Haven't you any appreciation for what I've done? Even on an intellectual level? Because let me tell you something, my serious friend, the power of the vote is a romantic anachronism.
No, my friend. You are.

Haven't you any appreciation for what I've done? Even on an intellectual level? Because let me tell you something, my serious friend, the power of the vote is a romantic anachronism.
No, my friend. You are.
How's Rausch?
Doc checked him and he's fine. And in his cell where he's gonna stay.
You're that confident that you'll win?
I'm sure of it. I bribed the judge. I told her Bayliss would have sex with her for a favorable ruling.
You two-timing pig.
Well, she was naked underneath those black robes.
Hey, look. It's Mr. Sunshine!
Oh, no, no, no. I'm tired of being the only one around here who gives a damn. You're looking at the new Frank Pembleton. Budding Republican and practicing selfish bastard. Savior of no one but himself. Shot of Gold Natty Bo. This is the new me!
One day you're gonna run for office and rue those words.
You always do this to me, nobody else, just me. Just your partner.
You ordered...a meatball hero?
Grilled cheese.
Oh, that's it.
That's what? What's wrong with a grilled cheese sandwich?
It's so... you know... white boy.
White boy?
Yeah, it's such a non-statement. White bread, American cheese, you know?
This isn't about the sandwich Frank, this is about you and me.
No, it's the sandwich.
You know, you're starting to display passive-aggressive tendencies. You're trying to tell me something by not bringing me lunch.
No. It's the sandwich.
Gimme my money back. I want my money back.
You have to wait for change.
Where's your mustache?
Oh, I'm trying a new look right now.
Well, stop trying.
It was a grilled cheese. Get a grip.
It wasn't the sandwich, partner.
Does the name Poulson ring a bell with you, Jimmy Poulson?
Yeah. Poulson was a policeman in the Northwest around '73, '74. During that time a cop named Reinman was k*lled during a traffic stop and every cop in the city was hunting the shooter.
And the rule was then if you ran into him on the street, you k*lled him. No questions asked.
So what about Poulson?
Poulson was a good cop, but he had the misfortune of cornering the Reinman shooter in a Pimlico alley.
And?
And he let him surrender. I was working Tactical during the time, and I was in the district station house when Poulson brought the shooter in.
So what happened?
Turned him over to the desk sergeant, and a number of Reinman's friends grabbed the sh**t, dragged him out of the lock-up, took him back into the cell block and beat him bloody. Ever since that day not one cop, not one cop spoke a word to Poulson.
Man! Here's to the good old days.
Yeah. I don't agree with a lot of those things that happened back then, but back in the '70's, '60's, if you even dreamed of killing a cop or one of the cop's relatives, you woke up and you apologised.
Jimmy Poulson and Jake Rodzinski, both of them born at the wrong time.
it would be back in the Northwest, and standing in the parking lot, and listening to those cops beat that prisoner in his cell and hearing him scream for justice, just screaming for justice. And I remember this... the sergeant laughing and saying, "There ain't no justice here. It's just us."
But nowadays, thinking about this Kenny Damon case, it makes me wonder about... us.
I'll have Nettles shipped to the Grand Jury and arrange necessary warrants. We have him on possession and stolen property. He confesses to murder. He thinks because he didn't kill anybody, he'll be on lesser charges. Which proves, once again, that crime makes you stupid.
I can't stop seeing her face. Adena Watson's face in the rain. Wounds on her body. She was so tiny. I try not to care, but if I do that, if I actually stop caring, then I stop being who I am. No job's worth that.
Those guys are like a family. I have never, ever felt that in Homicide. We may be the best, the elite, but we are not a family.
Yes we are. But we're like a real family. Opinionated, argumentative, holding grudges, challenging each other. We push each other to be better than we are. That kind of thing doesn't happen at barbecues or ball games. It happens on the job where it's supposed to. Putting down a murder. The work itself is the most important thing. What we do is important. We speak for those who can no longer speak for themselves and you're not gonna ever find anything like that anywhere, not in LA, or patrolling the grounds at Disneyland.
Frank, I work with you, not for you.
Excuse me?
You never say please, you never say thank you.
Please don't be an idiot. Thank you.
You don't think much of me, do you?
Actually, I have no opinion of you one way or another. You have yet to appear on my radar screen.
You've been yelling a lot lately. At the drop of a hat, you start screaming.
Why would I yell if someone dropped their hat?
This isn't about me, Frank. It's about Adena. It's about avenging Adena Watson's murder.
No. It's about you. It's always been about you. Do you think I don't know you?
Don't you see, Frank? The killer beat me. He beat me. Dooley, Tucker, whoever he is, he beat me. It was my first case Frank, my first case. I hadn't even started to be a Homicide Detective yet, and he beat me. I put everything I had into that case and it wasn't enough. I let myself care about this case and if he walks out of here, it'll all have been for nothing. It's all over.
