So you decided not to go to Hollywood?
Maybe James is right, moving pictures are the future. But my future is here. With you.
You really mean that?
With all my heart.
Listen, I know that I'm not a big-time director like Tobias Pope or a fancy producer like James Addison but, there is another role that I think you're perfect for.
What kind of role?
Rosemary LeVeaux, will you be my wife?
If we went with blue, we'd bring out the color in my eyes.
What are we gonna match with my eyes? Something bloodshot?
Where's the young lady you were writin' me about?
That's really why you came here, isn't it?
Can't a mother miss her son?
And here we go.
What is that supposed to mean?
It's an old trick of yours. Asking a question instead of giving me an answer.
Do I do that?
Why don't you both come over to my place for dinner tonight? I'll make shepherd's pie.
You're gonna cook? For my mother?
Is that a problem?
Not at all. And I'll help.
Yeah but, Ma, you can't cook either.
What do you mean by either?
Did I say either? I meant often; neither of you cooks very often.
It's important to be open and honest and lay everything on the table as soon as possible.
We agree on just about everything.
Yep. Two peas in a pod.
We want the same things in life.
Big house.
White picket fence.
Two cats
A model-T.
Five kids
Five ki--what?!
Kids. Children. You know, wee ones.
But, well, children are very noisy, and they come with diapers. Have you seen what's in those diapers?
So you don't want children?! [turns to Pastor Hogan] Would you just give us a second?
Well, children are so...sticky.
I can't believe your mother ditched the bridal shower and crashed the bachelor party.
I signed the papers today.
Jack! What made you decide to do it?
Rip. He said it was getting a little too crowded at the jail, so...Now I just gotta save up enough to build a place. Big kitchen, three, four bedrooms.
That's an awfully big house for one Mountie. Could get lonesome.
Well, there's always Rip.
Good old Rip.
Maybe some chickens.
Sure, you'll need lots of chickens.
A goat!
Goats are good. Anything else?
Any ideas?
A couple.
Like?
Well, you'll need a guestroom for when your mother comes to visit.
Can't forget about Ma.
And a nice feather bed...for your blankie.
My blankie? She didn't tell you about--
She did.
She really needs to stop sharing sooo much.
Do you remember our New Year's resolution? To be patient, to be kind, not to rush, but to take our time.
[regaining consciousness] But not--not to take too much time.
Jack! [She kisses him and Jack groans.] Sorry, sorry!
[pause]
You know, you're starting to sound a lot like Rose--
Bite your tongue!
Lee's place is much too small for both of us!
Yeah. Apparently I am now building Rosemary the largest house in town.
Well, where will you stay in the meantime?
Scene shifts to the row houses.
Right next door. To me.
We're neighbors!
Think you could cover for me for about an hour?...I promised someone we'd pick out a Christmas tree together.
Go ahead. Consider it an early Christmas present. Actually, consider it your only Christmas present!
I thought I might as well get started on the holiday decorating.
Started? You mean you're not finished?
Well, I don't know. The trees look a little bare.
You do realize, of course, that most people have one tree.
We're not most people.
But, two trees? Really?
Not two, silly. There's another one upstairs.
How are Mounties at playing Santa?
Why do you ask?
I need someone to hand out presents after the pageant.
The thing is, I wouldn't want to rob someone more deserving of the honor.
You don't think I can handle it?
I didn't say that.
Well then what are you saying?
I'm just saying that it's a big job for a--
For a what?
Well for a--for a busy businesswoman. And mother. Like yourself. Just a lot of responsibility.
I see. But since you're my business partner, I guess you'd have no problem running the cafe if I take over as mayor for awhile. Unless, of course, it's too much responsibility. For you.
Bring on the apron!
Gentlemen! How fortunate to find you all together!
How can we help you, Miss Thatcher?
I am here on official Christmas business.
Which is?
Well, so far none of the men in this town have stepped forward to play Santa on Christmas Eve. So I don't care how you boys do it. Just find someone to volunteer.
Yes, ma'am.
