S1 E15Unfinished Business

[opening narration] Is violence born in the heart... or in the mind? If we must kill to protect ourselves, what will that do to our souls?

[closing narration] In the struggle between life and death, sometimes survival is not the only way to win.

[opening narration] In the face of violent crime, the thin line between justice and vengeance can grow ever thinner. But what happens when society becomes as violent as the criminals it seeks to contain?

[closing narration] To those who would corrupt the search for truth... be warned. The sword of justice cuts both ways.

[opening narration] From muskets to sixguns to assault weapons, the pages of our history run red with blood. But which came first, the violent impulse or the weapon which answers its call?

DFDonald Finley

You disappointed me, Cord. I had such high hopes for you.

CVCord van Owen

What are you talking about?

DFDonald Finley

Your kind. Everything about you was so damn perfect.

CVCord van Owen

What? What do you mean, our kind?

DVDana van Owen

He's crazy, Dad. Can't you see that? He's out of his mind.

[Finley briefly morphs his face, revealing himself to be an alien]

DVDana van Owen

Oh my God...!

CVCord van Owen

You came here to destroy us.

DFDonald Finley

What would be the point of that? No. I'm just here looking for some recruits. You know, "a few good men".

CVCord van Owen

Recruits?

DFDonald Finley

I come from a place where war is raging. We're always in need of fresh troops. Mercenaries, "soldiers of fortune", isn't that what you call them? We use these weapons to turn them into the ultimate killing machine. Unfortunately, some species have too high a threshold. The power they gain, the intoxication of it all, still isn't enough for them to overcome their qualms about killing, their horror at their mutation. But Logan, Logan was perfect. He revelled in it. But you? You were the real experiment. My little test of humanity. I needed to find out whether your pathetic little species understood the truth: that compassion is weakness. And like I said, you were a real disappointment.

DVDana van Owen

Why, because you wouldn't murder a man who was already on death's door?

DFDonald Finley

But... I haven't given up entirely. There have got to be more Logans out there.

[closing narration] The path to our own destruction may lie less in the weapons we conceive... than the violence in our hearts.

[opening narration] It is said that man is created in God's image. But what happens when we alter that image? Is our reflection the only thing that changes?

[closing narration] In an age when we are led to believe that we can be anything we want to be, what most eludes us is simply... being ourselves.

[opening narration] Human history is marked by our desire to expand our boundaries. But what happens when our reach exceeds our grasp?

[closing narration] Ultimately, our survival may depend less on our ability to overcome our enemies than the weakness of our own character.

[opening narration] Nothing in our world is more unyielding than the inexorable march of time. But what will happen when man finds a way to manipulate that awesome force?

[closing narration] We have always struggled to control our destiny. But even when we think we've succeeded, fate may have the final word.

[opening narration] It is said that what we behold with our eyes is merely the surface of reality. But if we could see beneath that facade, what would lie within?

[closing narration] Of all the gifts his Maker has bestowed upon man, none is more precious than his ability to love another.
