Scenes with Narrator 116
Shunted, and on my own branch too! It's a disgrace!
I'm sorry, I was a special.
An important passenger arrived just as you left. He ordered a special train and Duck let me take it. We had a splendid run but...
But it can make an engine nervous not to know the line.
Exactly! You're such an expert.
N Narrator
This made Thomas feel much better. He couldn't be cross anymore, and instead began telling Stepney all about his branch line.
[after a cricket ball flies into one of Stepney's trucks]
N Narrator
But Stepney didn't hear them.
[to his trucks] Come along! Come along!
P Players
Our one and only ball!
Good evening, you three! Aren't we all a fine sight?
Sorry we can't stop. The Fat Controller wants us all together at the station.
D Driver
The Fat Controller has a plan. Come on.
N Narrator
So they followed the other engines to the Big Sheds at the end of the line. An excited chorus of whistles surrounded the area.
SILENCE! I have an important letter to read from a little girl who is 5 years old.
L Letter
Dear Thomas and all the engines, please can I meet you? My friends say they would like to meet you, too. You can come to my house for tea, but my mom says there aren't any railway tracks to my house. Can you come to the station instead? Thank you very much!
It seems that there are many girls and boys who would like to meet you. Therefore, we are all going to the big city far away!
Silence! Other engines will be working here while you're away, so please show them what to do.
N Narrator
The engines wondered who would pull the Royal Train.
I'm too old to pull important trains.
He'll choose me, of course.
You?! You can't climb hills! He'll ask me to pull the train, and I'll have a new coat of paint!
[cut to the following day]
N Narrator
Then, the rain came. Henry's driver and fireman covered up their cab to keep dry. A painter was on a ladder above the line. Henry's smoke blew high into the air. The painter couldn't see. Both he and the paint pot fell all over Henry. Paint went everywhere. Poor Henry.
P Painter
Well, you're not a pretty picture!
N Narrator
The Fat Controller spoke next.
You look like an iced cake, Henry. That won't do for the Royal Train. I must make other arrangements.
[after Cranky has saved the engines in the shed]
Oh, thank you! What would I have done without you?
Well, I had to be rescued before I could help you, but I never thought it would be a couple of b-b- "Small engines". Thank you, I'll never be rude again. However, you two mites are in my way, so move over!
Pah! He's back to bugging us! [lurches backward]
Don't move! You're still attached to Cranky!
N Narrator
But it was too late.
[Cranky falls again]
Hey you down there. Your jobs done now. These lorries are taking over. One of them wants to talk to you.
N Narrator
The lorry was very rude.
L2 Lorry 2
What's that steaming lump of scrap iron doing here? Be off with you!
Scrap iron? Steaming scrap iron? Pah!
What's this lump of steaming scrap iron?
L2 Lorry 2
I'll be back. So you can wipe that silly smile off your smokebox.
Ha! [blows steam at him loudly]
N Narrator
Then Butch the Breakdown Vehicle arrived. He was towing the lorry from the flour mill.
TS Toby's Driver
What happened?
TT Tow truck man
He was overloaded with flour, and he broke down.
Not very useful now are you? (Michael Angelis: Said Toby.)
N Narrator
Then James whistled excitedly.
They're bringing in the third lorry on a barge. What happened to that one?
TT Tow truck man
The stupid lorry was reversing and fell straight into the sea.
N Narrator
Later Thomas arrived. He looked at the 3 lorries and laughed.
[looks at the damaged lorries] Well, well, well. The brothers grim. Smashed, broken, and sunk!
N Narrator
George had been found out by the Fat Controller and punished. He looked miserable.
Now we'll get some peace at last.
I want to get rolling again, but I've got to wait a whole week 'til I do.
And then you'll be just as rude as ever, eh, George?
N Narrator
I hope not, don't you?
['Arry and Bert approach Stepney]
A 'Arry
Got you this time, Stepney! You'll make very fine scrap, indeed. Buffer him, Bert!
[Bert does so, and he and Arry take him to the smelter shed]
N Narrator
The diesels took him to the large smelter shed.
A 'Arry
Bye-bye, Stepney! [laugh]
N Narrator
Stepney looked up. Above him was a huge grabber.
This engine's not for scrapping!
N Narrator
The grabber wasn't listening. But just as it was about to grab hold of him, it stopped. There stood The Fat Controller.
It's a good thing I've chosen to visit this yard tonight. Saving you from scrap is becoming a habit, Stepney. Please, stop it!
Yes, Sir! But I have learned something.
There's no place like home!
And that's exactly where you're going now.
I only need one engine. Not 2.
I am only one engine, Sir. And I would like to work with Duck.
N Narrator
The Fat Controller was surprised, but agreed.
Won't you miss one another? I know I'd miss Annie and Clarabel.
I'll work better on my own!
Henry has had an accident and have been sent for repairs. There are no other engines available. So Diesel will help until Henry returns.
N Narrator
But they weren't happy. The engines didn't like Diesel he was always being rude and always showing off.
I hope Henry's mended soon.
He moves more trucks than three Diesels put together.
Trucks are no one's friends.
Bitter cold, bitter cold, bitter cold. Still, I'll soon be back in my nice, dry shed.
N Narrator
But suddenly, Toby's driver applied the brakes. He could see the farmer standing on a knee deep in snow. He was waving a red flag.
My phone lines are down. All the roads are blocked. And my sheep have just started lambing. They're trapped on the hillsides, cut off by the snow.
I need a vet as quickly as possible.
D Driver
We'll stop at the next signalbox. I'll phone the vet from there.
[after the whistle-less Duncan has returned with the headmaster, who is still playing his organ]
Look! It's Duncan the musical engine!
You really did well to deliver your goods without a whistle.
Absolutely, even though an engine's not an engine without a whistle. [whistles]
HH Headmaster Hastings
Or an organ. ["toots" the organ]
N Narrator
And all the engines tooted back, except Duncan, who just grinned.
C Children
Three cheers for Thomas, the #1 engine!
But I still won the race.
N Narrator
Thomas just peeped happily.
[having heard of Thomas' recent troubles] Thomas, you have caused confusion and delay. [tells Thomas what happened] Don't worry. All you need is some help.
Gordon has said a really useful engine never needs help.
[laughs] Pah! I'm always helping Gordon up the Hill!
N Narrator
Gordon was very embarrassed.
Percy and Edward, you are to help Thomas.
