There's a flood coming. You keep your head above water any way you can. You get south of that border and you cling to the highest branch you can find, and you survive. If you have to hurt people, God won't judge you. Don't think of them as human beings. Think of them as Americans.
Perfect is the enemy of good, Lucy.
What does it do to their brains?
Tidies things up a bit. Cleans the memory of the horrors they've experienced. This dial controls how much amnesia they have. And the mainframe implants new ideas in their head. Turning these Wastelanders into well-meaning, good people.
I'm shutting this whole thing down and bringing you home. How do I do that?
Once the procedure's done, it's irreversible.
Fine. How do I stop you from making more?
Well, we have to destroy the mainframe which programs the boxes, and that's in the basement.
How do I get there?
It's a bit of a hike. Let's take the golf cart.
What's a golf cart?
[amused] Aw. Lucy, this is gonna be fun!
I really wish we'd had a normal life, Sugarbomb.
We did, Dad. You wrecked it.
You know, the Legion is still out there.
I know.
They're gonna hurt a lot of people.
Yes.
And with what you've created, you could stop them.
We could stop them, Lucy.
Where are we going?
Lucky 38.
Then we're going in the wrong direction. Vegas is that way.
You wanna save the girl, you're gonna have to get into an impenetrable Vault. Same Vault my family's in. To get there, you're gonna have to cross the Strip. You wanna cross the Strip, you're gonna have to kill a pack of Deathclaws. We need to kit up.
So Lucy's in Las Vegas?
I can see why the two of you got along so well.
Why's that?
Cuz you ask a lot of goddamn questions.
This [the Cold Fusion diode] is for Lucy. She's a good person. She'll do the right thing with it.
I know you're a good person. And I know you're trying to do the right thing. I want to believe in people like you, that fight for all the right things, but you don't make it easy. I saw you at the VA meeting last week. Why can't good people like you learn to sell it better?
CDCongresswoman Diane Welch
I don't know. How's that worked in your experience?
They're delivering the most powerful technology in the world to the most powerful man in the world. Robert House wants the diode so he can live forever. And Vaul-Tec gets the bombs in exchange. And when they do that...
They'll be the only ones left. And that's what they want.
I know how's being transported. If I could deliver it to you, I'll need assurances. No offense, but...
No, I get it. I wouldn't give it to me either. But if it helps, two hours ago an unmarked government plane landed at McCarran Airport. The President of the United States is in Las Vegas. How would you feel about giving it directly to him?
You can get me a meeting with the President?
Yes.
That would work.
You give him the diode, and we can put an end to 25 years of Resource Wars tonight.
You wanna give that thing to a good person so they can save the world. I understand that. But in order to save that good person, you're gonna have to give it to a really bad person.
In all my years, I ain't never seen but one person come out on top in Vegas. We gotta do it like he did.
And what's that exactly?
[The Ghoul lowers a curtain, revealing a full set of NCR Power Armor]
Rig the game.
You're so much like how I remember you. We were scared of you. But I sometimes forget how much I learned in the time you were still under.
Whatever you're up to, I want no part of it. I just want these people to live in peace.
The deal was for the water, Betty. I can't speak for the future. That's bigger than us.
