Locke: What did you lose?
Jack: Excuse me?
Locke: They lost one of my bags. What about you?
Jack: You wouldn't believe me if I told you.
Locke: Try me.
Jack: They lost my father.
Locke: I'm sorry?
Jack: He died a couple of days ago in Australia, and I flew down to get him.
Locke: My condolences. [screaming to Oceanic employee handing him his lost luggage form] Yo!
Jack: The coffin was supposed to go on the plane in Sydney, but it didn't. Apparently he is somewhere in transit, which is their way of saying that they have no idea where the hell he is.
Locke: Well, how could they know?
Jack: They're the ones who checked him in. I mean, they have to have some kind of tracking system.
Locke: No, I'm not talking about the coffin. How could they know where he is? They didn't lose your father, they just lost his body. [Jack ponders this as Locke smiles at him] Either way, your story beats the hell out of mine. All that was in my suitcase was a bunch of knives.
Jack: Some kind of salesman?
Locke: Yeah, something like that. Well, it was nice talking to ya, but I hope you find that coffin.
Jack: I hope you find your knives.
Locke: Thanks.
Jack: You mind if I ask what happened to you? I'm only asking because I'm a spinal surgeon. I didn't mean --
Locke: No, don't worry about it. Surgery isn't going to do anything to help me. My condition is irreversible.
Jack: Nothing is irreversible. [hands him his card] If you ever want a consult, just give me a call. It's on the house.
Locke: Well thanks. [reads his card] Jack Shephard, I'm John, John Locke. [shakes Jack's hand]
Jack: It's nice to meet you, John.
Locke: It's nice to meet you, too.

Locke: My walkabout. An adventure in the outback. Man against nature. But they wouldn't let me go. And I sat there yelling at them. Shouting at them that they couldn't tell me what I can't do. But they were right. I'm sick of imagining of what my life could be out of this chair, Helen. What it would be like to walk down the aisle with you because its not gonna happen. So if you need me to see more doctors, have more consults, if you need me to get out of this chair, I don't blame you. But I don't want you to spend your life waiting for a miracle because there is no such thing.

Miles: And as you can see, Hugo here has assumed the leadership position, so that's... pretty great.

Miles: Oh, that Australian chick's back.
Kate: Wait, what?
Miles: You know that blonde, with the baby.
Kate: Claire?
Miles: Right, Claire. She just strolled in here couple hours ago, acting all weird... Still hot, though.

Miles: So nothing? there wasn't anything? No white light? Angels singing? No dead relatives?
Sayid: I remember being shot
Hurley: You're not a zombie, right?
Sayid: No. I'm not a zombie.

Mother: Every question I answer will simply lead to another question.

Mother: Jacob doesn't know how to lie. He's not like you.
Boy in Black: Why, what am I like?
Mother: You're... special.

Mother: May I join you?
Man In Black: [sheaths his dagger] Yes...How are you?
Mother: I'm worried.
Man In Black: Well, Mother, you should be. I spent 30 years searching for that place you brought me as a child--that...waterfall with that beautiful light. I've walked this island from end to end, not once coming close to finding it. But, then I began to think--what if the light underneath the island--what if I could get to it from someplace else? Figuring out how to reach it took a very long time.
Mother: The people with you, they saw this, too?
Man In Black: Yes, they have some very interesting ideas about what to do with it.
Mother: Do with it? You don't' have any idea wh--
Man In Black: I have no idea because you wouldn't tell me, Mother.
[Man In Black dislodges a stone, which allows light to filter in - Mother notices a large, wooden wheel leaning against the cavern wall]
Mother: What is that?
Man In Black: It's a wheel...We're going to make an opening...one much bigger than this one; and, then I'm going to attach that wheel to a system we're building. A system that channels the water and the light. And then I'm gonna turn it. And when I do...I'll finally be able to leave this place.
Mother: How do you know all this? How do you know it will work?
Man In Black: I'm special...Mother.

Richard: Where is he?
Sawyer: Where the hell did you come from?
Richard: Where is he?!
Sawyer: He ran off.
Richard: Okay, come on, we've gotta go!
Sawyer: Go where?
Richard: To the Temple, let's go, now!
Sawyer: Thanks but I've been to the Temple already. I'm sticking with Locke.
Richard: No, the man you are with is not John Locke.
Sawyer: I know.
Richard: Than why are you with him?
Sawyer: 'Cause he's got answers. He knows why I'm on the Island. Unless you wanna tell me why I'm here, Richard!
Richard: Don't be naive. He's not gonna tell you anything, he's gonna kill you.
Sawyer: If he wanted to kill me he could've done it a dozen times by now.
Richard: You don't understand. He doesn't just want you dead, he wants everyone dead. Everyone you care about, all of them. And he won't stop--[Flees as he hears The Man in Black return]

Sawyer: Do you read?
The Man in Black: Doesn't everybody?
Sawyer: You ever read Of Mice and Men. Steinbeck, it's my favorite.
The Man in Black: No, a little after my time.
Sawyer: It's about these two guys, George and Lenny. Lenny's kinda slow... causin' George problems... so George walks him into the woods and tells him to look out yonder and picture the pretty little house they're gonna live in some day. Then he shoots Lenny in the back of the head.
The Man in Black: That doesn't sound like a very happy ending.
Sawyer: [Sawyer puts a gun to the back of MIB's head] It ain't.
The Man in Black: Something on your mind, James?
Sawyer: I'm wondering what would happen if I was to put a bullet in your head?
The Man in Black: Let's find out?
Sawyer:[Sawyer hesitates and lowers the gun] What are you?
The Man in Black: What I am is trapped. And I've been trapped for so long that I don't even remember what it feels like to be free. Maybe you can understand that. But before I was trapped, I was a man, James. Just like you.
Sawyer: I'm havin' a hard time believin' that...
The Man in Black: You can believe whatever you want, that's the truth. I know what it's like to feel joy... to feel pain, anger, fear... to experience betrayal. I know what it's like to lose someone you love. So if you wanna shoot me, shoot me. But you're so close, James. It would be such a shame to turn back now.

Sawyer: If she dies, I'll kill him.

Sawyer: It's not your fault she's dead... It's mine. She was sittin' right there, right where you are now, tryin' to leave this place - and I convinced her to stay. I made her stay on this island because I didn't want to be alone. You understand that right? ... But, uh... But I think some of us are meant to be alone. [Sawyer glances down at ring he's holding] I was gonna ask her to marry me.

Sayid: Listen carefully. There's a well on the main Island a half mile south from where we were just left. Desmond is inside it. Locke wants him dead, which means you are going to need him. Do you understand me?
Jack: Now why are you telling me this?
Sayid: Because it is going to be you Jack. [Takes the bomb and runs]
Hurley: Sayid!
[Sayid gets to the front of the sub, away from the others, and the bomb goes off, killing him.]

The Man In Black: I'm leavin' for a little while. I got an errand to run.
Sayid: When will you be back?
The Man In Black: In the morning. Keep an eye on the camp while I'm gone.
[The Man In Black turns to leave, Sayid interrupts him and he turns back]
Sayid: I don't feel anything.
The Man In Black: Excuse me?
Sayid: Anger. Happiness. Pain. I don't feel it anymore.
The Man In Black: Maybe that's best, Sayid. It'll help you get through what's coming.

The Man In Black: Is there something wrong, Claire?
Claire: Um... what you said to Jin... about the names on the wall? You told him you needed them all to get off the island?
The Man In Black: Yes I did.
Claire: So... was my name on the wall?
The Man In Black: Nope!
Claire: Then it doesn't matter if I get on that plane then. You don't really need me do you?
The Man In Black: That's not true, Claire. I need you. And there's plenty of room on that plane for all of us.
[Claire seems happy by what she has just been told, but at the same time slightly sad]
Claire: When we go home, Aaron's not going to know me. I'll be a stranger to my own son. He thinks Kate's his mother...Was her name on the wall?
The Man In Black: No it isn't. Not anymore. But I need Kate.
Claire: Why?
The Man In Black: Because Claire, I'm three people shy of getting off this island and Kate can help me get those people on the plane. But... once she does... then whatever happens, happens.
