“Unfinished Business” · Season 1, Episode 15

In this episode: Dean Winchester (940), Damon Salvatore (715), Sam Winchester (665), Olivia Benson (637), Stephen Fry (608), Narrator (554), Clark Kent (523), Nate (486)

Soon, very soon all of our goals will be achieved. When that happens then everything will be restored to its rightful place. The true power of the Sharingan that belongs to me... Madara Uchiha!

Once again the sky is weeping. Pain, are you...

I know that you're out here all by yourself. So why aren't you running?

Whatever, I can be any number from 1 to 1000. And besides, why would I want to run? If I capture you then I get to see Sasuke!

Why are you so obsessed with my brother? He's just a rogue ninja.

It's true that we may not be blood but he's more of a brother to me than you ever were to him!

Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction isn't it? I never imagined Orochimaru would die. Remember how the three of us would go up against the Third Hokage?

And now flat as a board Tsunade has become the big bosomed Hokage. Ah, times have changed and always will. You were so beautiful back then and now you're a 50 something granny. But it does pain me to see how you hold the memories of your lost friends and loved ones inside that ample bosom of yours. As you know the numbers will continue to rise. Well then we'll just have to keep our emotions in check. The job that we must give to ourselves now is to set examples and help the next generation, Tsunade. To achieve that I'd gladly risk my life. Wisdom is the one thing that makes growing old worth it.

The Akatsuki, if its leader is in control of such a powerful group then how strong is he, I wonder? Jiraiya, this mission of yours will take you right into the lion's den.

Well then I think I better get going.

Please come back alive Jiraiya. If I were to lose you too, then I... I don't know.

Are you saying you'd cry for me? I'm glad to hear it. But I doubt it'll be like the time that Dan died, right?

You idiot!

Say how about you make a bet with me? You gamble everything on me dying. After all Tsunade, you always lose your bets, isn't that right? Promise me if I actually do manage to make it back alive... [acts like he's about to confess his feelings] I'm only kidding Tsunade! You know I'm grateful to you. Rejection makes a man stronger. I believe that you can't call yourself a real man unless you can laugh off all the bad stuff that happens to you, or at least use it as writing material.

So a man's only job is to be strong?

Kind of but that isn't the entire story. Basically the pursuit of happiness isn't for us.

Stop trying to act cool. If there weren't any women around, there would be no rejection either.

Minato Namikaze. Naruto's just like him.

Minato was a once in a generation genius. There won't be another like him ever. He was kind and gentle, yet fierce and full of grit. He became our fourth Hokage in the blink of an eye. Now I've never been a parent before, so I don't know all that much about these kinds of things. But if he'd been my son, I'd be very proud.

Now that you mention it Naruto may not be like him after all. He's not the kind of child you boast about. He's the kind whose mischief you'd try to cover up. No I would say Naruto is more like his mother was.

Wasn't she a kunoichi from the Land of Eddies?

That's right. His personality is exactly like Kushina Uzumaki's.

That's right, I had forgotten her name! She was a chatty red haired little rascal, and she was quite a tomboy as I remember.

She was that, but she grew up to be a real beauty. But Naruto does look a lot like his father.

Yeah when I look at Naruto I see a lot of his father. Although to me it feels as though I'm looking at my very own grandson.

We've seen so many war orphans. It's always so pitiful. They'd be better off if we simply put them out of their misery right now.

Once you've been hurt you learn to hate. But if you hurt another you become hated and you shoulder a sense of guilt. But it is because one understands such pain that generosity towards others becomes second nature. That's what makes us human.

Every chapter reads like one of the numerous legendary exploits you told me about. It's like it's almost autobiographical.

Yeah but it didn't sell at all. Four my next one I think I'll add some spicy elements to pep it up.

The main character here, I thought his determination to never give up was pretty awesome. He's actually quite a lot like you, Sensei.

Yeah, you think so?

So I was thinking. I really hope my soon to be born child can become an amazing Shinobi just like the main character in your book! So that's why I'd like to ask your permission to name my son after him.

You what? Are you sure about this? I mean I randomly came with it while eating ramen.

[enters the room, pregnant] Naruto... I think it's a wonderful name.

Kushina. Wow so would that make me his godfather then? Are you really sure you're sure about this?

You're my sensei Jiraiya. You're a great ninja who possesses true talent. There's no one else like you in the whole world.

Someone has circumvented my rain. From the feel of this chakra, he's very powerful.

Way back then you should have done what Orochimaru suggested. Isn't that what you're thinking now? [flashes back to his words] Back then you saved the three of us from that fate instead. But it's too late now. We wholeheartedly embraced his ideology and we have now made our move.

I have no regrets about letting the three of you live, no matter how this may end. I'm just very sad. The reason I taught you all ninjutsu was to enable you to survive those harsh times. You were all undoubtedly my students and I know the world is a cruel place, but to attack me without even so much as a greeting, well that's just too sad. For a few years after our time together I heard your names mentioned here and there. You made a reputation for yourselves, fighting for hire in a few conflicts, but then...

You know nothing about what happened to us afterward, sensei.

No I don't, that's quite apparent. But why all this stuff with the Akatsuki? What the Akatsuki is doing now is simply wrong!

[arriving] This is what I thought through on my own. And that is that... Jiraiya-sensei.

Well your appearance has changed quite a bit, but those eyes... [flashes back to the Rinnegan's awakening] So I guess you're the one who became Pain... Nagato. It appears you've strayed from the path of goodness. What HAPPENED to you?

NNagato

You don't need to know. After all you're just an outsider.

Nothing happened. Nothing except for the war. Too many people died in this land. All that pain forced me to grow up.

What does that mean?

That even ignorant, foolish children will grow up in the face of pain until their thoughts and beliefs are the same as adults.

But abandoning one's love for his friends and fellow man? Is that really what it means to become an adult?

Oh sensei, you're still merely a man. However I, mired in endless Pain, have matured and become much more than a man.

What are you saying?

Yes, I've grown from a man... to a god. And since I'm a god, all my words and thoughts have become absolute. Poor sensei, you're still human. It's not your fault if you don't understand what I'm saying.

Have you really become that twisted?

Things that I couldn't see when I was human are clear to me now that I'm a god. And being a god, I realize there are things I can do which mortal men can never dream of. Or to put it more simply I have evolved beyond that.

Just what are you planning to do?

At last I'm going to put an end to this senseless war riddled world. This will be my sacred deed.

[as he speaks he flashes back to their past] Don't let your guard down no matter who your opponent is. Nagato, you erred in your decision. I understand. Instead of trying to rule the world through pain, I wish you'd moved past it and used your power to create peace in a positive way. For just a little while there I believed you were the one. Farewell Nagato.

Pain is actually a designation to refer to the six of us as a group.

He's not coming back. That's what I bet him before he left because he knows I never win any of my bets.
