Scenes with Thomas 197
T Thomas
[watches the hopper load coal into Percy's trucks] Careful. Watch out with those silly trucks.
T Thomas
And by the way, those buffers don't look very safe to me.
[Percy accidentally hits said buffers; the last load of coal pours down on Thomas]
The last load poured down.
T Thomas
HELP! I'M CHOKING! GET ME OUT!
Percy was worried, but he couldn't help laughing. Thomas' smart blue paint was covered in coal dust, from smoke-box to bunker.
Ha-ha! You don't look really useful now, Thomas. You look really disgraceful.
T Thomas
I'm not disgraceful. You did that on purpose. Get me out!
I'm going to the scrap yard today.
T Thomas
What, already? You're not that old.
Edward is impossible. He clanks about like a lot of old iron, and he is so slow, he makes us wait.
Thomas and Percy were indignant.
T Thomas
Why, Edward could beat you in a race any day.
Really? I should like to see him do it.
T Thomas
Now I understand how useful a traction engine can be.
The coaches were full of children. Trevor gave them rides along the harbor. He liked this best of all.
T Thomas
Time's time. Why should I keep my passengers waiting while Henry and James dawdle about all day on viaducts?
Don't blame me. If we hurried across the viaduct, it might collapse, and then, you'd have no passengers at all. What would you do then?
T Thomas
Run my train on time, for one thing.
[Bertie's radiator is overheating]
T Thomas
What's the matter? You should be at the station now. You're late.
I feel dreadful. All upset inside! And driver says he can't make me better. Thank goodness you're late, too. Can you take my passengers, please? They'll never get home, otherwise.
[firmly] You are a very naughty engine.
T Thomas
[with guilt] I know, Sir. I'm sorry, Sir.
Thomas' voice was muffled behind his bush.
[calmly] You must go to the works and have your front mended. It will be a long job.
Meanwhile, a diesel rail car will do your work.
T Thomas
A-A-A d-diesel, Sir?
Yes, Thomas. Diesels always stay in their sheds till they are wanted. Diesels never gallivant off to breakfast in stationmasters' houses.
[in Percy's story, a ghost engine runs across the island]
And every year, on the date of the accident, it runs again as a warning to others, plunging into the gap, shrieking like a lost soul!
[cut back to the quarry]
T Thomas
Percy, what are you talking about?
The ghost train. Driver saw it last night.
He didn't say. Oh, it makes my wheels wobble to think of it!
T Thomas
Ha! You're just a silly little engine. I'm not scared!
T Thomas
Poor engine! Botheration! That means I'll be late!
They've cleared the line for you, but there's something worse!
T Thomas
Out with it, Toby! I can't wait all evening!
I've just seen something! [stutters] It looked like Percy's ghost! It said it was coming here to warn us!
T Thomas
Ha! Who cares?! Don't be frightened, Toby. I'll take care of you.
[Percy creeps up behind the sheds]
[imitates a ghost] Peep! Peep! Pip-Pip-Pip-PEEP! Let me in! Let me in!
No! No! Not by the smoke on my chimney-chim-chim!
I'll chuff, and I'll puff, and I'll break your door in!
[the doors slowly open]
[whistles as if he were a ghost] WHEESH!
Percy gave a ghostly whistle.
Don't be frightened, Thomas. It's only me!
T Thomas
Your ugly fizz is enough to frighten everyone. You're like...
T Thomas
A green caterpillar with red stripes. You crawl like one, too.
T Thomas
Who's been late every afternoon this week?
T Thomas
I can't help that. Time's time, and the Fat Controller relies on me to keep it. I can't if you crawl in the hay until all hours.
Green caterpillar, indeed!
[arrives at the station, covered in hay] Sorry I'm late!
T Thomas
Look what's crawled out of the hay.
T Thomas
Talk about hairy caterpillars. It's worth being late to have seen you.
Hush! I can hear something.
Och! It's Thomas! Come on! The poor wee engine must be frozen to the frames in there!
T Thomas
[tired of the blizzard] All I want is a warm boiler. Fire lighter knows that. He's late!
He's not late. This weather woke us up early.
Gusts of wind swirled around the shed, tossing flakes of snow towards Thomas. Then they swooshed around Percy, too.
Why don't we talk about something else?
T Thomas
Yes, like how silly we'll look when our funnels turn into icicles.
That's not funny. Maybe we'll stop feeling cold if we talk about warm things, like sunshine and steam.
T Thomas
And fire lighters.
[pictures himself in a scarf] Scarves!
T Thomas
Scarves?! That's what you need, Percy. A woolly scarf around your funnel.
Good riddance! Chattering all night. Who is he, anyway?
T Thomas
Duck told you, he's famous.
As famous as me? Nonsense!
T Thomas
He's famouser than you. He went 100 miles an hour before you were even thought of.
Ha! So he says! But I didn't like his looks. He's got no dome! Never trust domeless engines. They're not respectable. I never boast, but I'd say 100 miles an hour would be easy for me. Goodbye!
[after the signal drops] Hurry up, Thomas! If you're late, the Fat Controller may get a new engine to replace you.
T Thomas
He would never do that.
