You have an energy.
What?! I'm just waiting for our visitor to arrive so I can run a security clearance on him.
I'm aware. But you came in here hot. On fire. It's making me sweat.
Imagine an area of space where quantum uncertainties collapse so rapidly and randomly that new realities are created. In one such reality, people sing uncontrollably.
A musical reality.
Indeed.
So, what's next? More improbability? Or will we just suddenly poof into bunnies?
I would prefer not to be a bunny, either.
Okay, I need to just say this before it comes out in the form of a 17th-century sea shanty. I know you. I mean not you you. We ... Well, I know you now, but I mean before. In a different time, I met another you.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. I don't love rules, but I'm pretty sure you're about to break a big one.
The other you, He saw the real me. Beyond my name, beyond all that name stands for. He'd never even heard it before. And I liked it. I liked the way he looked at me. Because through his eyes, I could finally see the person I had the potential to be. And it was someone who wasn't burdened by tragedy and darkness. Someone who could find hope and live in that hope. Someone free. Free to feel and take chances and and make connections. But then, he was gone. And with him, that version of myself was gone, too. And that's ... That was what I wanted to say.
Am I anything like the other me?
No. And yes. I like how you look at me, too.
In what way?
Like you really see me.
[The Gorn] do not appear to notice the shuttle.
Because they look like space garbage. Old zombie movie trick.
"Zombie" movie?
Yeah. Dress up like you're dead so the zombies don't notice you. You never seen one?
A zombie, no. A movie, yes. But I will add some to my research.
I would never tell you not to hope. I want Chapel to be alive, too.
Things did not end well between us. We were in a fight. All things that seem trivial in the face of death. I wish to apologize to her.
Sometimes hope is a choice.
Yeah, you've told me that one before.
Maybe I'm saying it 'cause I need to hear it.
Oh, sorry. Where are my manners, eh? Montgomery Scott, at your service. Lieutenant junior grade.
Captain Pike of the U.S.S. Enterprise. This is Lieutenant Noonien-Singh, Dr. M'Benga, Lieutenant Ortegas and Lieutenant Kirk.
That's a lot of lieutenants.
There'll be a quiz.
Are you going to turn me in?
Are you worried I will?
That depends on who I'm talking to right now. My friend or my captain?
Look, I understand why you didn't tell me certain things. I just wish I had known some of them sooner. Officially, there was no mission to Kenfori. So, nothing happened there. I don't have any report to file.
But if you did, hypothetically, what would it say?
That I had a knife to my throat, and you told a story to save my life. That's what happened, wouldn't you agree?
I would.
You're not a monster, Joseph. Just a man. And my friend.
You had quite a bit of cash to lose from the cancellation of The Last Frontier, didn't you?
I had three clients on that show. You do the math. But I didn't kill Tony Hart, though I wish I had.
And why is that?
Because cancelling The Last Frontier is the stupidest thing Tony's ever done. Do you realize how rare a show like this is? TK wanted to give audiences a digestible reflection of their own world through the lens of fantasy. Social commentary with rubber masks and buried metaphors. You know, science fiction.
And the studio did not agree with this vision.
They were more cautious. Didn't want to make waves. The cowards. TK wanted Frontier to take our rotten world with its warts and injustices and give audiences something better.
And all of that with weekly space adventures?
You don't find the idea inspiring? You don't think some kid out there is going to see this show and spend the rest of their life searching the stars? You don't think a person can love a piece of art or music or a story so much that it heals them, shows them parts of themselves they've never even seen before, and give them hope?
You know, of course I do.
A show like this could have gone on forever. Given generations of fans a place to feel seen, to belong, something to believe in again, no matter who they were or where they came from. But you can't do any of that without a season two.
My mom was fond of an expression -- "The dog who caught the car." Now that I've finally latched onto one, I have no idea what to do with it.
On Vulcan, we have a similar expression -- "The Selat who ate its tail." Though I would point out you have a significant leg up over a quadrupedal beast: your human intuition. It has guided us this far; we are all still here. I recommend you keep following it.
I suppose I can direct you from the bridge. Five Vulcans should be more than enough down there.
Four. And one half.
Spock is only half-Vulcan, whereas the four of us...
Are fully Vulcan.
Is that not logical, Spock?
[A long beat.]
Indeed, it is.
Hey, maybe next time, let me in on your plan ahead of time.
I wanted to, but you know, the – the element of surprise.
You didn't have a plan, did you?
I did not, no.
You know, Mr. Scott, we make a pretty good team.
Pull on this finger?
That is correct.
[Doug does so.]
And then, flatulence.
At first, I admit I had some concerns when I heard your name. George Kirk was my First Officer on Constitution during the war.
Yes, I-- I know that, sir.
George is a good man -- a good officer. We shared many pots of coffee during those early campaigns. Do you know why he never got his own ship?
Uh, no, sir. We never talked about it.
Your father is the most fair-minded and diplomatic person I have ever met. But when it came to warfare, it was clear combat was not his strength.
I find that hard to believe, sir.
I'm sorry to be the one to say it. I consider George a friend. Commanding a starship levies a heavy cost; there is no hiding who you are once you sit in that chair. Thankfully, fate has blessed me with yet another Kirk as my First Officer. And based on your service record, you are not your father's son. No fear of battle. You will do just fine.
Five thousand to save a thousand times that many. A math no one should ever have to do. The math of command, with which we are charged.
Sir, as First Officer, my charge is to provide viable options. We can brainstorm alternatives. Probes--
Five million people were killed by that ship. I have no intention of allowing it to escape to claim more innocent families.
Admiral, all I'm saying is that there must be a middle ground.
If war has taught me anything, it's taught me that "the middle ground" is where most people die. Maybe you should go and think about that.
