Elena
I kind of want to set up Ric with Jo from the hospital. I mean, we both know that he has a soft spot for the "sexy doctor" type. How long do you think it takes after someone comes back to life before they can start dating again?
(hallucination) Damon: Well the fact that you can say that with a straight face is one more reason that I love you.
Elena
So, like, three months?
Elena
It was my birthday. Damon and I spent the entire summer looking for Stefan, and I was trying to put on a good face because Caroline was throwing this party for me but I was so sad... I was two seconds from deciding I wasn't going to go - I wasn't going to leave the room - until Damon walked in to give me my...birthday gift. It was the necklace that Stefan had given me. I'd lost it, but Damon knew what the necklace meant to me; what it meant about my feelings for Stefan. Even though he loved me, he gave me the one thing that represented hope for me and his brother. I knew how much it hurt him. But he did it. It was...the most selfless that he's ever been. And in that moment, I loved him. I didn't want to, I mean, it terrified me, but...for that moment, I loved him.
Elena
[Voiceover] Even after our long and happy life together, Damon is still worried that he will never see Stefan again. That he'll never find peace. But I know he's wrong. Because Peace exists. It lives in everything we hold dear.
Elena
[Glances over and sees Damon has disappeared. Looks back to see her old house with people gathered on the front porch. Jenna motions for her to come join them.] Mom? [Runs over and hugs family]
Elena
[Voiceover] That is the promise of peace. That one day, after a long life. We find each other again.
Elena
All I see is back.
It's a hot back! I'm sensing Seattle and he plays a guitar.
Elena
You're really going to run this whole psychic thing into the ground, huh?
Elena
(about Matt) He hates me.
That's not hate. That's, "You dumped me but I'm too cool to show it, but secretly I'm listening to Air Supply's greatest hits."
I know it's late, but I needed to know if you're okay.
Elena
You know, for months, that's all everyone's wondered about me, if I'll be OK.
Elena
That I'll be fine.
Elena
Ask me tomorrow. (Stefan stares at her) It's warmer in the house, we can talk. Would you like to come in?
Elena
He (Damon) told me about your ex, Katherine?
Elena
She broke your heart.
Elena
When you lose someone, it stays with you. Always reminding you of how easy it is to get hurt.
Elena
It's okay, Stefan. I get it. You have no idea how much I get it. Complicated brother? Check. Complicated Ex? Check. Too complicated to even contemplate dating? Double check. It's okay. We met and we talked and it was epic, but then the sun came up and reality set in.
Elena
So the thing is, I got home tonight planning on doing what I always do. Write in my diary, like I have been since my mother gave me one when I was 10. It's where I get everything out and it all goes in this one little book, that I hide on the 2nd shelf behind this really hideous ceramic mermaid. But then I realized I would just be writing things I should probably be talking about.
Elena
I would write, Dear Diary, Today I convinced myself it's okay to give up. Don't take risks. Stick with the status quo, no drama. Now just isn't the time. But my reasons aren't reasons they're excuses. All I'm doing is hiding from the truth and the truth is, I'm scared Stefan. I'm scared that if I let myself be happy for one moment, that the my worlds going to come crashing down and I don't know if I'll be able to survive that.
Do you want to know what I would write? I met a girl, we talked and it was epic. Then the sun came up and reality set in. Well, this is reality... right here.
Elena
That throw was insane! I didn't know you play football.
I used to. It was a long time ago.
Elena
So why don't you try out for the team?
Elena
So you don't like football?
No, I love football; I think it's a great sport. But in this case I don't think football likes me. You saw Tyler over there, and we both know how Matt feels.
Elena
They don't know you. To them you're just mysterious loner guy. Wouldn't hurt to be a part of the team, make some friends.
Says the girl who spends her alone-time writing in a cemetery.
Elena
Hey, come on, there's more to me than just gloomy graveyard girl. There's a whole other Elena you have yet to meet. She was into everything, very busy.
Well I look forward to meeting her, and when will that be?
Elena
Soon. She's working on it.
[holds up an empty glass] One more.
Elena
Oh, thank you. [gasps when she accidentally drops the glass]
[miraculously catches the glass before it hits the floor; presents it to Elena]
Elena
[laughs] Nice save.
I like you - you know how to laugh. And you make Stefan smile, which is something I haven't seen in a very long time.
Elena
Earlier, did you mean...Katherine?
Elena
How did she die?
In a fire - a tragic fire.
Elena
Recently?
It seems like it was yesterday.
Elena
What was she like?
She was beautiful - a lot like you in that department. She was also very complicated, and selfish, and at times not very kind, but very sexy and seductive.
Elena
So, which one of you dated her first? [passes Damon a plate]
[chuckles] Nicely deduced. Ask Stefan - I'm sure his answer differs from mine. [closes dishwasher]
Elena
[exhales]
I'd quit cheerleading if I were you.
Elena
Why do you say that?
Oh, I saw you at practice. You looked miserable.
Elena
You saw that?
Elena
[sighs] I used to love it. It was fun. Things are different this year - everything that used to matter doesn't anymore.
So don't let it. Quit, move on. Problem solved. Ta-da...
Elena
[chuckles] Some things could matter again.
Maybe. But...seems a little unrealistic to me.
[brief pause]
Elena
I'm sorry.
Elena
About Katherine. You lost her, too.
[for once, Damon is speechless]
