicious]
Also we're here to get a gift for you. [Eleven glares at him] We just, we couldn't find anything that suited you, and I only have like, three dollars and fifty cents so it's hard.
Super hard! It's.. it's expensive.
Eleven
You lie. [Mike just looks at her] Why do you lie? [Mike doesn't respond. Eleven looks at the bus arriving, and, determined, walks up to Mike with a fierce expression] I dump your ass! [Mike looks shocked, while Max looks both shocked and impressed. Eleven turns and walks away to the bus, Max following. They giggle and hi-five]
But here's the thing. When Billy is alone with a girl they make like really crazy noises.
Eleven
They scream?
Yeah, but like, happy screams.
Eleven
Happy screams… what is happy screams?
It's like... I'm just gonna lend you my mom's Cosmo.
[Eleven takes of her handkerchief she realized that Mike vanished]
Eleven
Mike? Mike? Mike? [gets up] Mike! [Screams] MIKE!!!
[Offscreen] He can't hear you. [Reveals himself] You shouldn't have looked for me. Because now I see you. Now we can all see you. You let us in. And now, you are going to have to let us stay. Don't you see? All this time, we've been building it. We've been building it, for you. All that work. All that pain. All of it... for you. And now it's time. Time to end it. And we're going to end you and when you are gone we are going to end your friends.
Eleven
[Screams] NO!!!
And then we are going to end... everyone.
Eleven
[Screams] GET AWAY!!!
Eleven
Did you talk to your mom? About Thanksgiving?
Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I got the okay. I'll be there. And then I was thinking maybe you could come up here for Christmas. And Will too. You can come here before or after Christmas or whatever Mrs. Byers wants but I was thinking Christmas Day could be super fun because we'd all have cool new presents to play with and, uh... [chuckles] Sorry, that made me sound like a seven-year-old.
Eleven
I like presents too.
Yeah, cool. Yeah. I like... I like presents too. [Pause]
Eleven
Mike?
Eleven
Remember that day… at the cabin, you were talking to Max?
Um … I don't think I follow.
Eleven
You talked about your-- your feelings, your heart.
Oh. Oh, yeah, that. Man, that was so long ago. Um … That was really heat of the moment stuff, and we were arguing and… I don't really remember… What did I say, exactly?
Eleven
Mike… I love you too.
[Eleven moves closer and kisses Mike]
JEJane/Eleven
Hi. [Her classmates look bored] For my hero I... I chose my dad. [Angela and her friends make a face] And for my visual aid, I made a diraoma of our cabin.
JJake
More like diarrhea. [Everyone laughs]
GMrs. Gracie
Quiet, everyone. Let's be respectful. [The classroom quiets down]
JEJane/Eleven
[Picks up a figure from her diorama] This is my dad. His name is Hopper. He made the best eggos, and we liked to watch Miami Vice on Fridays. [Meanwhile, as Will watches the presentation, the girl next to them touches his foot with her own, looking at him flirtatiously. He moves his foot away]
JEJane/Eleven
[Holds up another figure] This is Mr. Fibley. He is a squirrel. [Her classmates laugh again. Will nods at her encouragingly] And this is the alarm that my dad made. [Angela raises her hand] Uh, I was never scared because... beca- because... [Glances at her teacher]
GMrs. Gracie
Uh, Angela, let's save questions until the end of Jane's presentation.
AAngela
Yeah, sorry, I'm just like, confused. I thought this was a presentation about a historical hero.
JEJane/Eleven
My dad was in the newspaper.
AAngela
Your local paper? [Laughs mockingly, the other classmates doing the same] I just don't think that's what Mrs. Gracie meant by historical. This is supposed to be about famous people.
JEJane/Eleven
My dad is famous. He saved lots of lives, in a mall fire. He was a hero for people. And he was my hero too! [Her classmates give each other looks]
AAngela
That's not what I'm saying at all. But, it's okay. [Sarcastically] I am so sorry, Mrs. Gracie. I didn't mean to interrupt. I just wanted clarity on the rules of the assignment.
GMrs. Gracie
Well, technically, you are correct. [Angela smirks, and Jane/Eleven begins to tear up, lip trembling] But Jane has decided to do her father. So, please, continue with your presentation, Jane. [A tear falls down Jane/Eleven's cheek, and she takes a few deep breaths]
AAngela
Uh oh. Look who it is.
JEJane/Eleven
You ruined my day!
AAngela
Oh no. Did we embarrass you in front of your boyfriend? [Chuckles]
JEJane/Eleven
[crying] I want you to say sorry to me. And I want you to tell my boyfriend that it was just a joke. And that we are really friends.
AAngela
Or what? [Mockingly holds out her hand] You're gonna hurt us with your mean stare again? [Laughs mockingly] Sorry you can't cry to teacher today. You'll just have to cry to your daddy instead. Oh, wait. Can't do that either.
JJake
[Looks at Chad] Oh ho ho ho!
[Angela and her friends walk away laughing. Enraged, Jane/Eleven grabs a roller skate from a nearby customer]
[Jane/Eleven approaches Angela and her friends who are still laughing]
[Angela spins around only to get struck in the face by Jane/Eleven's roller skate, causing her to fall onto her back, screaming in pain]
JJake
[Shocked] Oh shit! Angela, you okay?! Angela! You okay?!
[Chad places his video camera on a nearby table. Angela's friends help her up, only to find a large gash between her eyes]
JJake
[Horrified] Oh, my god!
SStacy
Oh my god, what do we do?
[Angela moves her hand to touch her forehead, to realize it is bleeding]
JJake
No, no, no, don't! [Angela yelps in horror at the sight of blood]
JJake
You're okay! You're okay!
[Angela begins to cry in pain and distress as Jane/Eleven sees the crowd staring at her. Will and Mike rush to the scene]
Holy shit, El! What did you do? What did you do!?
[Jane/Eleven has a flashback of Martin Brenner, after massacring the scientists and test subjects at the Hawkins Research Laboratory]
What have you done? What have you done!?
All I needed was someone to open the door. And you did that for me. Without even realizing it. Didn't you? And when you did realize, you chose to resist. So I sought a means to open my own doors. I sought... your power. So, don't you see? Once again, you have freed me.
JEJane/Eleven
No. You don't have to do this. You can still stop this.
It is over, Eleven. Your friends have lost. There is nothing... nothing you can do to stop this now. Hawkins will burn and fall. And the rest of this senseless, broken world. And I will be there. I will be there to pick up the pieces when it does. And remake it into something... beautiful. There was a time when I had hoped to have you by my side. But now I just want you to watch.
We find Vecna and we end this once and for all.
Eleven
And then what happens?
You mean after you totally demolish Vecna? In my campaigns if the party wins, then they all live happily ever after.
Eleven
Happily how?
Well, usually what happens is, the party doesn't return to their local village because too much has happened. They've seen too much, so they travel to a far-away land -- a peaceful land, somewhere beautiful with, like, three waterfalls or something and they all start again, together.
Eleven
Do you think that could be real, for us?
Yeah, of course! I mean, not the three waterfalls part, but the other stuff, yeah! Of course. If Vecna's gone, then what's stopping us?
And you got there how, exactly?
Eleven
Get where?
The Wheeler house. Did you take the Henderson shelter?
Eleven
No. Nancy drove me.
Eleven
Yes.
We don't drive ever, do we? Do we?
Eleven
No.
No, we take the tunnels, and we don't surface until it's clear, until it's safe.
Eleven
I wore my hoodie.
Oh, well, geez, that's great. I don't know what we've been crawling around in the mud all this time. We should've just drove you around in your hoodie.
...
You're more like me than I'd like to admit.
Eleven
What, a stubborn punk-ass?
Eleven
You talk loud.
Yeah, I guess I am a stubborn punk-ass. Or at least I was. I never listened to my pops either. Always thought I knew best. Pissed him right off. I remember one day it got so heated, he took me to the recruitment office. He made me enlist right there. He thought the Army would do me some good. Give me some structure, some discipline. But the thing was, I thought I was smarter than the officers.
Eleven
Were you?
Sometimes. But mostly, no, I was just dumb. Naive. I used to trust my gut and my instinct. Never... Like you. Did a lot of crazy things in that war. Reckless things. You might call them brave, but there's a fine line between bravery and stupidity. Saw a lot of brave men die in that war. Friends of mine. My daughter... Sara. She was brave. Bravest person I ever knew. She stared death in the face. She never got scared. She never wavered. Fought her heart out. The doctors said they never saw anything like it. They thought she was gonna make it, too.
Eleven
So that's why you don't want me in here. Because you think Vecna will win and I will die.
I don't think... I don't think anything. I've just been around long enough to know that you can't count on anything in this life. I don't wanna lose you. I won't. Which is why whatever happens from here on out, wherever this blood leads, I need you to do what I say.
Eleven
So don't be a stubborn punk-ass like you?
Yeah, don't be a stubborn punk-ass.
