MGMaggie Grace
Angry, sarcastic... and stubborn. Maybe you don't have any friends.
Matt
Someone once told me that warriors are meant to be alone. That caring for people would make me weak.
Sounds like he needed to get laid.
Matt
[chuckles] Ha! That actually explains a lot. I mean he was right of course, I let people in, I paid the price. What is this?
Dug those out of storage. You're probably the last one to read them.
Matt
My bible. Alright. I get the hint.
And I get the sense that things are complicated with you and the 'Guy upstairs'
Matt
[laughs] No. Not at all. If anything I'd say where we finally stand with each other. [pauses] There's a man from the land of Uz.
Matt
The Book of Job. The story of God's perfect servant Job. He prayed everyday, falling to his knees on the ground, face in the dirt. Slaughtered 10 goats, one for each of his children, burned them at the altar in God's honour. All of God's soldiers, Job, he was the most loyal.
I know the story Matthew.
Matt
Ah, well then you know what happens next. God murdered all ten of Job's children in cold blood. Scorched every inch of Job's land, lashed at his skin until it was covered in bloody welts. God rained shit and misery on the life of his most perfect servant and still... Job would not curse him. You know what I realised... Job was a pussy. You may say that was me Sister. I suffered willingly. I gave my, er, sweat and blood and skin, without complaint because I too believed that I was God's soldier. ... Well not anymore. I am what I do in the dark now, and bleed only for myself.
[Maggie removes the cross from around her neck and puts it in Matt's hand. He feels it for a moment before chucking it onto the bed]
Matt
You weren't listening.
I heard every spiteful word. You might hate God right now but the feeling is not mutual
Matt
I don't hate Him. I've just seen His true face is all. And for the record, I had friends, I had a life. I-- care about people and I'm choosing to let them believe that I'm gone because I am. I'm not Job. [sniffs] And I know my truth now.
Matt
Well that, in front of this God, I'd rather die as the devil than live as Matt Murdock.
JMJack Murdock (Hallucination)
You're too mad to think straight, and it's gonna get you killed. Mattie, c'mon. Your mother didn't only leave you, she left me too.
Matt
You looking for sympathy? Because that's not happening.
JJack
She left us because we're cursed. Because she knew we got the devil inside!
Matt
So it's my fault.
JJack
Would you be honest with yourself? You put on that mask because it lets you feel alright with who you really are. It lets you hurt people, it makes your feel like it's for something important, [overlapping with Fisk's Hallucination] something good, maybe even for God. But that ain't the truth...
FHFisk Hallucination
And we both know it. You and your father, cut from the same cloth. A corrupt boxer who takes as much satisfaction in inflicting pain as he does money for taking dives. And his son, who's trying to convince himself he's any better than his criminal father. You were born from nothing! You remain nothing!
Well, you have to realize, Karen, that whatever it is that you've done or haven't done, it can still be redeemed.
Yeah, that's nice, but I'm not so sure that I believe that.
Matt
Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end.
Step one, we work together. Step two, we come up with a plan. And step three, we execute that plan.
Matt
That's genius. Come up with that by yourself?
So, I'm still working out the details.
Matt
Are you ready for this? Testifying's not gonna be easy.
I love my job. I love being the good guy. I wanna be on the right side of the line again.
Matt
You didn't love it enough to stop Fisk.
Fisk knows how to make people vulnerable. He got my sister-in-law's health insurance cancelled. He left my family with bills to pay, bills that I had to ta--
Matt
So you take a loan, you sell your house, you figure it out.
Matt
You backed his play, Ray, you moved him into his hotel and you gave him his toys back.
He was giving us information that saved lives--!
Matt
Yeah, while he was taking lives. While he was taking over the city, you knew--
Well, what the hell are you doing?! I thought you were my lawyer!
Matt
I am your lawyer, Ray, but I can't do anything to help you if you don't answer this one simple question -- why didn't you blow the whistle when you watched your boss murder an agent?
Matt
Or when you watched Dex walk in that church? You didn't say a goddamn word when he murdered a priest.
Matt
THEN WHY ARE WE HERE?!
BECAUSE I TOOK THE DAMN BAIT! Because I didn't want my son just to see me as an average federal employee...! I messed up. I destroyed my life. My family's life. And I would do anything to take it all back again.
Matt
Good. You tell that to the DA, and I can help you.
Matt
Last time we spoke, I confronted Father Lantom. I was angry. I'd change that if I could.
If God allowed that, there'd be no future. Just people endlessly rewriting the past.
Matt
Yeah. I think he was trying to tell me that for a long time. His last words were, "Forgive us."
Do you think that's possible?
Matt
He told me something, years ago, when this happened, that I never forgot. See, I was pretty angry at God and bitter towards his world. How could a loving God blind me? Why? Anyway, he told me... God's plan is like a beautiful tapestry. And the tragedy of being human is that we only get to see it from the back. With all the ragged threads and the muddy colors. And we only get a hint at the true beauty that would be revealed if we could see the whole pattern on the other side... as God does.
