Richard Alpert quotes from Lost

Richard Alpert

W--what are you doing?

Ben Linus

John wants me to join him.

Richard Alpert

You can't bring him in.

The Man in Black

[as John Locke] Why not?

Richard Alpert

Because only our leader can request an audience with Jacob, and there can only be one leader on the Island at a time, John.

The Man in Black

I'm beginning to think you just make these rules up as you go along, Richard.

The Man in Black

Hello, Richard. It's good to see you out of those chains.

Richard

[terrified] You?

The Man in Black

Me. [knocks Richard out and looks around at everyone else] I am very disappointed. In all of you!

Richard

Where is he?

Sawyer

Where the hell did you come from?

Richard

Where is he?!

Sawyer

He ran off.

Richard

Okay, come on, we've gotta go!

Sawyer

Go where?

Richard

To the Temple, let's go, now!

Sawyer

Thanks but I've been to the Temple already. I'm sticking with Locke.

Richard

No, the man you are with is not John Locke.

Sawyer

I know.

Richard

Than why are you with him?

Sawyer

'Cause he's got answers. He knows why I'm on the Island. Unless you wanna tell me why I'm here, Richard!

Richard

Don't be naive. He's not gonna tell you anything, he's gonna kill you.

Sawyer

If he wanted to kill me he could've done it a dozen times by now.

Richard

You don't understand. He doesn't just want you dead, he wants everyone dead. Everyone you care about, all of them. And he won't stop--[Flees as he hears The Man in Black return]

Jack

[To Richard] Where did you come from?

Richard

You wouldn't believe me if I told you. Temples this way.

Hurley

So dude whats the deal? Are you time traveling? 'Cause you look exactly the same as you did 30 years ago.

Richard

I'm not time traveling. This was a gift from Jacob. Only...It's not a gift at all. Its a curse.

Hurley

So what you're like a Terminator?

Richard

No.

Jacob

Who are you?[Holds up the dagger] And who gave you this?

Richard

Where is my wife?

Jacob

I don't know your wife. Was she on the ship?

Richard

She's dead...

Jacob

Than why are you asking me where she is? [Richard can't answer] Did you meet a man in the jungle dressed in black?

Richard

Yes!

Jacob

What did he say to you?

Richard

He said that you were the devil![Jacob seems frustrated at this]

Jacob

What else did he say?

Richard

He said that you took my wife. Where is she?

Jacob

That wasn't your wife.

Richard

Yes it was, yes it was! She is here in hell, just like me!

Jacob

You think you're in hell?

Richard

Where else would I be?

Jacob

You still think you're dead?! You think you're dead?! Why should I stop?!

Richard

I want to live!

Jacob

[Jacob throws Richard to the ground] That's the first sensible thing you've said. Get up, we need to talk.

Jacob

That man who told you to kill me believes it is in every person's nature to sin. I bring people here to prove him wrong.

Richard

So you were the one who brought my ship here?

Jacob

Yes,

Richard

And there were other people here before me?

Jacob

Yes, many.

Richard

What happened to them?

Jacob

They're all dead.

Richard

If you brought them here, why didn't you help them?

Jacob

Because I wanted them to help themselves. To know the difference between right and wrong without me having to tell them. It's all meaningless if I have to force them do anything. Why should I have to step in?

Richard

But if you don't he [The Man in Black] will.

Jacob

[Pauses, taken aback] Do you want a job?

Richard

A job? Doing what?

Jacob

Well if I don't want to step in, maybe you could do it for me. You could be my, my representative, an intermediary to me and the people I bring to the Island.

Richard

What would I get in return?

Jacob

You tell me...

Richard

I want my wife back.

Jacob

I can't do that.

Richard

Can you absolve me of my sins?

Jacob

I can't do that either.

Richard

Then I never want to die...I want to live forever.

Jacob

[Smiles, lays a hand on his shoulder] Now that, that I can do.

Hurley

She kinda said something else. Something you have to do.

Richard

What?

Hurley

She said you have to stop The Man in Black. You have to stop him from leaving the Island. And she said that if you don't... (speaking in Spanish) ...we'll all go to hell.

The Man in Black

Got to get you on your feet. Gonna need your strength if we're going to escape.

Richard Alpert

Escape?

The Man in Black

That's right. I'm afraid there's only one way to escape from Hell. You're going to have to kill the Devil.

Richard Alpert

A while back, Jacob told me what the Island was, and if he's really standing here right next to me, then just ask him.

I don't have to prove anything to you, Richard. You either come with me or you can keep trying to blow stuff up. Your call, dude.

Richard Alpert

He's lying. Jacob isn't telling us what to do. Because Jacob never tells us what to do. I'm going to make this simple. If that thing leaves the island, that's it. I-it's over.

Miles Straume

What's over?

Richard Alpert

Everything.

Miles

What's in there? A secret-er room?

Ben

It was the room I used to summon The Monster. But that was before I realized it was summoning me.

Ben

Well Richard, I don't know how much we need. Are we planning on disabling the plane or blow it to hell?

Richard

Blow it to hell.

Ben

Than we'd better take it all.

Richard Alpert

I'm not interested in hiding. He's gonna find me sooner or later anyway. I'd rather have it over with.

Miles Straume

These are both great plans, but I'm gonna go with surviving. If you need us, we'll be running through the jungle.
