“The Power of the Daleks” · Season 4, Episode 3

In this episode: Second Doctor (7), Ben Jackson (7), Polly (5), Dalek (1)

(5 November - 10 December 1966) — Although this serial marked the first appearance of the Second Doctor, it was the third serial of the fourth season.

[inside the TARDIS, the Doctor is regenerating. Ben and Polly watch in amazement as the frail old man changes into a younger figure. Ben and Polly discuss the "new" Doctor lying on the floor of the TARDIS] His face, his hair. Look at it!

He's breathing, and the TARDIS seems to be normal.

Ben, what are we going to do? We can't just leave the Doctor there.

What, him? The Doctor?

Well that's who came through the doors - there was no one else outside. Ben, do you remember what he said in the tracking room? Something about "This old body of mine is wearing a bit thin".

So he gets himself a new one?

Then whatever happened, happened in here.

But it's impossible!

Not so long ago we'd have been saying that about a lot of things.

[the Doctor awakens and mutters to himself] Slower. Slower. Concentrate on one thing. One thing. It's over. Hmm, hmm, hmm. It's over.

Doctor?

[the Doctor turns and stumbles over the console. Mutters to himself] The muscles are still a bit tight.

What are we gonna do?

It is the Doctor. I know it is... - I think.

It's not just his face that's changed. He doesn't even act like him!

[The Doctor explains his regeneration.]

The Doctor always wore this. If you are him it should fit... That settles it!

I'd like to see a butterfly fit into a chrysalis case after it spreads its wings.

Then you did change.

Life depends on change, and renewal.

Oh, that's it, you've been renewed, have you?"

Renewed? Have I? That's it, I've been renewed. It's part of the TARDIS. Without it I couldn't survive.

[Ben and Polly follow the Doctor into the capsule and find the cobwebbed Daleks] Polly... Ben... Come in and meet the Daleks.

What?

The Daleks.

If there was a bomb under this floor timed to go off in five minutes, would you ask my permission before you ripped up the floorboards? [Distracted] Ah ha, fruit!

Now, Lesterson's fanatic. The Governor's jealous of his own position. What does that suggest to you?

[the Doctor answers himself]

Dunno. Hadn't thought about it. That all is not well with this colony. Add to that one Dalek!

Oh, blimey, you don't half make mountains, don't you? One Dalek?

[explaining] Yes! All that is needed to wipe out this entire colony.

Lesterson, what have you done? What have you done?

LLesterson

I'll show you. Janley, now!

It recognised the Doctor. It recognised him!

What's the matter, Doctor? Are you all right?

The fools. The stupid fools!

You're scared. What can it do?

Nothing yet.

LLesterson

This creation is called, I understand, a Dalek.

It knew who you were. It sounds ridiculous, but it did.

It knew who I was.

The Dalek knows who you are.

LLesterson

Now, look at it. I have merely given it electrical power, but it is capable of storing it. Moreover, it responds to orders. Turn around. [The Dalek obeys] Move that chair. [The Dalek pushes the chair across the room] Stop. [The Dalek stops] You see? Well, just think what this could do for our mining program, our processing, packaging. Dozens of labour jobs, Governor. It may even supply the end to all this Colony's problems.

Yes, it will end the colony's problems, because it will end the colony!

I am your servant.

LLesterson

It, it spoke! Janley, did you hear it? It can actually talk.

It can do many things, Lesterson. But the thing it does most efficiently is exterminate human beings. It destroys them, without mercy, without conscience. It destroys them. Utterly. Completely. It destroys them.

[Trying to drown out The Doctor] I am your servant. I am your servant. I am your servant. I am your servant. I am your servant.
