The Man in Black quotes from Lost

Claire

Why do I have to do it. You could've gotten Sawyer or Jin...Or you could do it yourself?

The Man In Black

If I could do it, I wouldn't be asking you.

Claire

I want what you promised. I want my son back.

The Man In Black

I always do what I say.

Claire

You're going to kill them aren't you?

The Man In Black

Only those that won't listen.

The Man in Black

Hello, Sayid.

The Man in Black

[Startled, he pulls the knife from his chest with a grunt. He is unharmed] Now why'd you go and do that?...You want it back. Take it, I won't bite.

Sayid

[He takes it] What are you?

The Man in Black

Well you seem to have some sort of idea about that, Sayid, considering you stabbed me in the chest without even saying hello.

The Man in Black

Dogen...the man who sent you out here, knew that you had no chance of killing me, and he believed that I would kill you if you tried. And this wasn't the first time that he tried to get someone else to do it for him was it?

Sayid Jarrah

No.

The Man in Black

Then shame on you, for being talked into it so easily.

The Man in Black

Because... my mother was crazy. A long time ago, before I... looked like this... I had a mother, just like everyone. She was a very disturbed woman. And, as a result of that, I had some growing pains. Problems that I'm still trying to work my way through. Problems that could have been avoided had things been different.

Kate

Why are you telling me this?

The Man in Black

Because now Aaron has a crazy mother too.

The Man In Black

About a quarter mile ahead there's a clearing. We'll make camp there. Everybody fill up on water. We might be there a couple of days.

Sawyer

A couple of days? I thought you said we were getting off this rock?

The Man In Black

We are.

Sawyer

When?

The Man In Black

Maybe we should talk about this in private.

Sawyer

Great. Let's go.

The Man In Black

I wish you hadn't interrupted me.

Sawyer

[Sarcasticly] Oh I'm sorry... I forgot my manners.

The Man In Black

I forgive you.

Sawyer

Yeah right....So what happened back at the temple? How'd you know to rescue everybody from that smoke thing?

The Man In Black

I didn't rescue them. [Pause] I'm the smoke thing.

Sawyer

You telling me you killed all of those people?

The Man In Black

I gave them the opportunity to leave peacefully and they didn't take it.

Sawyer

Why not?

The Man In Black

Because they're convinced that they're protecting the Island from me, when in fact all I want to do is leave. [Pause] So it's either kill or be killed. And I don't wanna be killed James.

The Man in Black

I have to take responsibility for Claire's behaviour. I was the one who told her the Others had her baby.

Kate Austen

Why would you tell her that?

The Man in Black

Have you ever had an enemy? Someone that you needed to hate? Very powerful, isn't it? Claire was devastated without Aaron. She needed something to... something to keep her going. So, I gave her something to hate. And then... when you told her the truth... all those feelings, all that anger that she'd been holding on to for so long... it had to go somewhere.

Kate Austen

Very insighful... coming from a dead man.

The Man in Black

Well, nobody's perfect. I'm sorry that this happened. And I'm sure if you give her time, everything will be alright. I promised before that I would keep everyone safe. And that means you too, Kate.

Jacob

Morning.

The Man in Black

Morning.

Jacob

I see you got my present.

The Man in Black

Don't gloat, Jacob. It doesn't become you.

Jacob

So you tried to kill me.

The Man in Black

You expect an apology?

Jacob

I'd just like to know why you did it.

The Man in Black

Because I want to leave. Just let me leave, Jacob.

Jacob

As long as I'm still alive, you're not going anywhere.

The Man in Black

Then now you know why I want to kill you. And I will kill you, Jacob.

Jacob

Even if you do, someone else will take my place.

The Man in Black

Well, then I'll kill them too.

Jacob

[Hands him a jug of wine] Well here's something to pass the time. See ya around. [Jacob leaves]

The Man in Black

Sooner than you think. [He smashes the jug against the log, releasing the wine]

The Man in Black

Got to get you on your feet. Gonna need your strength if we're going to escape.

Richard Alpert

Escape?

The Man in Black

That's right. I'm afraid there's only one way to escape from Hell. You're going to have to kill the Devil.

The Man In Black

I'm leavin' for a little while. I got an errand to run.

Sayid

When will you be back?

The Man In Black

In the morning. Keep an eye on the camp while I'm gone.

Sayid

I don't feel anything.

The Man In Black

Excuse me?

Sayid

Anger. Happiness. Pain. I don't feel it anymore.

The Man In Black

Maybe that's best, Sayid. It'll help you get through what's coming.

The Man In Black

Is there something wrong, Claire?

Claire

Um... what you said to Jin... about the names on the wall? You told him you needed them all to get off the island?

The Man In Black

Yes I did.

Claire

So... was my name on the wall?

The Man In Black

Nope!

Claire

Then it doesn't matter if I get on that plane then. You don't really need me do you?

The Man In Black

That's not true, Claire. I need you. And there's plenty of room on that plane for all of us.

Claire

When we go home, Aaron's not going to know me. I'll be a stranger to my own son. He thinks Kate's his mother...Was her name on the wall?

The Man In Black

No it isn't. Not anymore. But I need Kate.

Claire

Why?

The Man In Black

Because Claire, I'm three people shy of getting off this island and Kate can help me get those people on the plane. But... once she does... then whatever happens, happens.

Sawyer

Where are you two going with the guns?

The Man in Black

Hydra Island, we're taking the outrigger.

Sawyer

Well, why do you gotta take a boat? can't you just do your smoke thing and fly your ass over the water?

The Man in Black

If I could do that, do you think I'd still be here?

Sawyer

[Sarcastic] No, 'cause that'd be ridiculous!

Charles Widmore

Do you know who I am?

The Man In Black

You're Charles Widmore. Do you know who I am?

Charles Widmore

Ha! Well obviously you're not John Locke. Everything else I know is a combination of myth, ghost stories, and jungle noises in the night.

The Man In Black

I think you know a lot more than that judging by these pylons.

Charles Widmore

Why did you come here?

The Man In Black

You took one of my people, Jin Kwon, I want him back.

Charles Widmore

I have no idea what you're talking about.

The Man In Black

You know, a wise man once said that war was coming to this island...I think it just got here.

What do you need a boat for? Can't you just turn into smoke and fly your ass over the water?

The Man in Black

Do you think if I could do that I would still be on this island?

No, 'cause that would be ridiculous...

The Man in Black

Remind me, Desmond, how long were you pressing the button down in that hatch?

Desmond

Three years.

The Man in Black

And here you are, back for more. If I didn't know better, I'd say the Island has it in for you.

Desmond

Oh there's nothing special about me, brother.

The Man in Black

I'm sorry.

Desmond

You're here too. If I didn't know better, I'd say the Island has it in for all of us.

The Man in Black

I couldn't agree more.

Desmond

Who is that?

The Man in Black

...Just ignore him.

Desmond

Do you know that boy?

The Man in Black

I said ignore him!

The Man in Black

Why aren't you afraid?

Desmond

Excuse me?

The Man in Black

You're out here in the jungle, alone, with me. No one else on earth knows you're here. So I wanna know, why aren't you afraid?

Desmond

What's the point in being afraid? [MIB looks slightly intimidated, before smiling and then throwing Desmond down the well they were standing beside]
