Don't let them build to full power!

RSRiver Song

I know! There's a reason why I'm shooting, honey! What are you doing?

Helping!

RSRiver Song

You've got a screwdriver, go build a cabinet!

That's really rude!

RRiver

Shut up and drive!

[furious] Where the hell have you been? Every time you asked, I have been there! Where the hell were you today?!

RRiver

I couldn't have prevented this.

The Doctor You could have tried!

RRiver

And so, my love, could you. [looks toward Amy and Rory] I know you're not all right, but hold tight, Amy, because you're going to be.

You think I wanted this?! I didn't do this! This... this wasn't me!

RRiver

This was exactly you. All this, all of it. You make them so afraid. When you began, all those years ago, sailing off to see the universe, did you ever think you'd become this? The man who can turn an army around at the mention of his name? "Doctor" - the word for "healer" and "wise man" throughout the universe. We get that word from you, you know. But if you carry on the way you are, what might that word come to mean? To the people of the Gamma Forests, the word "doctor" means "mighty warrior". How far you've come. And now they've taken a child. The child of your best friends. And they're going to turn her into a weapon, just to bring you down. And all this, my love... in fear of you.

RRiver

Those reports of the sunspots and the solar flares, they're wrong. It's not the Sun, it's you. The sky is full of a million million voices saying, "Yes, of course we'll help." You've touched so many lives, saved so many people, did you think when your time came you'd really have to do more than just ask? You've decided that the universe is better off without you. But the universe doesn't agree.

River, no one can help me. A fixed point has been altered. Time is disintegrating.

RRiver

I can't let you die!

I have to die!

RRiver

Shut up! I can't let you die — without knowing you are loved — by so many, and so much — and by no one more than me.

River, you and I know what this means. We are Ground Zero of an explosion that will engulf all reality. Billions on billions will suffer and die.

RRiver

I'll suffer, if I have to kill you.

More than every living thing in the universe?

RRiver

Yes.

That gravestone, Rory's, there's room for one more name, isn't there?

What are you talking about? Back away from the Angel. Come back to the TARDIS. We'll figure something out.

The Angel – would it send me back to the same time, to him?

I don't know. Nobody knows.

But it's my best shot, yeah?

No!

RRiver

Doctor, shut up! Yes! Yes, it is!

Amy...

Well, then. I just have to blink, right?

No!

It'll be fine. I know it will. I'll- I'll- I’ll be with him, like I should be. Me and Rory together. [She pauses] Melody?

Stop it! Just- Just stop it!

[River comes forward and stands behind Amy, taking her hand]

[Crying] You look after him, and you be a good girl, and you look after him. [River kisses her hand]

You are creating fixed time. I will never be able to see you again!

[Sobbing harder] I'll be fine. I'll be with him.

[Also crying now] Amy, please, just come back into the TARDIS. Come along, Pond, please.

Raggedy man, [Amy turns to look the Doctor in the eye] goodbye!

[Amy vanishes as she is sent to the past by the angel. Amy's name appears alongside Rory's on the gravestone]

[Sobbing] No!

River... They were your parents. Sorry. I didn't even think.

RRiver

Doesn't matter.

Course it matters.

RRiver

What matters is this: Doctor, don't travel alone.

Travel with me, then.

RRiver

Whenever and wherever you want. But not all the time! One psychopath per TARDIS, don't you think?

That's not darkness down those tunnels. This is not a shadow. It's a swarm, a man-eating swarm. [throws a chicken leg into the shadow, which is immediately reduced to mere bone] The piranhas of the air. The Vashta Nerada. Literally, "the shadows that melt the flesh". Most planets have them, but usually in small clusters. I've never seen an infestation on this scale, or this aggressive.

What do you mean, most planets? Not Earth?

[nodding] Mmm, Earth. And a billion other worlds. Where there's meat, there's Vashta Nerada. You can see them sometimes, if you look. The dust in sunbeams.

[unnerved, in denial] If... they were on Earth, we'd know.

Nah. Normally they live on roadkill. But sometimes people go missing. Not everyone comes back out of the dark.

RSRiver Song

Every shadow?

No. But any shadow.

RSRiver Song

So what do we do?

Daleks, aim for the eyestalk. Sontarans, back of the neck. Vashta Nerada? Run. Just run.

River Song [speaking to the handcuffed Doctor, as she realizes she must sacrifice her own life to keep the Doctor from sacrificing his]: Funny thing is, this means you've always known how I was going to die. All the time we've been together, you knew I was coming here. The last time I saw you, the real you — the future you, I mean — you turned up on my doorstep, with a new haircut and a suit. You took me to Darillium to see the singing towers. Oh, what a night that was! The towers sang, and you cried. You wouldn't tell me why, but I suppose you knew it was time. My time. Time to come to the Library. You even gave me your screwdriver; that should've been a clue. [The Doctor tries unsuccessfully to reach their sonic screwdrivers] There's nothing you can do.

You can let me do this!

RSRiver Song

If you die here, it'll mean I've never met you!

Time can be rewritten!

RSRiver Song

Not those times. Not one line! Don't you dare! It's OK. It's OK, it's not over for you. You'll see me again. You've got all of that to come. You and me, time and space. You watch us run!

[River starts to weep.]

River, you know my name. You whispered my name in my ear! There's only one reason I would ever tell anyone my name. There's only one time I could...

RSRiver Song

[Smiling sweetly at the Doctor as the countdown reaches zero] Hush, now... Spoilers!

RSRiver Song

[Voice-over, as the Doctor and Donna walk away] When you run with the Doctor, it feels like it'll never end. But however hard you try you can't run forever. Everybody knows that everybody dies and nobody knows it like the Doctor. But I do think that all the skies of all the worlds might just turn dark if he ever, for one moment, accepts it.

[The Doctor runs back and picks up River's sonic screwdriver]

Why? Why would I give her my screwdriver? Why would I do that? The thing is, future me had years to think about it. All those years to think of a way to save her, and what he did was give her a screwdriver! Why would I do that?! [peels back a panel to reveal a set of green lights like on the suits, realizing why his future self has given River the screwdriver] Oh, oh, oh! Look at that! I'm very good!

What have you done?

Saved her! [runs with River's consciousness in the screwdriver] Stay with me! You can do it! Stay with me! Come on!! You and me, one last run!

Is it sad?

RRiver

Why would a diary be sad?

I don't know, it's just that… you look sad.

RRiver

It's nearly full.

So?

RRiver

The man who gave me this was the sort of man who'd know exactly how long a diary you were going to need.

He sounds awful.

RRiver

I suppose he is. I've never really thought about it.

Not somebody special then?

RRiver

No. But terribly useful every now and then.

RRiver

When you love the Doctor, it's like loving the stars themselves. You don't expect a sunset to admire you back. And if I happen to find myself in danger, let me tell you, the Doctor is not stupid enough, or sentimental enough, and he is certainly not in love enough to find himself standing in it with me! [She catches the Doctor's gaze, and the two look into each other's eyes]

Hello, sweetie.

RRiver

You are so doing those roots.

What, the roots of the sunset?

RRiver

Don't you dare.

I'll have to check with the stars themselves.

RRiver

Oh shut up! I was just keeping them talking 'til it kicks off!

[The ship is struck by a meteor strike that River seemingly magically predicted.]

FFlemming

How could you know?!

RRiver

I'm an archaeologist from the future. I dug you up.

[At the Singing Towers of Darillium]

Times end, River, because they have to. Because there's no such thing as happy ever after. It's just a lie we tell ourselves because the truth is so hard.

RRiver

No, Doctor. You're wrong. Happy ever after doesn't mean forever. It just means time. A little time. But that's not the sort of thing you could ever understand, is it?

Mmm. What do you think of the towers?

RRiver

I love them.

Then why are you ignoring them?

RRiver

They're ignoring me. But, then, you can't expect a monolith to love you back.

No, you can't. They've been there for millions of years, through storms and floods and wars and… time. Nobody really understands where the music comes from. It's probably something to do with the precise positions, the distance between both towers. Even the locals aren't sure. All anyone will ever tell you is that when the wind stands fair and the night is perfect… when you least expect it… but always… when you need it the most… there is a song.

RRiver

So, assuming tonight is all we have left…

I didn't say that.

RRiver

How long… is a night on Darillium?

24 years.

RRiver

[she gasps] I hate you.

No, you don't.
