[surprised after he discovers a statue of Proteus, sitting on rusty old flatbed] Oh, my! Look! It's a statue of Proteus! It looks very old. [gets an idea; thoughtfully] No one must see the statue before the show. It will be my wonderful surprise, and I will be the star of the show! [to the farm workers] Please, can you cover this statue? I'll be back to collect it soon.
[reminding Duncan, Mighty Mac and Freddie as they pass by] When you come back, please don't take the shortcut. There's something blocking the track.

What do you mean by leaving me behind?
I'm sorry, Refreshment Lady, but Henry said he might leave without us!
Then, the refreshment lady laughed.
You silly engine! Henry was teasing you! He wouldn't have gone without our passengers. He's a guaranteed connection!
Well! Where's that Henry?!
But Henry had chortled away.
I'm sorry about your accident. I always stand well back. Trucks don't like me.
Why didn't you warn me?!
I didn't think.
You never do. You can start thinking now while you're doing Peter Sam's work as well as your own. That'll teach you to pretend you are ill.
Sir Handel did start thinking... about Gordon.
[without his whistle] I can't run on the tracks without my whistle. That would be too dangerous.
An engine is not an engine without a whistle.
[after the whistle-less Duncan has returned with the headmaster, who is still playing his organ]
Look! It's Duncan the musical engine!
Let's whistle along!
Toot Toot!
You really did well to deliver your goods without a whistle.
Did you think so?
Absolutely, even though an engine's not an engine without a whistle. [whistles]
Or an organ. ["toots" the organ]
And all the engines tooted back, except Duncan, who just grinned.
The refreshment lady needs another place for another tea room.
I can find her a beautiful place.
I knew it. It'll be a piece of cake.
Tea rooms don't leave in cakes.
It's just my way of saying it would be fun and easy to find the right place.
[looks at the derailed coach] Driver said this shed is useless now.
It's not a shed. It's an old railway coach.
[hearing Rusty's horn] What was that wonderful sound?
That was Rusty. He thinks his horn is special. But we don't.
Well, I think it's special.
Rusty, the brass band are ready for their tour of the hills.
Yes, sir.
Listen, Thomas. Skarloey is telling a story from the hills.
Long, long ago, there was an old engine called Proteus. His lamp was so bright you could see it from miles around. Proteus said it was a magic lamp. He promised that if any engine ever found the lamp, their wishes would come true.
How would you know it was Proteus' lamp?
First, you feel a rush of wind whenever the lamp is near, then you'll hear a strange creaking sound. And finally, you'll see it flicker on and off, off and on.
I don't believe there's a magic lamp!
Why have you stopped, Sir Handel?
I have a problem. It happens when I go up hills. I start to rattle and rock, and then I have to stop. Could you help me up the hill?
Of course I can!
Why are you so excited?
Can't tell you.
[excited] Thomas is collecting the famous storyteller, Mary Marvel! She is going to read at a special show! [Freddie, Mighty Mac and Duncan all whistle in excitement] I hope she tells stories about Proteus.
[showing up and gives all the engines special jobs] There is a lot to do. Please be back in good time for Miss Marvel.
Why didn't you find me earlier?
Because Mr. Percival/the Thin Controller said not to bother you until your visit.
Bother me? It's my job to fix really useful engines in trouble, and it makes me very happy! [chuckles] Puff with me.
