You don't need to buy a kite when you can make one.
S1 E15Unfinished Business
Okay, Everyone set?
Are we forgetting something?
[gasps] Brother!
[Brother comes running out of the house]
[chuckles] Well, we can't forget Brother!
[chuckles] After all, this is a family vacation.
Got the camera, I wanna take lots of pictures.
[Papa Bear has just fallen into the river after being carried out of the cabin in a flood.]
[angrily] That's it! We're going home! The best vacation ever has been nothing but the worst vacation ever! Nothing has gone right. The cabin, the fishing, the berries... THE STEW! It was all supposed to be... fun!
Sometimes the difference between having a bad time and a great time all depends on how you look at it.
And you know what the best part of this vacation is? It's not over yet. Now, who wants to go find some sweet bumble berries for breakfast?
Yes!
Brother Bear Let's go!
[Papa --who was looking for the rest of his newspaper-- finds the rest of his newspaper and sees Brother using it to keep the paint off of his desk. Before that, Sister was hogging the phone when she was talking to Lizzy. Even though Mama needed the phone to call the hardware store. In the meantime, Papa sees Brother. And he --Papa-- wants to know what Brother is doing with the rest of his newspaper.]
[shocked] WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH (THE REST OF) MY NEWSPAPER?!
I'm using it to keep the paint off my desk.
YOU SHOULD HAVE ASKED!
But no one in this family reads the for-sale section!
WELL, I'M READING IT NOW! (NOW I WANT THE REST OF MY NEWSPAPER!)
[After Papa says this, he demands that Brother hands over the rest of his newspaper. Because the "for sale" section was part of his newspaper. And Brother was using it to keep the paint off of his desk, when he should've taken the old newspaper from the recycle bin instead.]
Did you find it? [Phone ringing] Oh! Mrs Honeypot!
Hi Lizzy. [realizes Mama is standing in front of her] Uh-oh! I'll call you back.
[to Sister] You know I have been waiting for mayor's wife to call, and you're always on the phone with Lizzy! You have all day to talk to her tomorrow, so please stay off the phone! And it's your turn to set the table!
Just think, someday you'll be parents with cubs all your own to take care of.
I think maybe we'll skip that part.
And we'll just become grandparents.
Our last play for tonight features Brother and Sister Bear, Cousin Fred, and Lizzie Bruin. It's called "The Trouble with Parents".
[As the school play starts, Brother is "Papa Bear", Sister is "Mama Bear", Cousin Freddy is "Brother Bear", and Lizzy is "Sister Bear"]
Where's (the rest of) my newspaper, son?
I have it, Papa. I'm using it so you don't get any paint on this nice new table you made in your workshop.
What?! You didn't ask me!
But you never read this section, Papa!
That doesn't matter! Ooh, you cubs make me so mad!
[Everyone in the audience laughs, including the grandparents. But Papa and Mama Bear are embarrassed.]
[talking on the phone] Hi, Terry. How are you?
Is that Mrs. Waterspout, dear?
No, Mama. It is my friend, Terry.
You know I'm waiting for a very important telephone call!
I'm sorry, Mama. But I didn't--
You cubs talk on the phone a zillion times a day! It makes me want to SCREAM!
[The cap on Sister's costume flies off.]
[As the school play ends]
You know sometimes.
Our parents are all right.
But sometimes it's hard being a cub when parents seem to blow their tops without a good reason.
Sooner or later, parents grow out of it and become grandparents.
And grandparents never blow their tops at their grandcubs.
Papa, I'm afraid you're sick.
I never get sick... well, almost never.
Well, I'm glad you didn't come by any earlier or you would've missed us.
We were at Dr. Grizzly's for our checkup.
Mama!
Aw, Honey. There, there. It's alright.
Oh, is the lemonade too sour?
Oh no, Sister. It's about the doctor. Honey has her second checkup this afternoon. (Her first check-up at both the doctor and dentist, they were last year.) And (because this year is her second check-up at the doctor's office,) she is a little upset about it.
But Dr. Grizzly is really nice. You'll like getting a checkup.
I don't want to go for a checkup! I'm not going to!
[Honey under the table, and says...!]
I'm staying under here!
[True to what Honey says, she thinks it's better to stay away from seeing the doctor and dentist.]
Sorry. I was just trying to help.
No, it's not your fault. Honey's just got it into her head that her checkup is going to be scary.
It is going to be scary! I'm not going!
Hmm. I'll be right back.
[Honey is hiding because she doesn't want to have her second check-up even though she had her first one already. In fact, since this year’s her second one, she’s going for her annual check-up.]
Now Honey, I think it's time to come out from under there.
Yes, you wouldn't want to get sewen into the quilt.
[from inside the quilt] I'm not coming out until you promise I don't have to go to see the doctor!
When we do the work together, it makes a big job smaller.
And easier.
Uh-huh.
And more fun.
Sometimes, little ideas can help solve the biggest problems.
That's another environment problem in Bear Country. [sees a piece of wood from a bumbleberry tree] And so is this. A sample to add to my endangered and extinct species display. [picks up the piece of wood from a bumbleberry tree]
But I thought endangered species were just animals, Professor.
Well, animals, plants, and even trees can become extinct or endangered.
Go ahead! Whoever wants to go play with Little Miss Hairbow can be my guest!
Would you like to double-dutch with us, Hillary?
[Chuckles] You're kidding, right? Jumping rope's for little cubs. [Hillary gives Sister a thumbs down as she does not want to jump rope] But then looking at that pink ruffled jumper and that hair bow, I guess you are a little cub.
Take that!
En Garde!
Touché!
[Laughing] Now, boys.
Sorry, Mama. But your honey-glazed carrots are so good.
Hey! What about my turkey loaf? I thought that was pretty good too.
Best in Bear Country Papa.
Too bad Sister doesn't think so.
Not hungry tonight, Sister?
Not really.
Is something wrong, sweetie?
Well, Hillary made fun of my clothes, my name, and said jumping rope is for little cubs!
Who's Hillary?
A new girl at school. She wears cool clothes, a headband, and listens to cool music on a boom box. She even has hoop earrings. Mama, do you think jumping rope is just for little cubs?
No, I don't. But more important then what I or Hillary or anybody else thinks is what you think. Do you think jumping rope is just for little cubs?
No.
Then that's all that matters. Just be yourself and others will accept you for who you are.
Thanks, Mama.
