(after taking a punch from Anissa, and surviving without any major injury) Last time that hurt a lot more.
S1 E15Unfinished Business
We're not our bodies. We're the decisions we make. The lives we change, the people we love... or who love us. I don't need to forget that. And neither do you.
Who are you, and what do you want?!
He made me call you! He said he'd hurt us if we didn't! Mark--
[grabs her throat] He was talking to me.
Let them go! Now!
Did you know your identity is public in almost half of the realities you exist in? So careless.
I don't know why you're here... but I'm warning you--
You...! You really don't remember who I am. Let me help: when we met before, you hadn't done this to me!
Oh God! You're that guy.
[enraged] "That guy"? That's all you remember of me?! That I was "that guy"?! I am Angstrom Levy, and you made me into a monster!
I didn't do anything to you! Your machine blew up!
YOU DID THIS! [tosses Debbie and Oliver aside, making the latter scream in fear] I was gonna save the world! All of them!
You need help. Let me just--
I HAD HELP! I had the best doctors in a dozen dimensions. They saved my life, rebuilt my body, but even they couldn't fix THIS! So now, I'll always have a reminder of you, and what you did. [glances back at Debbie and Oliver; Invincible clenches his fist] Oh, I agree. [smirking] Come get me.
[Invincible finds himself in a dimension with intelligent, talking dinosaurs.]
My word! How is this possible?
It's just the damnedest thing. I-If I wasn't looking right at it...
I thought sapiens were extinct. I was but a hatchling when I last tasted their succulent flesh.
Ooh, I want a taste! We can share.
[growls and headbutts him] I smelled it first, it's mine!
Stay back! No one's eating me.
[gasps] Egads, it speaks!
I've never heard tell of a talking sapien.
I don't care if it sings - I only care how it tastes!
[headbutts him] Back, you brute! If it talks, it thinks.
[The first dinosaur lunges at Invincible, who flies out of reach]
Hey!
[gasps] It flies too! Its wings must be invisible.
More to eat! I want my taste!
[Invincible has just entered Agent Spider's dimension and accidentally run down the supervillain he was fighting.]
Ohoho! Talk about your bad luck, Prof. Ock!
Oh... shit, are you okay? I didn't mean to--
Hey, thanks, pal! Now let's get this guy webbed up.
What? No, are you...? Wait, are you trying to hurt this old man?
Ugh. Look, I saw the portal. I know you're from another dimension -- got way too much experience with that. Especially lately. So, uh, trust me: I'm the good guy here, and Mr. Mechanical Arms is not.
Well, you got glowing red eyes, man! How am I supposed to--?
[Ock grabs Invincible]
Oh! Toldja.
You said you wouldn't hurt us.
No, I said you were safe! As long as your son dies, like he deserves to.
Stop this. Please.
You think you're innocent in all this? In so many other dimensions, you join your husband and son when they slaughter millions and make the Earth burn! You're a traitor to your own kind! Your family's legacy is blood! [smears some of his own onto her face]
No. Not me. I raised the boy who defied his father and saved this planet! From what you say, these worlds are extremely different. I know the son I raised, and he is no killer!
You sure about that?
You make it sound like this is the one world where Mark is good, and you're the one who's bad.
What?
Oh! That's why you're so angry! Because you turned out rotten here, and Mark is the hero for once!
[snarls and grabs her by the throat again] YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING! [throws her into a table, breaking it in half; Oliver cries again]
Oliver! [smacks Levy's face with an ornament]
[grabbing her arm] I'M... NOT... THE VILLAIN! [breaks her arm brutally] I'M TRYING TO SAVE THE WORLD! YOUR SON IS THE MONSTER!
[as Oliver continues crying] Oliver... Ol-- It's... it's... it's okay... I'm, I'm okay... I'm okay--
Your attack accomplished nothing. [grabs Oliver by the leg] I'm going to make your son hurt. I'm gonna make YOU hurt! I'm even gonna make this child hurt.
No, I mean... You're a man... who dresses like a bat... and your name is... Well, yeah-- I mean, like... don't you think that's kinda lazy?
Remember those doctors I told you about? The ones who rebuilt my body? They also improved it! Why do you think I sent you across the multiverse, huh?! Why do you think I softened you up?! I don't want you to die in some random dimension! I wanna do it myself! Did you think anything less than killing you with my bare hands would satisfy me?!
STOP!
[chuckling] No. This doesn't end until you and your family are dead.
STOP... THREATENING... MY FAMILY! [starts relentlessly striking Levy] You have NO idea what I've been through! How much I've been HOLDING BACK! [sends him slamming into the ground, where he pins him down and starts beating him into a bloody mess] I'LL NEVER LET... ANYONE... EVER... EVER... HURT MY FAMILY! [he screams in rage while he delivers a last, earth-shaking blow, seemingly killing Levy. Mark starts panting and widens his eyes in horror of what he’s done] ...Again. [gags and shouts. He starts sobbing] I thought you were... I thought... I thought you were stronger.
Oh God, oh God, oh God... I had to. I didn't have a choice. I had to kill him. He tried to kill me, he was gonna kill my Mom and my brother. He made me do it. It was an accident, but he made me do it! I didn't wanna kill him! I didn't-- I had to! I had no other choice! I lost control. I wanted to kill him... What does that make me? I thought he was stronger! He told me he was stronger! ...I wanted to kill him, but I didn't know if I could! Oh, God...!
Just keep on ignoring the fact that you killed someone. That's helping you keep it together. Although I don't think talking to yourself is the best thing right now, but it's not like you got anyone else to talk to, right? So inside your head, outside your head, what's the difference?
Mark, look at me. If the bad guys are dead, and the good guys are alive, that's a good day.
How do you know the difference?
Well, the bad guys are usually the ones who break people's arms.
[talking with Nolan telepathically] We are on the same side now.
No... we're not.
You turned against the Empire. Mark told me all about it.
You... you saw Mark?
Yes, on Earth. I came to enlist him in the Coalition's fight against your old pals. But it seems you beat me to it.
Leave him out of this, this isn't his fight. Let the boy have a moment of peace. Let me pay for what I did.
Yeah, don't worry, that's gonna happen. I've heard the chatter in here. They're gonna execute you, bro.
They are, yes.
Most people would be more worried about that.
I'm not a Viltrumite anymore, not really. I feel shame and regret for my actions. I see the suffering of lesser beings, and it... upsets me, deeply.
You say that like it's a bad thing.
What I did on Earth... the pain and destruction I caused was immeasurable. What I did to those people... what I did to my son...
Yeah, and your people are doing that on a thousand different planets, right now. But you can help us stop them.
I deserve death.
[exasperated] Oh, God!
And yet...
What? What is it?
[speaking aloud] I think... I miss my wife.
(sighs frustrated before Cecil appears before him, startling him) Whoah! Hey! Uh, we have these things called "doors" that normal people use all the time. You should try them.
We also have these things called Viltrumites. You should try winning a fight against them sometime.
Okay, too... too soon, Cecil. Also, how much does it cost every time you like teleport? Isn't that taxpayer money?
Do you know the gross economic output of Lichtenstein?
Not even a little.
More than that.
Uh... okay, well that seems really irresponsible-
(slams his hands on the table) It's been months, Mark! Months since 2000 retirees got their vacation ruined and you got your ass kicked by some second cousin of your dad's who dropped in to prove a point.
Hey-
That point being that she could kick your ass without breaking a sweat.
That's not nice.
Not only that, she promised Mr. Ten Times worse was on his way. So, what exactly have you been doing to prepare? There's only eight billion people counting on you.
Hey, I've- I've been busy!
Busy doing what exactly?
Well, I've been busy... (montage plays) Writing, designing, storyboarding, voice acting, key-posing-
(interrupting) Hey, hey, hey. No, no, no, no. Stop! I'm not falling for that shit. Who do you think I am? Some pickle-hating one-eyed rube from planet-just-let-the-Viltrumites-win?
I don't... think that. What?
No, I bet you don't. And don't even get me started on your little four month vacation right in the middle of things. We all sure loved that. Do you have mayonnaise?
Okay, it was more like... three and a half-
This is life or death, Mark. People are counting on you to live up your obligations. So what exactly are you doing to get ready for what's coming?
I'm... uh... You know I-I'm... stuff.
(facepalms) Yeah, that's what I was worried about. And why I shouldn't leave a nineteen-year-old in charge of Earth's security. All right, we're taking over your training.
Training? What training?
"What training?" Okay, how about... (small Chibi scenes appear) Weightlifting. Cardio. Speed. Damage resistance. Flexibility. Battle tactics. Reactions. And punctuality.
That's... so much stuff. Okay, when is... when is this all gonna start?
(sighs) I thought you'd never ask.
C'mon-
We're a top secret organization, Mark. And we learn from our mistakes.
But I need to know when to show up!
(sighs) Fine. Lights. (title card is presented with subtitle "NEW SEASON; FEBUARY 6 (NO MID-SEASON BREAK)")
Ah. Much better. Still can't believe I have to exercise.
(As Mark exercises by lifting a mechanized weight)
Over the last 90 days, Mark's speed has increased 65%. His endurance 70%. And his strength, and we checked this wasn't a mistake, 138%. Science team is working on a heavier version.
So, the billion dollar question then, can he beat that Viltrumite woman who made us all shit our pants three months ago?
We think so. But she implied someone much worse was coming.
Which is why we're not stopping here, with Mark or any of our other plans.
Fuck me! Way to make a fellow superhero feel inadequate. That is not leg day.
(Mark stops)
Hey Rex. Yeah, Cecil's got me on a training plan.
Uh, yeah. I can see that. So, um, how much did all this cost, Cecil? Is this why the coffee maker still broken at the Guardians' HQ?
We bought you a new hand, Rex. That wasn't cheap.
Yeah, and this is the third time I've been back trying to get it adjusted. Look, I'm trying to give you the finger right now and I can't.
Oh man, that's your favorite finger.
It's my favorite finger!
It's his favorite finger, Cecil. (shrugs)
