There we are! Well, what do you think?
Victoria
I don't know... I can't believe it! [The Doctor chuckles] It's so big! Where are we?
Well it's the TARDIS! It's my home! At least it has been for a considerable number of years...
Victoria
What are all these knobs?
What, these? [Flicks a panel of levers] Instruments.
These are for controlling our flight.
Victoria
[Laughs] Flight?!
Well, yes! You see, we travel around in here through time and space!
Oh, no, no, no, no, don't laugh, it's true! Your father and Maxtible were working on the same problem! But I have, perfected a, rather special model, that allows me to travel through the universe of time.
Victoria
How can you? I mean, if what you say is true, then you must be about, well.... how, old..?
Well, if we counted Earth terms, I suppose I must be about 400.... yes, about 450 years old! Quite...
Now, I think Victoria might find that dress a little impractical if she's going to join us on our adventures. Jamie, show her where she can find some new ones.
And try to give us a smooth takeoff Doctor, we don't want to frighten her.
A smooth takeoff...? A SMOOTH TAKEOFF? WHAT A NERVE! [He dematerialises the TARDIS, clearly annoyed with what Jamie had said]
You look very nice in that dress, Victoria.
Victoria
Thank you. Don't you think it's a bit...
A bit short? Oh, I shouldn't worry about that. Look at Jamie's.
[offended] Hey, I'll have you know that- [looks at his kilt] Oh, aye.
Are you happy with us, Victoria?
Victoria
Yes, I am. At least, I would be if my father were here.
Victoria
I wonder what he would have thought if he could see me now.
You miss him very much, don't you?
Victoria
It's only when I close my eyes. I can still see him standing there, before those horrible Dalek creatures came to the house. He was a very kind man, I shall never forget him. Never.
No, of course you won't. But, you know, the memory of him won't always be a sad one.
Victoria
I think it will. You can't understand, being so ancient.
Victoria
I mean old.
Victoria
You probably can't remember your family.
Oh yes, I can when I want to. And that's the point, really. I have to really want to, to bring them back in front of my eyes. The rest of the time they... they sleep in my mind and I forget. And so will you. Oh yes, you will. You'll find there's so much else to think about. To remember. Our lives are different to anybody else's. That's the exciting thing! There's nobody in the universe can do what we're doing.
AAnnouncement
Red state emergency. Evacuation phase three. Phase three evacuate. Transport section leaders report now. Phase three evacuation.
Victoria
It seems safe enough.
[A woman walks towards them.]
We're discovered. [She pins labels on the travellers] Oh, thank you.
Thank you. Excuse me, miss, I'm Jamie McCrimmon, do you think you could tell us where we are?
[The woman walks away]
She doesn't want to know, Jamie.
Victoria
Hey, this says we're on evacuation flight seven.
That's rather inhospitable. We've only just arrived.
Hey, and this tag, it says I'm a scavenger. And yours does too! Here, we're not beggars.
Victoria
What is it, Doctor?
[The Doctor listens at a door]
It sounds like electronic machinery. Like a computer. But there's something wrong with its pitch.
Victoria
Oh, no. Now look, it might be dangerous. Now let's leave it.
Victoria
Doctor.
[Smiles mischievously] Let's go in!
Victoria
What?
Did you see how those lassies were dressed?
Victoria
Yes, I did. And trust you to think of something like that.
Well, I couldn't help thinking about it.
Victoria
Well, I think it's disgusting, wearing that kind of… thing.
Oh, aye, so it is, so it is. You, eh, you don't see yourself dressed like that then?
Victoria
Jamie!
Oh, I'm sorry. It was, eh, just an idea.
Victoria
We will now change the subject, please. I want to look at this man.
[Behind the curtain, the warrior flexes his claw, opens his mouth and moves his head.]
You mean to say that this place supplies all the gas for the whole of the south of England?
PPrice
And for the whole of Wales.
Victoria
What are all those lights for?
PPrice
Well, that's a plan of the entire compound and each of those lights represents a remote control camera that I can switch through to this screen if I want to look at any particular area. Like this.
Oh. Where are all these rigs people talk about?
PPrice
Well, they're out at sea, of course, but that plan over there shows you the relative position of all the rigs under our command.
Victoria
What's the big one in the middle?
PPrice
Well, that's the central control rig complex, the sort of the nerve centre of the whole thing. The other rigs feed her with gas and she in turn pumps it to us via the main pipeline, see.
Victoria
How awful to have to live out at sea. And lonely.
PPrice
Oh, I don't know. Mister Robson once spent four years on one of the early rigs without ever going ashore.
Aye, that would account for quite a lot.
Queen Victoria
Since my husband's death, I find myself with more of a taste for supernatural fiction.
Queen Victoria
Very much. Oh, completely. And that's the charm of a ghost story, isn't it? Not the scares and chills, that's just for children, but the hope of some contact with the great beyond. We all want some message from that place. It's the Creator's greatest mystery that we're allowed no such consolation. The dead stay silent, and we must wait.
[Rose and the Doctor kneel before Queen Victoria who is armed with a sword]
Queen Victoria
By the power invested in me by the Church and the state, I dub thee [taps the sword on the Doctor's shoulders] Sir Doctor of Tardis. By the power invested in me by the Church and the state, I dub thee [does the same for Rose] Dame Rose of the Powell Estate. You may stand.
[Rose and the Doctor stand up]
They're never gonna believe this back home.
Your Majesty, you said last night about receiving no message from the Great Beyond. I think your husband cut that diamond to save your life. He's protecting you even now, Ma'am, from beyond the grave
Queen Victoria
[sternly] Indeed, then you may think on this, also; that I am not amused.
[The Doctor sighs at having lost his bet with Rose]
Queen Victoria
Not remotely amused. [The Doctor and Rose straighten their faces] And henceforth...I banish you.
Queen Victoria
I have rewarded you, Sir Doctor, and now you're exiled from this empire, never to return. [she steps towards Rose and the Doctor] I don’t know what you are, the two of you, or where you’re from, but I know that you consort with stars and magic, and think it fun. But your world is steeped in terror, and blasphemy, and death, and I will not allow it. You will leave these shores and you will reflect, I hope, on how you came to stray so far from all that is good, and how much longer you may survive this...terrible life. [she angrily steps away from them] Now leave my world, and never return!
Queen Victoria
What will you do? Will you stay here?
ILady Isobel
I don't think I could. I'd sell it, or I'd pull this place down.
[Queen Victoria looks back at the 'Torchwood House' sign]
Queen Victoria
Although we may not speak of these events in public, they will not be forgotten. I promise you that. Your husband's sacrifice, the ingenuity of his father; they will live on.
Queen Victoria
I saw, last night, that Great Britain has enemies beyond imagination, and we must defend our borders on all sides. I propose an Institute to investigate these strange happenings and to fight them. I would call it Torchwood; the Torchwood Institute. And if this Doctor should return, then he should beware, because Torchwood will be waiting.
