“The Hunting Party” · Season 2, Episode 11

In this episode: Dr. Jack Shephard (5), Sawyer Ford (5), John Locke (3), Hurley Reyes (1), Charlie Pace (1), Tom Friendly (1)

[to Sawyer] Hey, what are you doing?

What's it look like? (arming self) I'm coming with ya.

You're still on antibiotics.

It's a good thing I'm traveling with my doctor then.

[to Jack] What'd she do to you?

What?

Kate. What'd she do?

She didn't do anything.

Right. Yellin' at her because she wanted to help get Mike back makes a lot of sense.

Why don't you go back and see if I hurt her feelings?

I'm just sayin'...

Yeah. I know. You love her.

[to Locke] Oh, I don't know, Mr. Clean, I probably would have gone around Mt. Vesuvius.

Why'd you choose that name?

Ain't it obvious? All you need is an ear-ring and a mop.

So what do you think is the story with that Libby chick?

Story?

She's kind of cute, right? You know, in an I've-been-terrorized-by-the-Others-for-forty-days kind of way?

Yeah, there is that.

I think I have a chance with her. I mean, it's a classic desert island scenario.

[to Locke] Well, yeah, there's my favorite leaf. How could I forget this place?

[The hunting party is talking to Mr. Friendly.]

FMr. Friendly

[to Jack] Let me ask you something. How long have you been here on the island?

50 days.

FMr. Friendly

Fuuh! 50 days. That's about two whole months. Tell me, when you go over to man's house for the first time, do you take off your shoes? Do you put your feet up on his coffee table? Do you walk to the kitchen and eat food that doesn't belong to you? Open doors to rooms you got no business opening?

[Jack, Sawyer and Locke stare silently]

FMr. Friendly

You know, somebody a whole lot smarter than anybody here once said, since the dawn of our species, man has been blessed with curiosity. [to Jack] You know the other one 'bout curiosity, don't you Jack?

[Jack stares silently]

FMr. Friendly

This is not your island. This is our island and the only reason that you're livin' on it, is because we let you live on it.

[Laughs] I don't believe you.

FMr. Friendly

You don't believe what?

I think that you have two other guys out there with guns. I think there's more of us than there are of you. I think if you had any real power you wouldn't have had to send a spy. Ethan?

FMr. Friendly

That's an interesting theory...LIGHT EM UP![A dozen torches ignite in the trees, revealing they are surrounded]

FMr. Friendly

Now we seem to have a misunderstanding. But we're drawing a line right here and if you cross we are gonna go from misunderstanding to...something else. Now lay down your guns, turn around, and go home.

No.

[The hunting party is talking to Tom Friendly.]

Just sit down, Jack. Nobody's going to hurt you. I come in peace.

How do you know our names?

[Tom smiles]

You took Walt.

Walt's fine. He's a very special boy.

Look, you said you wanted to talk. Talk.

Let me ask you something. How long you been here on the island?

50 days.

Oooo, 50 days. That's what, almost 2 whole months, huh? Tell me, you go over a man's house for the first time, do you take off your shoes? Do you put your feet up on his coffee table? Do you walk in the kitchen, eat food that doesn't belong to you? [to Locke] Open the door to rooms you got no business opening? [to all] You know, somebody a whole lot smarter than anybody here once said: "Since the dawn of our species man's been blessed with curiosity." You know the other one about curiosity, don't you, Jack? This is not your island. This is our island. And the only reason you're living on it...is 'cause we let you live on it.

[smiling] I don't believe you.

You don't believe what?

I think you've got one guy up there with a gun. I think there's more of us than there are of you. I think if you had any real strength, you wouldn't have had to send a spy -- Ethan.

That's an interesting theory. [raising his arms and yelling] Light 'em up!

[torches all around the survivors are lit]

We've got a misunderstanding, Jack -- your people, my people. So listen carefully. Right here, there's a line. You cross that line, we go from misunderstanding to something else. Now, give me your weapons, turn around, go home.

Jack, maybe...

I hoped it wouldn't come to this. [yelling] Bring her out, Alex!

[A figure with a bag over their head is pushed out]

She was following you. Like I said -- curiosity.

[Tom pulls the bag off the figure's head, revealing Kate. He puts a gun to her neck. Sawyer moves toward them]

[to Sawyer] Don't. [to Jack] Jack, the decision you gotta make right now is this -- can you live with the fact that I shot this woman right in front of you when you could have saved her life by giving up and going home? Or are you going to give me your guns, turn around and walk away. It's your call, Jack.
