[Eedy and her friends watch the news coverage of Ghorman, knowing that Syril was killed on Palmo]
NANews Anchor
Even as Imperial security forces are still assessing casualties, even as our fallen heroes are beginning their final journeys home, questions are being asked about how an insurrection of this scale could be mounted without the aid and support of outside rebel assistance. In the days to come, as the Imperial martyrs of Ghorman are mourned, we're sure to learn a great deal more about what happened here today and the price we'll pay for our own safety.
[Everybody in the Senate foyer stands as Ghorman Ambassador Dasi Oran is hauled off by Imperial Stormtroopers]
DODasi Oran
No warrant! No charges! This is the Senate Chamber, I have every right to be here. Will no one help me? Ghorman is being slaughtered! It's my people today and yours tomorrow! Remember this day! Remember Ghorman! This will be you soon enough. Remember this day!
[Senior Senator Bail Organa has just invoked a Senate rule to allow a Senior Senator to give their time for a privilege speech to another Senior Senator - Mon Mothma]
Fellow Senators, friends, colleagues, allies, adversaries, I stand before you this morning with a heavy heart. I've spent my life in this chamber. I came here as a child, and as I look around me now, I realize I have almost no memories that predate my arrival, and few bonds of affection that cleave so tightly. Through these many years, I believe I have served my constituents honorably and upheld our code of conduct. This chamber is a cauldron of opinions, and we've certainly all had our patience and tempers tested in pursuit of our ideals. Disagree as we might, I am hopeful that those of you who know me will vouch for my credibility in the days to come.
I stand this morning with a difficult message. I believe we are in crisis. The distance between what is said and what is known to be true has become an abyss. Of all the things at risk, the loss of an objective reality is perhaps the most dangerous. The death of truth is the ultimate victory of evil! When truth leaves us, when we let it slip away, when it is ripped from our hands, we become vulnerable to the appetite of whatever monster screams the loudest.
This Chamber's hold on the truth was finally lost on the Ghorman Plaza! What took place yesterday, what happened yesterday on Ghorman, was unprovoked genocide! [the other Senators are incensed at her words] Yes, genocide! And that truth [points back referring to Oran's arrest] has been exiled from this Chamber! And the monster screaming the loudest, the monster we helped create, the monster who will come for us all soon enough, is Emperor Palpatine!!
[Bix leaves behind a video message for Cassian]
My love. You're sleeping now. You look so peaceful. I wanna be brave, but I can't. If I was brave, I would stay and do this in person... but I know you and you'd just talk me around, and I've been thinking about this too long to let that happen. I have to leave. I have to go away. I'm not sure where or for how long, I just know that I can't stay here with you now. I believe what you said. It is a choice. It just can't be me. I can't be the reason you leave here. If you ever gave this up for me, I'd... I'd never forgive myself. We have to win. We have to beat them. And I believe you have purpose in making that happen. I need to believe that. So, I'm choosing for the both of us. I'm choosing the Rebellion. And when it's done, when it's over and we've won, we can do all the things we ever wanted. Everything we'd know we've missed. I'll find you.
[Lonni talks to Luthen about their covers possibly being blown, but Luthen feels Lonni is buying time for ISB tactical teams to arrest them both]
Then there's no time to play games. I need to know what we're talking about. You're not the only one who'll be running. We're in this together. I need details. What are we up against?
LJLonni Jung
The Emperor's energy program is a lie. All of it. The rebellion on Ghorman, it was a front from the start; a cover to strip-mine the planet for some mineral they need. They're not looking for Partisans on Jedha; they need kyber crystals. The crackdowns, the Public Order, the labor camps, Scarif...
LLonni
A weapon. Orson Krennic's been building a secret weapon for over a decade. Colonel Yularen wasn't even told until a month ago!
[Luthen receives Dedra at his antiquities store, where she presents him with something familiar - the N-S9 Starpath he was looking for on Ferrix]
A vintage Imperial Starpath unit. What do you think? A little damaged, perhaps... But I'd say it's held its value. [Luthen breathes deeply] I have dreamt of this. Too many versions to remember. And here you were... all that time, hiding in the shelter of Imperial peace and quiet.
And I've known you all along. Hardly seems fair.
You disgust me. Do you want to know why?
Everything you stand for. Freedom scares you.
"Freedom"? You don't want freedom. You want chaos, chaos for everyone but you. Ruin the galaxy and then run back to your ridiculous wig and little workshop.
The building is surrounded. You're finished.
And you're too late. The Rebellion isn't here anymore. It's flown away. It's everywhere now. There's a whole galaxy out there waiting to disgust you.
And soon, you'll be telling us all about it. [she spots smoke rising from the back room] What have you done? [Luthen turns his back to her] Turn around. [aims blaster] Turn around or be stunned. [sees Luthen's hand holding a Nautolan bleeder he showed her, indicating he stabbed himself before he collapsed] No. No. No, no, no. All units engage. I need a med-team. Now!
[Kleya remembers one day where she and Luthen witnessed a public execution]
When do we start fighting back?
We fight to win. That means we lose. And lose and lose and lose... until we're ready. All you know now is how much you hate. You bank that. You hide that. You keep it alive until you know what to do with it. And when I tell you to move, you move. Move!
[In a holding cell, Director Krennic interrogates Dedra Meero about Lonni Jung and something called Death Star]
When did you give him your code cert?
Excuse me? Jung? My clearances? Never. Why would I do that?
I don't have time for "why." Your motivations are far less pressing than the extent of your betrayal.
If Jung had my cert, then he stole it.
Who told you about Galen Erso?
Several intel bundles were forwarded to my office by mistake. I should have reported it.
Ghorman Mining Schedules?
I have clearance for Ghorman.
What about Orbital Progress Assessments? Eadu Research Journals? We found two years of Jedha Working Group printouts in your files.
I should have reported it...
And I should've pegged you as a scavenger a long time ago.
I didn't read them all. Most of them I never opened.
[walking to go behind Dedra as she tries to keep her composure] But you read enough, didn't you? You and your fringey friend, Supervisor Jung, spent three hours last night logged into [pokes finger onto her scalp] your account. [Dedra gets nervous as Krennic walks to her front] Now shall we take a guess... at what he might have told Luthen Rael? Hmm?
I was searching for Axis. That's all I was ever doing. And I found him. Yes, I'm a scavenger, but I've had to be. There's a Partisan spy mentioned in the Jedha read-outs. A valet for the local Moff. When questioned, he said that he had been recruited by a man with a Fondor Haulcraft full of antiquities. In classic fashion, your team tortured him to death, and that crucial piece of information, rather than being directed my way, was buried, and became something I had to "scavenge" for.
How terribly perplexing. How does one balance such passionate competency with the mindless decision to confront Luthen Rael ON YOUR OWN?!?! If you're not a Rebel spy, you've missed your calling.
Rael's assistant. We think she's his daughter. She wasn't at the gallery. [door opens for ISB officer]
IISB Officer
If you have a moment...
Whatever Jung told Rael, she knows too. It may be days before he's well enough to be questioned, she needs to be found. We need agents at every transit point we can cover-
[holds her face and forces her to sit down] We'll do our best to carry on without you. [leaves cell]
[Supervisor Heert updates Major Partagaz and Director Krennic on his hospital investigation of Kleya Marki]
[referring to closeup hologram of Kleya] Supervisor Heert, you will put this image out as wide and deep and far as it takes until we find her. You'll search every comm and transit point. There will be no horizon to the scope of your inquiry, nor will there be any limit to your effort. Failure will earn you a place in the ever-lengthening ISB death march, are we clear?
SHSupervisor Heert
[stammering nervously] The warrant. To be clear, what's the charge? Sedition? Or murder? All of the above?
She's diseased. She escaped the hospital with an infectious condition that threatens everyone with whom she may come in contact. She must be found before thousands die!
[sarcastically in Heert's ear] There it is. What are you still doing here? [Heert scurries from the room, leaving Partagaz and Krennic alone. Partagaz chuckles to himself]
[scoffs] "Death Star". What a prescient turn of phrase.
I can't protect you, Lio.
You were supposed to be ready by now.
It's a miracle we've kept it quiet this long!
We're moments away! Days! A few more tests, we're there.
[rolls his eyes] Save the sermon for Palpatine.
Indeed. You have a 'plague' to stop, and I was due at Scarif two hours ago. [moves to leave, but stops at the door and glances back at Partagaz]
Best of luck to us both. [Krennic nods and leaves]
[at Luthen's old safehouse, a delirious Kleya tries to talk to Cassian while pacing in the room]
The energy project. Palpatine's energy push. It's a lie... It's a weapon. Th-Th-They're building a weapon - a superweapon. Everything we've been chasing, that's the answer.
Ghorman. Um... Uh, Scarif. Jedha. The obsession with kyber. It's all been part of one big lie. It's all about this weapon.
And you're sure Luthen's dead?
Galen Erso. He's an engineer, there's a research center... Galen Erso, say it.
REPEAT WHAT I'VE TOLD YOU! [tries to jog her memory further] Galen Erso. He... Superweapon. Kyber crystals. Ghorman. This is direct from ISB as of yesterday morning. [pause; sad] Luthen died for this.
We cannot stay here, Kleya.
And go where? Yavin? [scoffs] I know about Yavin. I know all about it. I know what they think of Luthen. That's to be my sanctuary?
We'll be safe there. [Kleya still scoffs] They need to hear this.
Okay, you tell them. Tell them what I just told you.
I'm not leaving you here.
[at Yavin IV, Cassian briefs the Rebel Alliance council about Kleya Marki's revelations but the council doubts him over Luthen's credibility]
STSen Tynnra Pamlo
We're talking about someone who's been a thorn in our side since we began building this Alliance.
Did you know him? Any of you? Does anyone in this room besides Senator Mothma have any idea how much you owe him?
SNSen Nower Jebel
Oh please.
When I say I know Luthen... I mean I know the good and the bad. I know what was wrong with him. I had a front-row seat on that, and I made my choice two years ago to join here and be part of this. But none of that can take away what he did and how hard it was. I don't know if what he was told is true or not, but it's insulting to hear him run down by people who have given a fraction of his sacrifice to this Rebellion!
[at the ISB headquarters, Major Partagaz plays a clip of Karis Nemik's audio diary as Supervisor Lagret enters the conference room]
I'm assuming you've heard it before.
SLSupervisor Lagret
Bits and pieces.
Just keeps spreading, doesn't it?
LLagret
It's been hard to contain.
LLagret
I'm afraid they're waiting for you, sir. I told them I'd bring you down.
[breathes heavily and inhales sharply] May I have a moment to collect my thoughts?
[Lagret leaves. Outside the room, he hears a blaster sound, indicating Major Partagaz committed suicide]
[Sen Bail Organa visits Cassian at his quarters]
SBSen Bail Organa
Ever sleep well?
BBail
Then we have something in common. General Draven has your orders. Proceed to your contact, learn what you can. Do it quickly.
BBail
If I die fighting the Empire... I want to go down swinging. [Cassian chuckles] You find that amusing?
No, but... You and Luthen would have gotten along much better than you think.
BBail
May the Force be with you, Captain.
